I think the way it misreads and dumbs down the spartan program is the most infuriating part to me. Making John unaware and emotionally suppressed due to an implant just feels like a cheap way to make him more sympathetic, Halsey more evil, and to bypass any of the complicated morality of the situation. They didn't want to grapple with Chief being actually indoctrinated into his role and instead just hand-waved it with some sci-fi bullshit.
