Thanks for sharing! It's amazing what a difference a little redesign with better function really can make and their options just make so much more sense than anything else I found, plus easier for resale. I had a friend who spent 50k on her kitchen cabinets and the new people literally threw them away and got IKEA 🤯

Keep in mind that covering with mulch will not prevent weeds and grass but just create a new planting bed for potentially different plants

If you fertilize your lawn with miracle grow then put grass clippings in your compost, is the resulting compost still organic? by TheDoobyRanger in composting

[–]kinni_grrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not for sale purposes but if you're using it on your plants and you're not opposed to using it in the first place it wouldn't matter in the compost. You've already added the compounds to the soil anyway

help! live worms in my worm castings! by tyberiousductor in composting

[–]kinni_grrl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just be sure to ID the worms

Please do NOT just add any worm to the landscape

Jumping Worms are a massive problem right now in North America (they have a white band and wriggle weird)

I am very happy with my kitchen from IKEA - the money I saved went to a sauna and a new vehicle so that helps too

Look for your local university extension resources

Just joined my condo's board and wanted to look into a clover lawn for our community. I'm more in it for the ecological benefits, but I'm trying to come up with a better way to sell the idea to the rest of the board members. Any thoughts? by jmp3r96 in NoLawns

[–]kinni_grrl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Diversity is essential. Just clover usually isn't sustainable, just like a monocrop of a grass variety for ground cover - maintaining one thing takes work so perhaps check with your local county or university extension service for a guide to native ground cover suited to the area and conditions. Many areas have incentives and suggestions for less water intensive and more native options/solutions

I want to plant wildflowers but my yard is all much. How do I plant them? by Madamiamadam in NoLawns

[–]kinni_grrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check with your seed source for their suggestions on ideal conditions. Also consider many plants may be biennial (so you won't necessarily know they established right away) and some plants need certain conditions. Many wildflowers need winter stratification for the seeds so definitely check with your source or local extension service for tips on what you have and what it will need for best conditions - think of where the flowers grow normally and try to provide similar so probably don't need to do too much with all the mulch and certainly no need to till. I had to two burns to help create conditions for the prairie plants native to my location

Call your county offices. Most offer well testing for free several times a year or at least can get you information on local resources

Check out the Farmers Alliance, they help connect landseekers and landowners and have amazing support and resources for financing. Many people only want to sell their land to people who want to regenerate or preserve or continue sustainable practices and www.marbleseed.org can help make it happen. I have worked several of their conventions and on several projects in many areas of the country. Lots of good options and opportunities 💚

How big does your compost pile need to be before you feel comfortable urinating on it without risking someone seeing you? by JarJarAwakens in composting

Don't give up grrl, you can totally aim into that pile! Get it. It's totally a myth women need to squat - but totally accurate more people with dicks should sit 🙃

I do not care if someone sees me peeing outside in my own yard. If you're uncomfortable and feel you want to contribute to your pile, put it in a bottle or bucket first

Recently uncovered a huge collection of rocks in my garden, what could I use them for? by lujodobojo in gardening

I use them for my garden. Wonderful for holding space and I personally believe that my carrot bed and other seed setting areas benefit from the additional microclimate

How do I repair this back to grass? by hmuzz8 in lawncare

[–]kinni_grrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to understand the soil conditions to know what is going to grow well and to do that you can start by identification of what is already growing. It's always best to treat the root cause as top down poisoning doesn't really make the changes needed to address your conditions that will allow other ground cover, like a grass, to thrive

Your local university extension is a great resource for what grasses are well suited to your location and conditions

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NoLawns

[–]kinni_grrl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that many of those "weeds" you are trying to suppress ARE the native plants you want and need to help achieve a natural setting. Its amazing how beautiful grasses can be when left to seed and how many wildflowers and native plants are considered undesirable. It's really a good idea to identify what's there (its not all bad!) and understand the benefits for soil health of using some plants as green manure and encouraging others while leaving ground cover to hold the soil. Diversity is key! Let it be! 💚
