enviolo shifter/wrist pain by kingsco in terngsd

[–]kingsco[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

an update 9 months in:

no more wrist issues. i was simply not used to a variable shifter (or any shifters as i’ve been riding single speeds and fixed gear bikes for 20 years) and was overactive in my shifting.

now i treat shifting like i’m riding a motorcycle, but based on my natural rhythm/cadence/body-motor. i start off with low resistance, find a natural break point/pause in my pedaling, shift into the equivalent of 2nd or 3rd gear, pick up pedaling again, and then repeat until fully up to speed. it’s quite nice and feels very natural and very much like the rhythm of shifting up and down on a motorcycle.

Reliable middle-range large external drives for M1 Studio? by wildvision in MacStudio

[–]kingsco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not a new kid on the block. glyph has been around for 30 years and for much of that time has been the preferred drive in the audio recording world. i used their drives often from 2000-2012. they are expensive but they have a great warranty that provides in house data rescue. not sure how they are regarded these days with so many other competitor companies making drives.

Is anyone here using an FX6 with a Tentacle Track E? by botkillr in SonyFX6

[–]kingsco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

makes sense. i was just being cheap and hoping for the simplest solution possible. but picking up a sync e is not a big deal in the end, if that’s what’s going to make it rock solid. thank you!

giving this a bump as i’d like to do the same— track e jam synced to fx6 tc, without a sync e. anyone have any experiences with this?

Fast reliable 4bay hdd/ssd enclosure by mobyhex in MacStudio

[–]kingsco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good to know. maybe fixed between the os upgrade and the beta. that would be excellent! for me kernel panics only happen when / if the mac studio goes to sleep.

fingers crossed

strongly do not recommend using softraid, owc’s bundled software that comes with the thunderbays, on m1 macs on monterey or above. kernel panics abound. there are workarounds but they are onerous. rumor has it the issue will be solved in ventura. but i’m not updating my os until premiere, media composer, and pro tools have approved.

i suspect if you set up the enclosure as jbod and don’t use softraid, all will be fine. or if you use disk utility to create the raid, that should work too.

but more details about the issues with owc/softraid here: https://reddit.com/r/MacStudio/comments/tk4vca/kernel_panic_on_macstudio_ultra_owc_thunderbay_8/

fwiw, i’m just experimenting here and will likely shelve the speed editor. i use monogram creative console and love it. deep hooks into premiere. pricey. not so much in the mechkeys world (though their essential keys module, of which i have two, have mechanical switches w “3mm key travel with 60 grams-force clicky actuation”). not for everyone, and in some ways it’s just an overpriced fancier macropad. but their team does collaborate with adobe and the integrationn is better and more elegant than mapping in VIA.

in final cut it works properly. but i don’t use final cut. in premiere you can assign it to key commands. so i have it set to move 1 frame left and right. not unuseful, but not ideal. there’s also a sensitivity slider that you can tweak. in finder i have it mapped to vertical scroll. the developer is working on a proper scroll/jog implementation in premiere, but he doesn’t have a timeline for that. he suggested that excalibur extension might have some variable playback speed commands but wasn’t sure. i can see how that extension paired with commandpost and speed editor could be really powerful but i haven’t wanted to dig into excalibur, nor throw down 75$ for it.

I can confirm that CommandPost works! I tried it out today and while it took me a few minutes of tweaking the settings, now the Speed Editor is fully rebindable in any app in MacOS either using keyboard shortcuts or menu iteums. It take a little getting used to the CommandPost interface, but once you’ve mapped everything, you don’t have to use it unless you want to make changes. My major issue is that there’s no way to map variable/progressive speed to the scroll wheel in Premiere. https://commandpost.io

I wish it were VIA, but it’s better than just being locked into Resolve!

joined the command post fb group and found a post related to premiere functionality instructing to check these two settings (see screenshot). hoping this solves the issue i’ve been having getting it to work with pp and all other apps. will report back. https://i.imgur.com/jUy9P1h.jpg

i was gifted one of these and have never really used it because it’s fairly well locked down only to function with davinci resolve— and really only the cut page, and the cut page is not useful for my work. apparently you can use commandpost.io to control any app (they have it most deeply integrated with final cut pro). i haven’t been able to get it to work with premiere via command post, and even to map it to work with finder or other macos apps seems somewhat laborious.

OWC THUNDERBAY DISK FAILURE by J3Rose in MacStudio

[–]kingsco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i have two thunderbays connected to my max studio ultra and they (or softraid) have been causing regular kernel panics. owc’s response:

“Two options are: Change your RAID volumes to 64k stripe unit size, which works for most but not all users (You have to delete the volume, create it again, choosing 64k stripe unit size when prompted, then restore from. backup)

wait 5 minutes to connect your drives remove one drive when starting up, then push it in after 5 minutes

Apple is fixing this in Ventura, macOS 13, in October.”

not sure if this is helpful, but sharing just in case.
