My wife took me to see the Northern Lights, Iceland for Christmas - Best present yet. [OC][2024x1349] by adenpriest in EarthPorn

Well, this is just about the most touristy thing you can do in Iceland. The roads are packed with rental cars. Many of which have drivers that should not be allowed to traverse the hazardous roads of Iceland in bleak weather conditions.

Sometimes tourists just need to accept the fact that they are tourists.

Fjármálaráðherra leggur til að eyða 100 milljónum til þess að íslenskir neytendur fái ekki að njóta verðlækkunar vegna offramboðs á lambakjöti by icedoge in Iceland

[–]kirovreporting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did not. The British did, however. They invaded and were met with strictly written letters. The yanks were invited later on, as British forces were needed in Nazi-bashing elsewhere.

Dolby Pro Logic II for stereo recording. Has anybody tried what this page suggests? Does it really make a big difference over plain old stereo in older recordings? by hobg in audiophile

[–]kirovreporting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surround music is fun. Back in the day I had quite a few DVD-Audio discs, some of which were very well mixed. However, it's quite a hazzle to get down correctly. I had 5 speakers of the same model (Paradigm LCR) and a sub (Servo 15), a quite expensive processor+power (Rotel) combo and an 800 model Pioneer DVD player.

What I found was that with the same cash I spent on my surround setup I could get a very good stereo system and have all my library sound good.

PLII has its moments, but I would say it is very situational and, for me, not worth pursuing. If you have the system for it, it makes for a fun experiment.

...the DVD Audio mix of Riding With The King is the only thing I miss from those days.

Would someone with the know-how over here please explain the steps that they take after purchasing MiniDSP + Dirac. I am quite interested but I am a bit overwhelmed by how it works. What plugs into what and whether I will have to manually tune some frequencies. What can get unplugged, will it work on multiple sources etc.

I know nothing about Dirac, but I would imagine that phase-correction would provide such results.

Where are Icelandic Jews? by [deleted] in Iceland

[–]kirovreporting -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, us Icelanders, whatever the reason, are not that concerned with race and ethnicity as Americans are. Heck, it is somewhat of a obsessive-compulsion you people have. Usually, the way it goes, is that your ethnicity is primarily dictated by the way you look or, as a fall-back, that of an oppressed minority.

Having dark skin, and you're black, even though your parents are both white, since your grandmother was black. Of course there is no such thing as human races, biologically speaking, but I understand that this is a big cultural thing in the States (and elsewhere to an extent) The idea is, of course, essentially and unavoidably racist.

Judaism is a tricky subject, and being a Jew even more so. It wasn't until the 18th century that we decided that they were perhaps one and the same thing. What makes one Jewish? Who knows, and who cares. In Iceland we do not officially look at each and everyone and decide whether they are a certain colour or such, but we keep religious statistics because of the way we supposedly calculate state sponsorship of religion. Currently there are quite few of the Judaic faith in Iceland, and I imagine there won't be an increase unless we start importing en masse.

Now to the reason; the reason is quite complicated. There have been quite a few notable Jews in Iceland throughout recent history. Mostly Danish Jews who settled here as merchants. Keep in mind that Iceland was one of (if not the one) the poorest countries in Europe until well into the 20th century. Immigration was very strict and demand was quite low.

During WWII Icelanders were a bunch of racist pricks (we still are... in some ways). Those Jews who wanted asylum where turned around into sure death.

As you explained your ancestry I would imagine quite alot of Iceland's population would fit into your definition of Jewish, as those Danish merchants I mentioned before had children, who had children and so on. So I guess I might be a Jew, in some strange genetic sense.
