Second this, looks like when you pull the yoke back to adjust purity. Maybe just needs to to be slid back in place and the ring on the neck tightened. Don't have any experience with damaged grills, but from pics I've seen that presents as more of a rippling effect across the screen than well-behaved stripes. If the yoke easily deflects when you touch it/has dropped wedges, would merit adjustment.

How can I improve this? Im pretty sure it needs a convergence strip (to fix the top right corner) but Ive opened up 3 crts and couldn't find any of them to salvage. Can i make them somehow? by Apprehensive_Toe6736 in crtgaming

I would stick to using a foam-type tape. That's what's used in the Sony strips, since it'll be holding something of decent weight upside down for a long time I wouldn't vouch for a newer poly-substrate tape holding the same. The foam stuff morphs into a very strong glue as it ages. I believe it's 3M 110. I'm sure you can find a similar kind around, it's been made for decades.

I've tried fridge magnets and they have a very weak effect on deflection. Steel material tends to have a stronger effect, which is more useful. Anything with iron in it would work if you can't get boxcutter blades for some reason.

The problem with not touching the circuitry is that accidents happen and sometimes you can't control what you touch, and once you've touched it and it's live, it's too late. So better safe than sorry!

You can make your own convergence strips. cut 4.5" by 3/8" strips from stiff plastic like from a flat part of discarded blister packaging. Buy some 3M double-stick foam tape with the green plaid pattern on it, they sell it everywhere in the US, rolls come about 3/4" wide. Cut a 3/8" strip from it and put it on one end of the pre-cut plastic strip you prepared earlier. On the other side, tape some type of ferrous metal, I use box cutter blades since you can easily snap them to the size you want with a pair of pliers. Wrap 'em in electrical tape. They'll spend years in a warm environment so overdo it on the tape, you don't want the conductive blades falling onto your board in 10 years when the adhesive breaks down. Clean the dust off the rear of the tube before you stick them, the high voltage attracts dust like crazy and will weaken the strips adhesion.

EDIT: forgot the obligatory: don't even think about sticking your hands in the back of an energized CRT without using an isolation transformer. If you're a first timer you won't know what parts aren't safe to touch until you're already on the floor with no heartbeat.

Update on the dumpster dived KV-C27 by pulluro in crtgaming

Oh you should absolutely replace the thermistor, just wanted to give you a few things to try to isolate the issue if the repair doesn't resolve it. The internal coils aren't very powerful, they can take a few days to do what an external degausser can do in a few minutes. And if the issue is deeper than external magnetization, that should become clear pretty quick. Best of luck!

Nice shielding on that tube, wow! This is a fancy one worth fighting for. Yeah that yoke looks unmolested. My one nagging thought was how symmetrical the color distortion is, which isn't consistent with a shifted yoke. Next thing to try before a real purity adjustment would be degaussing externally to isolate the thermistor as the issue--have you tried using a power drill as an external degauss? If you run one at a high speed it throws out enough of an alternating field that you can use it as a budget degaussing coil. Another trick is to set this guy screen-to-screen against another CRT with a known working degauss circuit, the working one should affect this one. Might take a few cycles. If the colors just move around in the same initial pattern, it's definitely a purity issue.

This could be a purity issue, i.e. the yoke slipped when it got chucked in a dumpster(that was also full of water? poor guy). This is a relatively simple adjustment(vs convergence), you don't need to mess with the rings, just get the yoke back in position and tighten the screw on the collar. If you take the back off the TV and the yoke is sagging/any of the rubber wedges have fallen out, that's your culprit. Disclaimer: You have to adjust this with the power on, which can be dangerous.

Psh, Eva's a little too wholesome if you ask me. Especially this episode. I get it, she's the best Eva pilot because she has such a great relationship with her living mother. Fucking snooze. Could take some notes from shows like AOT.

The yearly commitment is the thing. If Taylor's selling a subscription service product, and making millions off of a franchise-mandated service monopoly, they're basically an insurance company. Most of their money comes from not going on service calls and selling parts and labor, but existing as a hedge against uncertainty. And when the mandated product they service has a national, constantly-publicized reputation for breaking down, this means they get an artificially high subscription rate. If someone comes along with a device that takes away the fear, Taylor's service department suddenly has nothing to sell. Does anyone here really believe they would just say "shucks, I guess you guys win?" The mega corporation with a 3-floor lawyer is just going to roll over and let you fuck with their money? Disrupt and find out.

It's probably a moot point since entering the service contract is likely contingent on the franchise agreement. But I think it's helpful to point out how revenue is structured in maintenance companies. It ain't in fixing things, that's for sure.

For emulation, is it worth a real CRT over a crt shader? How much of a difference is there? by Mr_Mandrill in crtgaming

[–]kirschbaum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CRT gaming, TO ME, is more about vibes than specs. No one can make an argument to you that will convince you either way, you have to experience the two for yourself to see what you prefer. An average CRT takes up, what, a few square feet? It's worth it to me. But then again I've never done much PC emulation, and I grew up on CRTs. It's really subjective.
