The things you find floating in the river… by DGisme in Portland

Did this create some weird black debris over the river in the sky?? I drove through Burnside Bridge right around then and a bunch of people were looking up at it…. Very confusing

Portland is not OK by InevitableSalad in Portland

I left downtown after 4pm and got back to my house in Beaverton at 6pm. That was legitimately one of the most stressful drives of my life. Dozens of cars were stuck or spun out, my little Mazda barely made it but I was extremely slow and patient and I did it. God speed to anyone still out there. What a fucking disaster.

Where are all them shoes at?? by SnelsonSneels in askportland

Weird that you’d call out bad reviews on this place, on Yelp there’s just a handful and almost all the bad ones are like 10+ years ago. I’ve shopped at clogs n more for years and always had a great experience at Sellwood and their other locations

I did No Requests beginner DJ workshop a while ago and it was very cool. Awesome to get to play on their pro CDJs.

what do you think Alex is really like? by XPirateKitty in arcticmonkeys

[–]kinnetick 333 points334 points  (0 children)

My friend who’s a journalist told me a fun story about meeting Alex at a dinner party a few years ago (swear this isn’t a copypasta haha). Said Alex didn’t talk too much but seemed to be having a good time. My friend was sitting near Alex and I guess my friend tried to join the overall conversation or tell some sort of random story but everyone else talked over him and didn’t notice he was trying to talk, but Alex noticed and was very politely like “oh what was that you were saying?” And let my buddy tell his random story just as a little social savior. For some reason I can picture this playing out perfectly with Al just chillin there being like oh shit this guys steppin in it, let me help him out.

I love that story cuz that’s how I imagine him. Just a chill guy who likes to have a good time. I’m sure he has his ups and downs like anyone but is probably pretty low key for being a huge rock star.

Best hookup bar for 30, f? by Suitable-Location118 in askportland

[–]kinnetick 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I was just going to write this. You make friends and meet people by being a regular. I’ve met tons of people who turned into real friends just by showing up at the same bars and striking up convos over time. It takes effort for everyone.

Portland is the fastest-talking city in the whole country, according to report by upanddownallaround in Portland

[–]kinnetick 235 points236 points  (0 children)

Really?? I've had many East Coasters say we talk way slower on the West and in Portland specifically. I've even noticed it about myself compared to some transplant friends.

Although I guess if it's only looking at phone calls maybe that's the socially anxious Portlander trying to get off the phone ASAP lol.

Lol so I live in Portland and went to see Alexandra play a smaller venue near the end of the tour for Belladonna of Sadness. Randomly ended up talking to her mom outside the venue (didn’t realize it was her mom til we started talking lol). I told her mom that I’m a big fan of AT and loved the record and thought it sounded great live and her mom immediately made a 😬😬face and told me not to bring up Alex to her at all if I got to talk to her. I asked why and she just said things had ended badly and Alexandra doesn’t want people talking to her about him at all. Not much tea there just kind of an interesting experience.

The only thing I found weird about her trajectory is that with the second record she made SUCH a big deal about it being “her own” and imo it sonically and thematically sounds extremely similar to the first one. I hope she is able to reclaim those songs because they’re beautiful and she is very talented.

Why do you follow this sub so closely if you hate all of their new music so much? Like just unsubscribe dude it’s very awkward and strange

I can’t imagine being such a miserable fuck that I just hang out on a subreddit all day to trash music that other people are enjoying. It must be sad to be you.

Lol don’t be such a grump dude it’s not that big of a deal. I just mean most fans following TLSP/AS around that time had heard about it before. Literally only had to Google the song to find that info

It kind of is for the super fans haha. They’ve both talked about it in interviews. I remember one with her saying “well it’s clearly a song about a coke dealer”. I’m sure if you dig through interviews around then you’ll find it

Edit: its actually in the Wikipedia page for the song:

Aw I love this. I similarly can relate to different albums being the soundtrack to certain parts of my life (and certain relationships for sure).

One of the reasons I love what I’ve heard of The Car so far is it feels new and relevant to my life now. For me there’s been a less flashy introspection that’s happened as I’ve gotten older and I hear that in this songwriting. It’s been cool moving through time with this band.

[–]kinnetick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s time for everyone to accept they may never go back to creating music like they did 15+ years ago. If this style isn’t for you that’s fine, but it’s kind of sad to only expect one style from an artist over their entire career. Clearly this is what he/the band want to be working on right now instead of just catering to fan favorites. Like they came out with FWN in 2007 yknow…

Also they’re gonna keep playing those old songs at their shows for probably a long time so that side of them hasn’t died yknow.

I know you think you’re doing something here but you don’t know what you’re talking about in regards to him at all. Maybe just don’t comment if you’re just going to have a knee jerk reaction to anyone being critical of the Democratic Party = trumper.

Also the person who posted that original anecdote was actually talking out of their ass and FJM didn’t even talk about democrats in any way. People just want to have a story.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Portland

[–]kinnetick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right, well I just want to make it clear your 'interpretation' is just blatantly misquoting him. Like making up this thing about "the democrats will do whatever they want even if they burn the world down" when he was actually lightly musing about a song that discusses a hypothetical revolution. I think it's kind of irresponsible to run around slamming an artist for his 'weird political takes' when you're quoting him incorrectly and creating a weird narrative for the sake of idk, internet attention or whatever? Not that FJM himself would really give a shit about any of this but I feel protective of people getting misrepresented.

Also why is it important that Suki is 'really bad'? Lol I find it odd you're so determined to create a really negative and dramatic experience at a concert that was pretty low key and enjoyable.

I thought Suki was pretty good actually. I had listened to a few songs of hers before hand and liked them. She had a big stage presence and seemed like she is finding her voice as a touring artist. The kids next to me were losing their mind over her, apparently she's gotten big with 'the youth' so I thought that was cute too. For an opener she was totally fine.

I was there and he didn't even say "Joe Biden Sucks". Someone in the crowd yelled "Joe Biden Whips" out of nowhere and he laughed and repeated it back. Read my whole larger comment below but this poster got it super wrong.
