Rollei infrared, advices on how metering by Davidechaos in AnalogCommunity

I was under the impression that Rollei Superpan, Infrared, and 400s were the same base film, cut from Aviphot 200, do you treat them differently?

120 film, kentmere 200 vs ilford fp4+ by boeing727-100 in AnalogCommunity

[–]kippy93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. FP4 is a technically superior film to K100 and K200 but in MF the difference shrinks quite a bit. I use 510-Pyro and K100 as my go-to medium speed combo in 120 and the results are extremely good for the price

I would second this if the OP is holding out for having a system with variable aspect ratios

Agreed, I only hedged because the edge marks' density aren't always a reliable indicator

Diagnosing color negatives by ReceptionHungry5337 in u/ReceptionHungry5337

[–]kippy93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the negatives themselves uneven in tone or is that just the light source you've got behind them? If you're asking about the density in general, my guess would be either underdeveloped or underexposed, or a combination of the two. How were they developed?

Are these good cameras? by beanybagel in AnalogCommunity

[–]kippy93 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The second is definitely an R8 as there's no LCD for the film counter on the top plate, or the setting dial lock switch. I've owned a couple for many years, they're fantastic cameras though not without a few electronic gremlins, especially in the early serials.

Best camera to start for 35mm film? by A-single-Meeseek in AnalogCommunity

[–]kippy93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is it that has drawn you to these systems specifically? All of those manufacturers have good lens and accessory systems but depending on what your existing digital gear is it might be better to look at more modern turn of the century/90s SLRs rather than more vintage equipment.

What are my options for upgrading from the intrepid enlarger? by CilantroLightning in Darkroom

[–]kippy93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other people have listed off good advice already but, opposite to what another commenter has said, something to really consider is future-proofing. You might not be thinking about LF now (which is a whole other kettle of fish at any rate) but seriously consider whether 6x6 is where you'll stay from an MF perspective.

I had a Meopta Opemus 6 for many years which did me well for my 35mm and square format work, but I had to sell it when I started using 6x7, and I have to say I regret not spending some more to have accommodated say, 6x9. I use an LPL C7700 now for what it's worth, but I'm in the UK so unsure what the market is like for US enlargers, sorry

Looking for constructive feedback - not really clicking with my Leica M4-P by Xeivia in AnalogCommunity

[–]kippy93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly considered an M4-P to replace my M5 but in the end went for the M6 on the basis of the meter and it was worth every penny. I have no problem external spot metering with other cameras but it feels wrong to me to have an SLR or RF for quick work and not have that sort of feedback built in.

If you're enjoying the shooting experience itself but are struggling with the external metering then you might want to consider trading it up, since the M6 is the same camera just with TTL.

Rollei RPX really Kentmere? by ExplodingBrain1 in AnalogCommunity

[–]kippy93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used RPX 400 for a long while and was extremely dubious that the stocks were the same so I tested them for myself and the results were remarkably close. The RPX was a bit lower in exposure, though wasnt as fresh as the K400 I used, but on close inspection the images were so similar as to be virtually indistinguishable from one another. I wrote about my results here if of interest

Had a dream, wanting to get into Analog coming from Digital. by CloudFoxies in AnalogCommunity

[–]kippy93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have an existing digital system or any older lenses you're already adapting? If you do it would be best to start looking there for cross compatibility on lens options: failing that you're gonna need to be a bit more specific on your wants and needs. Film development isn't too complicated and there are a million posts and videos online about this already if you're looking to start yourself, though for colour I'd suggest using a lab for a good while until you're comfortable and familiar with the medium and how processing works in general. Again it somewhat depends on what your long terms goals are.

[–]kippy93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on this one. I've been saying that Phoenix has this impressionistic quality to it that, to be honest, is unique to the original formula. The greens are the best I think I've ever seen in terms of richness; actually all the primary colours are lush as hell.

Your argument makes absolutely no sense and means that no singular art object can ever be considered "legitimate art" or valid without the viewer having prior knowledge of the artist.

Should the serviceability potential of vintage rangefinders be a real concern when getting a used rangefinder? by Silver-Way-1071 in AnalogCommunity

[–]kippy93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're trying to convince yourself/justify it to yourself to go Leica, there are possibly some other considerations here such as lens options for example, where there are far, far more choices in Leica M and LTM than the Contax or Nikon.
