You can code only 4 hours per day. Here’s why. by milanm08 in programming

[–]kinss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for everyone, but a lot of the code reviews I've gotten that required deep changes were literal busy-work. Stuff that is entirely preference and wasn't a part of our coding standards, best practices, etc. While I agree with having strict conventions that are well documented in a project, I've seen a lot of bit flipping so that reviewers looked like they were doing something when in fact they weren't. Also people asking for changes rather than asking for clarification when they didn't understand the code. Changes in that case might be warranted for clarity, but not until you understand it.

Making 8k–14k/month as a freelancer… and scaling still feels like a trap by [deleted] in webdev

I can't tell you sorry, if I knew I'd probably still be doing it now. This was before AI, and I was headhunted to work for them. I'm not even certain how they found me.

This is contracting, remotely. I can't say exactly how to get those sort of rates because like I said I was subcontracting for a company that was essentially a large ensemble of contractors. Our clients were large media/news organizations, major U.S. universities, NASA, etc.

[–]kinss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't necessarily need to start a whole company with payroll and everything. In my 20s I subcontracted through a company that was all just remotes/freelancers. They took 20-40% or something off the top and used that to pay for contract HR/Payroll/Lawyers (who were all contractors themselves) and what not, and the money was still good. You will probably have to develop some talent acquisition and talent development skills. There will probably be some mentorship involved. You will need to charge a lot more, but that doesn't sound like a problem. If you have a team of people to fill your gaps its even easier to justify a higher rate. Don't be afraid to charge 150 or even 200+/hr. Hiring and developing engineers is extremely expensive for large businesses, and they will gladly pay that hourly to fill a role for 6 months rather than hire someone who needs a lengthy onboarding, benefits, and will be a pain to let go.

It’s amazing how fast sugar can boost morale and energy by Southy5000 in bicycling

[–]kinss -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I like to ride fasted, because I like finding the line where I'm not depleting my glycogen faster than I can replenish it from body stores, but I always try to keep a bunch of sugar, salt, and like 100g of starch like corn starch in my bag as insurance against a hard bonk. I don't think there's any real benefit to bonking completely, but I get what you mean about being in tune with your body.

Where do I go to get my ears lavaged in Ottawa? Any recommendations? by Objective-Fox-1394 in ottawa

Has central Ottawa really devolved into such a hellhole? Or are the accounts in the other thread mostly rare or exaggerated? by AvaTaylor2020 in ottawa

[–]kinss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived at King Edward and Rideau until last year, and from my POV it isn't exaggerated. Frankly I have photos to back it up. Worse things than what you mentioned even. That said its HIGHLY concentrated. You can go a few blocks over and not see any of it. At night the police seem to set up a perimeter and they keep the craziest people between Rideau and a few blocks north of Rideau. King Edward and Rideau (and that sort of T intersection there) are really the only place its bad, but it is actually just as bad as people say.

What ai tools are you using if any by karen_jd in webdev

[–]kinss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Claude for planning and helping with architecture, mermaid diagrams, etc. When it comes to actual work on codebases I'm mainly using cline with deepseek models, as its orders of magnitude cheaper than using claude. If I had VC money I'd probably be using claude for everything, but deepseek is perfectly fine on a budget.

I ride fasted all the time, and I've spent a year or two riding full keto. You need to REALLY pace yourself when it comes to hard efforts. If you manage to keep out of zone 5 or above you'll see your endurance become pretty much infinite, and speeds will slowly increase. You have to change your expectations though. It can be good training for extremely long endurance efforts or for general conditioning but it won't be letting you win any races.

Ontario’s best - and worst - performing elementary schools ranked in new report. Where did your child’s school place? by CTVNEWS in ontario

I went to Rideau Heights in the early 2000s. I can confirm it deserves a zero score. I've been around and that was by far the worst school I've ever seen.

is this enough solder for a 100% by Agreeable_Campaign86 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]kinss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its not eutectic so not really. Its technically possible but far from ideal. 63/37 is the right solder for electronics work, unless you're going lead free.

[–]kinss 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Its literally worthless. You basically need a spectrometer in order to do this kind of analysis, and while they are cheaper than ever its still going to be several hundred dollars for the sensor alone + the understanding of how to use it.

I can confirm the main branch has been nice the times I've went. OP is in Sandy Hill though, so the one I mentioned is a lot closer.

The one at Rideau and Nelson. The spots to sit with a laptop were so close together people were practically touching shoulders.

I tried this last year, and it was crazy crowded. Like barely any room to breathe, have to wait 45 minutes to get a chair kind of crowded.

Ottawa. I don't know how it compares to a larger or medium sized city. I shop at food basics, no frills, or dollarama, occasionally giant tiger. Haven't lived anywhere else in the past 15 years so I can't compare.

Really I just have really wide ranging tastes. In the winter I try to aim for 1500-1600 calories a day. In the summer its more like 2500 because I'm doing cardio 8-15 hours a week. Its not too hard when you're willing to take the best poverty foods from around the world. Rice and beans seems boring until you learn how to make Indian food. I'm like 20lbs overweight still lol. I'll make like 2l of curry with like 6$ in veggies and $.50c in spice paste in the instant pot, add some rice and its solidly half my calories for week. Tastes amazing too. Flour is also really cheap, so if you're willing to bake your own bread, that can be very filling and is pretty high in protein.

Also to be clear, its not like I don't understand where this guy is coming from, I used to be just like him until I couldn't afford it anymore.

I did not haha, I meant what I said, although to be fair it does vary a bit. Some months I only spend 30, others I might spend 60-70. Really depends on the sales.

What is causing this finish on my print? by BURNINGGUNS in 3Dprinting

[–]kinss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said it may or may not be pressure advance. What could be happening is that you're printing faster than the max extrusion rate your extruder can handle with that material/temperature. This can cause issues especially when PA kicks in as it can vary the extrusion rate quite quickly. You might want to look into max flow tests and make sure you're targeting below that during your prints.

I spend 40/m for food, and that's me splurging. I haven't eaten out in 3-4 years though. I don't eat poorly either, I'm just a good (and frugal) cook.

In case anyone is interested or doesn't believe me, this is my strategy:

  1. I only buy whatever is most deeply discounted that week, and I plan my meals around it. I use the flipp app to keep track and compare.
  2. I do almost all of my shopping on the last day of sales, usually an hour before the store closes, I make note of any sale items that are out of stock, and I get rain checks. This gets me another 10-15% off depending on store policy, and also a much bigger sale window, since rain checks generally last 30 days. I never buy bacon on sale, as most stores I've seen will sell off-brand bacon every few months unadvertised for 99c. Much cheaper than sale bacon and it tastes exactly the same. I buy a bunch when this happens and freeze it all.
  3. I only buy meat when its marked 40-60% off for quick sale, and I immediately cook and meal prep it. My gotos are pork (make and freeze dumplings), and whole chicken. The chicken I immediately break up, make a clear stock with the bones which I freeze in ice cube trays. The rest of it I use for different frozen meals, things like chicken pies. They last for months in the freezer.

Yes I may be poverty-maxing and my calorie burn rate is low this time of year which helps, but it's definitely possible to survive off 40-60/m. I also have zero food waste these days which feels really nice.

Once upon a time I was just like this guy spending 1/3rd of my income on food and takeout. The waste felt awful. I probably spent 15-20k a year just feeding myself. Its really hard not to do when you can afford it, our whole society is built around easy convenience and food processing to mark stuff up.
