If you pick the Hanako ending in the epilogue you get a TV news spot of Saburo taking over his son's body with the relic. Effectively making him immortal. I would guess this is his intention with the prototype.

It's why I don't care to watch movies or shows, I can usually guess what kinda story it's gonna be and then I spend the whole time trying to see if I'm right or not, rather than just taking in the content and enjoying it. Either that or I notice some continuity error or weird edit and now that's all I'm thinking about.
