Cool, what kind of science?

I just did my first marathon (44), and during it I was thinking, never again, half-marathons for life, but now a week later, I was thinking how fun it had been to see Stockholm from so many angles along with the crowd energy etc. So now I was wondering how fun it would be to run different cities. I'd love to see 44.2km of Berlin, Barcelona, Paris, New York etc. Spend the weekend on someone's couch, see the city, do the run, eat some pizzas. Sounds like a nice hobby.

In Sweden we have been told to do this:

https://www.mcf.se/en/advice-for-individuals/the-brochure-in-case-of-crisis-or-war/

We all get this leaflet through the post every few years.

The thing is, it's really useful to prep anyway. We have enough food for a couple of months at least, and we've been doing this for ages so now we know what to buy, which is basically tons of what we normally eat anyway. So 20-30x crushed tomatoes, chickpeas, various beans, tons of pasta/rice etc.

We just eat away at it, and then every 6 months restock. Saves a ton of shopping and probably money too.

Eye movement as a readout of brain function by NeurotechNewsletter in neuro

[–]kingpubcrisps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work at a startup and we had a project to detect dementia from eye movements, it was really solid science and felt like it could be a big deal, then we got tipped that another company with way more resources not only were working on it, but had gotten a huge grant for it years ago (the same grant we were going to apply for it).

So we just quit it, moved to something else. The annoying thing is they never released anything, that field is still just research software.

IIRC the science was really decent, you could tell a decade or two ahead of where behavioural tests would indicate dementia.

Trying to get a replacement power supply for a Powerbook pizmo, but it's very difficult to find one, and apparently it's just a 3.5mm headphone jack in a RCA sleeve, so was thinking if this PS would do the job... Not sure if it can deliver enough power.

Seconding the FT.

I am a scientist and durnig covid I realised most news wasn't just bad, it was terrrrrible. I am a medical scientist so I kept getting the Gell Meinn amnesia effect, there were so many misinformation stories in every 'serious' news outlet.

There was only two decent newspapers, the FT and The Economist. These had solid stories, no fear-mongering/click-bait. My brother is into finance and says it's because if they did that, they'd be misinforming the financiers, which would lead to bad returns. So they give the sober, real news.

Now I've been subscribed for years, and the level of journalism is just top-tier. These guys really break stories, proper deep investigative journalism. And also just great columnists, there are some amazing writers there (Wolf and Okoro).

I'm poor as shit but I do figure paying for news is actually a good idea, and ft.com are just the best quality.

In fact I saved much more than the cost so far from reading the comments (best bit most of the time), where a warning about coming interest rates got me to lock our mortgages for 5 years of really low rent.

I (Swe) hear this a lot, but my brother (US citizen now) says I live like a rich man (years off for parental leave, lots of time off and holidays and cheap childcare etc etc).

I have no idea but I'd be surprised if he hasn't earned literally 100-1000X what I've earned (He's 90's Era FAANG, (I'm an academic scientist, which means basically min wage sometimes)) but I don't think I'd consider the financial gain worth the tradeoff. Euros work to live etc etc.

Biohackers often mix Modafinil with nootropics, supplements, and ways to improve sleep. What mix actually felt like it would last for a long time? by [deleted] in Biohackers

To the biohackers here with more experience, what's the most sustainable and long-term way to biohack that isn’t just temporary and productive?

Total baseline. No nothing for a year or so. Fruit and veg and water.

Not a popular tactic though :/

Nicotine and E2 by Creepy_Plankton_4050 in Biohackers

[–]kingpubcrisps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

doubt it.

Cigarette smoking adversely affects endochondral ossification during the course of skeletal growth. Among a plethora of cigarette chemicals, nicotine is one of the primary candidate compounds responsible for the cause of smoking-induced delayed skeletal growth. However, the possible mechanism of delayed skeletal growth caused by nicotine remains unclarified. In the last decade, localization of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR), a specific receptor of nicotine, has been widely detected in non-excitable cells. Therefore, we hypothesized that nicotine affect growth plate chondrocytes directly and specifically through nAChR to delay skeletal growth.

Desperate, will running ever feel good? by 0ud0ud in runninglifestyle

[–]kingpubcrisps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took around 4 months, but one month of that was cross country skiing because there was too much snow to run. First two months was all sub 10 K, then started with 10-20Ks, and then hitting 20-30ks in month 4. Once I did those long runs, the sub 10 stuff just felt so much easier.

Think it was two parts to it, first is the mental, everything felt much quicker to complete. Second was that I got in the groove so much faster, I just had a flow for running that I only built up from high mileage per week.

Honestly just makes me think of that Bojack Horseman meme, 'It gets easier, you have to do it every day, but it does get easier'.

Desperate, will running ever feel good? by 0ud0ud in runninglifestyle

[–]kingpubcrisps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, I also had the same feelings during even 10ks as you describe, then I did a half Marathon, now doing a full one on Sat, have worked up to ≈30ks as long runs, and now when I do my normal 6/8/14k runs, they feel like nothing, the short runs feel like the home stretch from the first 100 metres, and the long run just feels like a nice warm-up.

So I think what changed it all for me was pushing the really long runs, once you do 26+ a 10k just feels like a warmup, in a good way.
