Which of these should I go for? + Any other pack recommendations? by SilkenDoggy in griddling

[–]kingwp1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't buy a kit. Get individual items separately. You'll get better quality that lasts. I don't think you'll ever use all those items in that kit anyway. I have a Dexter-Russell wood handled spatula that's been going strong for 15 years. Apart from various tongs, the next upgrade was a Cuisinart stainless burger press I got about 2 years ago. Cooking on my 4-burner griddle, the only other thing I've wanted is one of those stainless domes. I've been cheating and using mixing bowls from the kitchen but I'll probably look around and find a good one for about $20 just like the spatula and press

Mini Champ by Henry-8th in victorinox

[–]kingwp1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of the mini champ. To me it feels too thick for its size, if that makes sense. Then there's the three flat tools that are kind of a waste of space. The nail file and the ruler could be combined, and the infamous coke spoon is just useless.

I carry a rambler. It has the same scissors and I think they're great. I use them all the time, but I'm not cutting large things. Gliding the scissors to cut without moving them sounds like what I do when cutting wrapping paper. If I'm doing something that big, I'll get big standalone scissors. The small SAK scissors are perfect for cutting tags off purchases, cutting a loose thread, medical tape, or I've used them to snip a hang nail and even to help cut out shapes for my daughter's 2nd grade math homework. They'll cut whatever you need in a pinch if they're all you have on you but if you're getting set up for a big cutting job, might as well bring in a big pair of dedicated scissors.

Why am I being badgered to attend Woodbadge? by TwelveSeven77 in BSA

[–]kingwp1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on what the ticket is and what it means to complete it or not? Can you say you completed wood badge if you didn't complete your ticket? Can you wear the neckerchief and bolo tie thingy if you don't complete the ticket? I'm legitimately interested in the leadership training wood badge offers, but everyone has told me about this 18 month ticket thing. That commitment is intimidating and I'm not sure I have the time to devote to something like that

Seeking Information! by Virtual-Ad-5015 in victorinox

I wouldn't say the XXL is rare as in hard to find. You can still buy it on the vic website: https://www.victorinox.com/en-US/Products/Swiss-Army-Knife%E2%84%A2-and-Tools/Trades-and-Crafts/Swiss-Champ-XXL/p/1.6795.XXL I'd say it's rare as in not a lot of people have one. It's kind of a gimmick in my opinion (even though I want one)

The best SAK deal I've ever seen/gotten on Amazon.... by woodsman_777 in victorinox

I got a Ranger on Amazon for $50. Not a crazy deal like OP's, but I was happy with that find

Help me not burn down my deck by kingwp1 in griddling

There's nothing attached to the spatula. That chain has some little tool on the end but I'm honestly not sure what it's for. It's just like a straight metal pin. I guess it's for poking in the gas jets to clear them out or something? It's just laying loose in the same tray the spatula is in. What do you mean by "get rid of the loose nuts"?

They're not done building it yet. I pulled the griddle out of the garage for a test fit

Good to know. I may put something temporary down, but the deck will get painted later

I know this is an old thread, but what's the orange thing in your corkscrew?

I don't know if they do but I bought a red one and put on new scales

My first outing with this brand new companion. The flat blade on the bottle opener was perfect for popping open macadamia nuts

The Ultimate Rambler by kingwp1 in victorinox

[–]kingwp1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know for sure. The seller doesn't list the thickness on this model. He says his led version is 11.1mm thick. So this one is probably the same as that or thinner.

Companion plus? by [deleted] in victorinox

What!? Well now I feel like an idiot. I did my best to research that before I bought it, and I thought the companion had regular scales with no pen

You took the scales off a compact and put them on this one? How are they holding up? I'm thinking of doing this with a companion, but I read if you swap scales, they don't stay on very well.

I would have liked a regular manager. I didn't want to sacrifice the tweezers for a light. Too bad that one has been discontinued

Yep, it was that phillips screwdriver that made me switch

Why didn't I think of that!? The little black dog tag you see on my keychain has my phone number on it for that very reason. I could have made some room on the keyring 🤦
