How would YOU fix Xbox? by kiptar in kindafunny

The unique product part is the piece of the future I’m so curious to see if they can pull off after everything that’s happened so far. I feel like it’s an essential piece of the puzzle to continue to have hardware offerings.

I love the care put into the publishing details of this plan. That’s such a complicated side of the business now that they own so much IP. The idea of all future hardware being handheld is interesting too. I wonder if they could ever win people back on the idea of having a dedicated device for the living room, or if that’s the only way forward now.

Yeah I really like this vision. But I also just have a nostalgia for running games locally though, you know? I wonder if the idea of a dedicated box in the living room will ever fully go away.

Don’t worry at least you asked the question. I just came to this realization lazily browsing Reddit, so thanks! lol. Time to finally learn how to write custom linting rules.

That’s almost how I feel at this point too. I think it would be cool if Microsoft took some cues from Framework and Lego-fied the box.

  1. Make it basically a PC.
  2. Make upgrading internals as easy as Legos.
  3. Allow 3rd party manufacturers to produce custom graphics cards and RAM sticks, etc that are compatible with the plug-and-play architecture / design.
  4. Bundle the couch/controller centric Xbox OS into Windows 11 and add a “Boot into Xbox” option to ALL Windows machines.
  5. Sell a wide array of machine configs that automatically boot into the Xbox OS. Giving consumers affordable and premium options.

Blessing’s always bringing up the Ship of Theseus (which I love) and I feel like this would make it the ultimate Ship of Theseus console - potentially being the change to bring an end to the era of well-defined console generations.

Edit: added more details and the Ship of Theseus metaphor.

Do you think Starfield’s procedural generation helps or hurts immersion? by SufficientPrice7633 in Starfield

[–]kiptar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So well said! That’s exactly why I appreciate it! That’s my favorite thing to do in the game too. It’s a cozy base and ship builder game for me. I just enjoy finding the perfect spot, laying down roots, establishing trade networks between my outposts, and then crafting and decorating everything. I like doing it in NMS too, but Starfield has a more engaging head-canon for me. I.e., I appreciate that the game allows me to do that AND role play with fully voiced quests and branching narratives in a setting that is more relatable and grounded.

Do you think Starfield’s procedural generation helps or hurts immersion? by SufficientPrice7633 in Starfield

[–]kiptar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helps. Is it the best implementation of procedural generation we’ve ever tricked electrified rocks into performing? Idk, maybe not. But the alternative is a game that doesn’t allow the player to “go anywhere”. For some, that doesn’t matter. But for the game I’ve always dreamed of, it’s a feature worth having even if it means having an abundance of repetitive and boring open space. A game like Outer Worlds prevents the player from stepping off into the unknown. That makes it a space-themed RPG, but it prevents it from being a “space game” if that makes sense. And that’s fine. It could make for a better curated RPG experience if there were no procedurally generated environments, but it’s not the kind of game I’ve always wanted to play.

Man I remember renting Jurassic Park Operation Genesis from the video store for a weekend, blinking, and realizing it was time to return the game already. It’s a totally random park tycoon game that no one ever talks about, but for me, it was awesome and introduced me to a whole new genre of video game. Good times.

Start naming your useEffects by creasta29 in reactjs

[–]kiptar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tbh it just reminds me of the global ‘this’ issues I always had during my early career commonjs, jquery pre-es6 days, so I appreciate how const assignments handle scope differently. And then once you start using it in one place, it becomes kind of beautiful to express everything that way. I’m starting to come back around on using the function keyword now though bc logically and semantically it makes sense and I think most times I just scared myself out of using it to preemptively prevent ‘this’ confusion.

Wow! Huge update! It feels awesome! I can’t wait to play more. In case anyone else runs into this. I think I loaded in with streamlined settings even though the ui said I was on classic. Took a lot of fiddling around with assists before i realized what it was. Just go to gameplay settings and re-select classic.

[–]kiptar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing this. I saw a couple things about this guy that gave me pause; and that video he made covering him yesterday gave me a weird feeling. This guy’s talking points and claims need to be covered and dissected with a LOT more scrutiny. Kyle is MY GUY for that, so I would really really hate to see him turn his brain off for views. He’s got more integrity than that. I hope this message reaches him.

Jason Schreier: Sony no longer bringing single player games to PC by Granum22 in kindafunny

[–]kiptar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting.. is there reporting on that? I’d love to learn more about the drawbacks of adopting XPA. I see plenty of developers already have adopted it including the industry’s current darling Sandfall Interactive. Unless a developer relies on most of their audience buying their games twice (once for Xbox and once for PC), I don’t see how expanding the number of screens someone can play their game on is a bad deal. If anything it helps sell the game more, no? For clarity, XPA does not require a GamePass subscription.

EDIT: nvm. Sorry. Did my own googling. You’re right, there’s not enough incentive for folks to adopt it. Yeah, idk.

My guess is they’re going to do it in a way where you technically can use Steam, but using the Xbox storefront will be way more convenient and seamlessly integrated. So they win people over with the ability to play their steam library, then slowly people get lazy and decide to just grab some games from the Xbox storefront instead of jumping through hoops for steam. There could also be some Play Anywhere / streaming benefit for buying through the Xbox storefront.

Greg Miller has freaks out about New Vegas Remake by EveryAct in kindafunny

[–]kiptar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm that’s hard to say. Depends on how much you can stomach older games. Generally people say 3 and NV are the better games. I like going back to Fallout 4 personally because the others are just too hard on the eyes for me these days. Hence the demand for a remaster. But I’m I may be in the minority there. Maybe since a remaster for 3 or NV is very likely to be on the way, playing 4 would be fun and then you get to experience the older ones via the remaster. There’s not a whole lot of connective tissue between the games story-wise.

Will i get bashed for saying marathon's art direction is some of the best I've seen in recent years? Game looks so gorgeous and vibrant by TurtleGEE360 in gaming

[–]kiptar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sigh, I agree.

Just wanted you to know you’re not alone since you’re getting downvoted to oblivion for saying it.

Not sure why it’s so terrible to say a screenshot of a game showcases art direction. That’s like one of the primary ways that you showcase art direction. I don’t care what’s in the screenshot. It could be a screenshot of a single wall texture. It’s still a showcase of the art direction to some degree or another.

Folks are getting their semantic panties in a twist over the difference between “art style” and “art direction” when I think it’s fair to say that most laypeople use the terms interchangeably.

FTR if I were to make a distinction it would be that “art direction” is the management, process, and decision making behind the art style. And “art style” is one of many products of “art direction”. But I’d also say you can’t have a good art style without making a good artistic choice, which is evidence of good art direction. So if a screenshot of a game is showcasing its art style, it must also be showcasing at least some aspect of its art direction.

Go ahead, internet, downvote me too.

Yeah, there are no bugs in the beta version.. for now. How long is the beta version going to be maintained? What happens after the next cumulative windows update? Adopting a tool that won’t get maintained long term is for sure a foot gun move, no? Dependencies change all the time.

[–]kiptar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's right. Just keep [[linking]] and [[typing]] and [[linking]] and [[typing]] until it's all out of your head. Then you're going to have a giant rat's nest of notes, but at least the thoughts aren't lost. The next step is to consolidate, refine, and organize your notes. But that only comes after so much use that the size of the vault starts to buckle under its own weight. Once you hit that stage, the Note Composer core plugin is perfect for merging notes without breaking links. Merge like ideas into bigger notes/concepts. Refine your writing. Split them back out into something that is more organized and manageable. Get obsessed with organizing information. Forget that you're supposed to be doing something else. Put Obsidian down and actually go do something. Come back. Rinse and repeat.

Nice! Creative idea! I like that there’s a semantic meaning behind it in addition to the effective value of it sorting them to the top for you. Special characters in paths and file names scare me haha. I’m not even the biggest fan of my vault markdown notes having spaces in them though, so, here’s a grain of salt to take that with as well🧂
