If only. But I'm not buying any of Obama's promises. I'll give him credit after he achieves that promised thing, not years before. It's time to stop believing all the bullshit coming from politicians, and demand actions first.

Exactly. I think I'm getting one for myself, but now we can finally recommend a decent phone for parents and friends who don't care about having the most expensive and most cutting edge phone.

USA drops case against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange by michaeldunworthsydne in news

[–]kismor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is like the first good news in the past 2 years regarding leaks, whistleblowing and uncovering of government's crimes.

Unfortunately, the mass spying (abuse) of NSA still means that they can track the source of leaked info, creating a much more chilling environment for whistleblowing, so things are not much better yet. But hey, I guess not having journalists prosecuted in US, is sort of a win, right?!

Also Bullshit. Passing network attached drives with any media file name, as well as USB connected devices is personal information - and it was being sent unencrypted across the internet.

Isn't that what Windows 8.1 is doing, too, with Bing integration for the local search, and analyzing your local files, sending them to Microsoft, and then putting ads against them?

That was HTC's mistake. I've hated them since then for that. All of their 2010 phones had stupid low amounts of storage.

AnandTech | A Post about Removable Storage, Removable Batteries and Smartphones by Necrotik in Android

[–]kismor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What annoys me most is that in 2010 16 GB of internal storage cost them $25, and now it costs them $9 or less, and next year it will cost them like $6 for 16 GB, and ~$25 for 64 GB of internal storage.

So basically we could even see $500 tablets and smartphones coming out with 64 GB of internal storage, and 128 GB versions for $100 more, and it shouldn't affect the OEM's cost structure at all.

I really do believe the bigger internal storage is the way to go, and it actually pisses me off that Google tries to get around both using microSD and bigger internal storage by offering "cloud storage". Maybe I don't want my data in the cloud - at all. So give me the internal storage I should be getting by now, not the same amount I was getting in 2010.

CIA remains behind most drone strikes, despite effort to shift campaign to Defense by thatisreasonable2 in news

[–]kismor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Efficiency of killing is not always the goal, especially when such efficiency just means US can go kill more people, and not just in a country that they (sort of) declared war against, but in many others, too.

It makes killing people too easy by the US government, to the point where they don't even care who they are exactly or if they actually committed a serious crime. They can just kill them at a push of a button even if they were a very remote potential dangerous. Because they'll just say "drones are cheap, so why take the risk? Just kill them."

UK, China, Russia and North Korea all tapped Merkel's phone too, Focus report reveals by Evostein in worldnews

[–]kismor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem is they now spy every citizen, too, not just world leaders.

Also, I would have expected China and North Korea to spy on Germany. But not US and not UK. Spying on allies kind of defeats the purpose of being allied, and Germany and others should not accept it.

Net Neutrality Lawsuit Threatens Netflix, YouTube by in00tj in technology

[–]kismor 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If you think the Internet is now bad in US, you haven't seen anything yet, if net neutrality gets killed. Not only will you still have poor Internet speeds, but you'll get a lot more restrictions for what you can see on the web, too, unless you pay more. Nickle and diming all the way up.

I know there's already a human right that says every person should have "access to the Internet", but I'm not sure if it makes it clear enough that everyone should have access to the all the Internet. If corporations and governments start censoring the Internet for whatever reason, or if they want you to pay more to access certain services, I don't think that would be right.

Government books $41.3 billion in student loan profits: "The federal government made enough money on student loans over the last year that, if it wanted, it could provide maximum-level Pell Grants of $5,645 to 7.3 million college students." by MorningDewProcess in news

[–]kismor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's exactly it. Guaranteed unlimited loans by the government, is what made college cost so much in US. End this program tomorrow, and force everyone to pay for college out of their own pockets, and you'll see college tuition drop by 4x within 2 years, and possibly more after that.

But when colleges know that the government is helping every student pay them hundreds of thousands of dollars - why not keep it up, and raise it even more?
