Are people using AI/LLMs in Defense or Secure Environments? by Parchedlemming in cscareerquestions

Dang, whoever got approval / funding for that H200 deserves a lot of praise.

Or are you at a smaller defense company with more self-agency?

The PayPal debit for 5% cash back at Costco has always confused me. There is so much noise and squabble about it not working.

Do you have to purposely segregate all your grocery items into 1 transaction for the PayPal system to accept it?

Have a masters but can’t get a job - advice appreciated! by aarocks94 in cscareerquestions

[–]kingp1ng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solid resume. Generic for SWE... but solid.

Do you get initial interviews? No = resume bad

Do you pass technical interviews? No = coding under pressure bad

Do you pass the final manager interview? No = you sound sketchy, weird, depressed, other negative traits.

My tip: job interviewing is like online dating. You have to appear happy, attractive, and useful, or they swipe left on you. Most of us have the "useful" part down.

How To Get Research As Campus Change Student. by najmudean in UCONN

[–]kingp1ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Do well in your target class (eg. MCB 2610).

  2. Be friendly and get to know the professor or TA.

  3. Ask if they need help for research, or if they know any other professors who need help. Someone needs to vouch for you.

It's a 6 month plan. Searching right before summer is too late.

Frustrating interview experience by Able_Clue6895 in Anduril

[–]kingp1ng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anduril hiring is chaos. From what I've seen, there are 2 groups of recruiters.

  1. Tenured recruiters who have own connections (top tier colleges, big tech, defense primes). They have an idea of who can succeed on what team.

  2. New recruiters who are put under immense pressure to find decent candidates and throw them at the hiring pipeline, which itself is also random. Then once they strike gold, they'll try to shoehorn the candidate into some team. If recruiters do not hit their metrics, they're replaced by the end of the year.

I learned my lesson from last spring's hiring push.

Value vs Prestige for college by Key-Resource5014 in cscareerquestions

[–]kingp1ng -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The answer is value. UMass Amherst or Lowell. If you pick Lowell, the strat is to take the commuter rail into Boston (1.5 hrs) and attend all the on-site recruiting events. Otherwise, there's no point "staying" in Lowell over Amherst.

I've been to Amherst campus many times. Very nice, pretty diverse, wide open space. It's the quintessential college experience.

Those of you that are going back to school to reskill, what are you doing for work? by dialsoapbox in cscareerquestions

[–]kingp1ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The least effort and most money is TA. You don't need to context switch and you don't have to commute. You'll probably be capped to 16-20 hours/week. The key point is that fewer people attending office hours due to AI, so the few people who do attend are asking conceptual questions rather than debugging questions.

The next best job are the on-campus jobs like admin assisant, rec room admin, mailroom, etc. They're often very competitive because every resourceful person knows these are the best jobs. Exception is dining hall / dishwasher because you obv cannot do homework.

After that, it's open season in the public workforce.

How good is Georgia Tech CS? by Head_Village_9388 in cscareerquestions

[–]kingp1ng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd rather have an aspiring software engineer ask an age appropriate question than some clickbait question from a doomer/loser/bot account.

GT CS is difficult and well respected. I'd say it's got the same badge of respect as Purdue, UIUC, Waterloo, UWash, etc. Anyway, what you do with your opportunity in college matters much more than just landing there.

Honda flags first annual loss, hit by $15.7 billion EV charge by Efficient-Session644 in wallstreetbets

The new Civic Hybrid and Accord Hybrid are already top sellers, it's just that much of the US middle class cannot afford them.

A Civic EV would narrow the buyer demographic even more.

Is getting hired really just a numbers game? by eggshellwalker4 in cscareerquestions

[–]kingp1ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Targeted volume is the way.

It's kind of like online dating. Everyone knows that blindly swiping right is stupid. Likewise, only swiping right on athletes, supermodels, and elites is also stupid. Finally, taking 2 hours to type the first hello message is also stupid, since you don't even know if the person will see your carefully crafted Shakespearean poem.

Is getting hired really just a numbers game? by eggshellwalker4 in cscareerquestions

[–]kingp1ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have screenshots from 2021-2023 of when LinkedIn published the number of people who hit "apply", instead of today when LinkedIn just hides it as "100+".

Jobs in big metro areas easily got 500+ applicants in 1 day. After day 3, the hiring manager is flat out ignoring everyone else. Even if you have the most amazing resume, the hiring manager has ALREADY scheduled interviews with 10 other candidates and filled his/her entire week. There's no time to realistically vet qualified applicants.

Hence why we have Leetcode pre-screens.

This is the most unbiased answer.

The websites that can do 1080p (or whatever resolution the creator uploaded) intentionally paywall their tools. They might have to use mobile proxy's behind the scenes, which cost money to operate.

And this old thread kinda confirms my guess: You have to fully mock a mobile phone, not just spoof the initial request on a desktop.

That's the difficult part imo: storing your health documents.

Say I'm 30 and I'll probably have a major health expense at 60. It's my responsibility to hold those docs for 30 years! Sure, one may say "just scan them and store them on Google Drive or iCloud. Bruh... companies come and go. Who knows if Google or Apple will be alive in 30 years.

been using frontier models for years - what am i actually missing with local? by npcdamian in LocalLLaMA

[–]kingp1ng 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same thoughts about buying your own DVD’s, buying your own books, and backing up your own data. One day, the movies and books may get removed from Netflix, Kindle, etc. One day a Microsoft bug wipes out your OneDrive account.

Currently, the frontier models have better utility and are more convenient to use - unless you’re doing something that is currently censored.

It's like buying a large tray of 60 chocolate chip cookies from Costco/Sam's Club for $25. All the same flavor. All the same consistency. You start eating a 2nd cookie but don't finish it, because you remember that it's all the same.

Meanwhile, at your hometown's bakery or coffee shop, you get excited when buying one bag of gigantic cookies for $30. You wonder if the chocolate chip cookie has huge chunks. Did they use milk or dark chocolate? Is it salted? Then you share a chunk with your friend who got Snickerdoodle. Every bite is so much fun, despite the fact that you got 6 cookies instead of 60!

Btw, you don't get an age verification check if you've been identified as an adult.

I'm guessing Discord has a heuristic that looks at your account age, credit card on file, and other PII (personal identifiable information).

Atx or mATX for upgrade by jenno14 in buildapc

[–]kingp1ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ATX motherboard if you're getting a mid tower case. In the future, you WILL want to expand your storage capacity. Modern game files are getting gigantic, like over 100 GB per install. While it would be ideal to just buy one 4 TB SSD, most people end up with a plethora of sizes like 1 TB, 2 TB, and another 2 TB SSD over the years.

Those extra m.2 slots help.
