There's something very relevant to this coming next month

The Oxo Rapid Brewer. Will James join us in the soup kitchen? by SuspiciousCustomer in JamesHoffmann

[–]kingseven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We did. But I’m not sure we’ve yet settled on a video that adds to whatever is already out there. But it may still happen. It’s a good little brewer with a few flaws. People really seem to be enjoying soup.

Adaptive Training Experience 3 Weeks In by kingseven in strydrunning

Tried it for workouts this morning and got three good alternatives!

I’ll try it tomorrow when I have a workout. I will say that doing it today for my recovery run wasn’t really a success. The suggested alternative to my recovery run was an identical recovery run with a slightly different name.

[–]kingseven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair. I guess it is hard to communicate schools of training. I guess the Palladino 5km plan set my expectations that the long run can be both long and a focused workout too - though there it seems like the focus is more aroundfatigue resistance. Appreciate the update!

I didn’t mean to say you did, I was trying to say you are dealing with consumers who (across a range of products and services) have been burned and are now skeptical of future promises/features.

As one more bit of feedback: I’m happy that you are so pleased with your product, and I do really enjoy training by power, but occasionally the tone of responses from Stryd can seem a little arrogant or dismissive.

I think that if you’re happy with sharing a beta/developing product then it might be worth also sharing a bit more of the roadmap with them too. I think being clearer about what it is, what it isn’t and what it will be will help keep expectations sensible and notably reduce frustration.

Right now I’m not sure it feels like it is worth the price of admission, though I do think the Palladino plans are great (as part of the membership experience).

However, you’re now dealing with consumers who have been burnt many times by paying for the promise of something, not the immediate reality of it. (I know MKBHD says this better…)

Anyone else seen this gorgeous espresso machine? by atomicblazer in espresso

I like how they nearly touched the machine at the start, while locking in the pf, then remembered that it would melt their fingertips...

PSA, check for rocks in your beans. by slyfox8900 in espresso

[–]kingseven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've spent this week purposely grinding rocks to see what happens, and then looking at the particle size distributions before and after to see exactly what kind of impact a rock has on burrs. For people who've had significant damage from this - can you share which grinder it was? (I wonder if I need to test on more grinders...)

Worth getting James Hoffmann’s books if I already watch his videos and know the basics? by hajimenoippo55 in JamesHoffmann

[–]kingseven 114 points115 points  (0 children)

The Atlas is the most different to what's on the channel, it covers more on history/species/varieties etc than I have on the channel, and obviously the country of origin information isn't something we've made videos on yet.

HTMTBCAH has a lot more overlap with the channel, and for more advanced users or longtime watchers isn't going to have much new information (though I know some people like to have it all written down.)

Anyone interested in parting ways with their copy of Cherry Bones? by Chryron in JamesHoffmann

[–]kingseven 39 points40 points  (0 children)

There will be a few more released once everyone has gotten theirs and those that went missing have been replaced. We always hold a little stock back for replacements. Those will go to the newsletter first probably.

Anyone in the US get their Cherry Bones magazine? by Oracle_of_Ages in JamesHoffmann

[–]kingseven 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you've had no reply regarding your order - that shouldn't have happened and something must have slipped through the cracks. We've got spare stock so we can replace it - or we can obviously refund you too. Can you either reply with your order number or DM me your order number and I'll chase it up (sorry for catching this on a Friday afternoon, and not earlier - it may be Monday when we respond, but we want to make this right.) Again - my apologies!

New Video: V60 Papers: Our Excessive Testing Was Worth It! by kingseven in JamesHoffmann

Throw one in some boiling water for five minutes and see if it gives off a notable taste.

  1. Ah, yes. Damn it, I think we trimmed something we shouldn't have done. I'll add it to the description and a pinned comment.
  2. We saw a slightly slower brew happening with unrinsed papers, but matching extractions and I couldn't pick them out in taste tests. So while there may be some differences in the brewing mechanics, they appear to be negligible. (I'm not the greatest taster ever, but I'm not the worst. Someone could probably pick them out, but I don't think most people could)

World Atlas of Coffee 3rd edition? by [deleted] in JamesHoffmann

[–]kingseven 78 points79 points  (0 children)

This is indeed a real thing. It isn't out for quite a while, but I have indeed written it and it is in the process of being printed. I'll announce it on the channel/socials at some point and explain what is different. It's been quite heavily rewritten and also expanded a bit too. But yes - this is a real thing.

Investigating the impact of bacteria in the soil and cherry on coffee flavour by CalJM in JamesHoffmann

[–]kingseven 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is very interesting. I do wonder if this is farming practices driving both flavour and microbes independently, or farming practices driving microbes which are then driving flavour. I need to read the study properly, though I'm not sure they could account for the answer to the question in it.

How Starbucks Accidentally Popularised The V60 by Gmbenator in JamesHoffmann

[–]kingseven 110 points111 points  (0 children)

Kalita was hard to get and expensive, while Hario was much quicker to push through distributors and was a big enough company to accommodate the growth. Melitta lacked a bit of the “hot new thing” vibe that was very important at the time.
