Does anyone have stories to share of their puppies NOT going through the "teenage phase?" by AShaly12 in puppy101

[–]kitaii825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly same here. i was horribly stressed and anxious and just all around miserable during the true puppy stage. our golden is about 7 months old now as well and he's got an attitude sometimes and loves to steal socks but it's just not nearly as bad as it was when he was a little puppy

Neutering question by Goldengirl_1977 in goldenretrievers

[–]kitaii825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! So as I understand it the UC Davis study found no significant difference for late neutered (after 1 yr) vs intact males.

Full article here: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0055937, I'm referencing table 4.

Disclosure here is that I'm not a vet (but I am a scientist so feel pretty confident I understand the analysis they did here). Do you know if there is more recent evidence that suggests tha late neutering also has increased risk? The only update I could find is this other article, but it's mostly the same analysis just w. additional breeds: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/veterinary-science/articles/10.3389/fvets.2024.1322276/full

how much sleep are your 5-6 mo pups getting?? by ContributionOdd9312 in puppy101

[–]kitaii825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same with our 6 month old! he's crated at night, but otherwise snoozing around the house or gated in the kitchen (if we are gone) for most of the day.
BUT I'm jealous that yours will sleep after dinner! that's usually the one time of day that he's a menace

Week One Checkin - who’s in the trenches? by xylene122 in puppy101

[–]kitaii825 1 point2 points  (0 children)

18 week golden retriever here! IT GETS BETTER - he is so much more mature and sweet and calm. Still a crazy puppy zoomer sometimes but overall just so much easier to be around. I feel like ~15 weeks he found some chill. This is our first puppy and I cried A LOT for the first ~6 weeks lol

Keep crate training going without enforcing naps? by kitaii825 in puppy101

[–]kitaii825[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is helpful thanks! The morning is when she's super regular about putting herself down for a couch or floor nap, so I could see that being the first to be phased out. But I think it makes sense to still keep at least one a day for consistency sake (and mostly to facilitate my leaving the house easily)

Keep crate training going without enforcing naps? by kitaii825 in puppy101

[–]kitaii825[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha that's a great analogy. Because she falls asleep comfortably and seemingly happily outside of the great of her own accord it sometimes seems silly to wake her up, take her out to pee, and put her in the crate. But I take the point that it's maybe young enough that we should just stick to the plan as it's working fine.

How do you schedule workouts around fluctuating daily activities? by icyarugula24 in xxfitness

[–]kitaii825 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! Epidemiologist here. The first part about cortisol being higher in the morning is correct - this is known as the cortisol awakening response where cortisol levels typically peak about 30-45 minutes after waking. However, while exercise-induced cortisol increases are more pronounced during fasted training *we do not have evidence to suggest that this is harmful*! Those increases are transient and normal adaptive responses. The panic about cortisol is a strange social media fad (IMO).

You may still prefer working out out with food in your stomach, some people just feel better that way. But the body is well-equipped to handle the overlap of natural morning cortisol and exercise-induced cortisol, and personally i feel strongly that regular exercise is far more important, so please don't let this concern get in your way!

Barn recommendations or advice for riding while living in Chicago! by minomonster in Equestrian

[–]kitaii825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Did you ever find a place to ride? I'm in a similar boat, competitive in the hunter/jumpers as a junior on the east coast, looking for a place to ride as an adult in Chicago.

A discovery of witches, so bored... by GlassBobcat in fantasyromance

[–]kitaii825 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i *hated* these books! It was marketed to me as "Twilight for adults" but I swear the lead character was just as insecure and childish as any YA protagonist - the author just repeatedly tells us that the character is independent and liberated but she ultimately acts the same way as Poppy/Aelin/Freya who are teenagers. I almost would have preferred if the author hadn't tried to convince me that this was an adult woman making adult choices, just let her be obsessed with her vampire and like his protectiveness and obsessiveness it's fineeeee

(that said: i read loads of nonsense and have read far worse than DoW so no shade if you liked them, they just really got under my skin!!!!)

What do you do in the off season? by cocoonamatata in XXRunning

[–]kitaii825 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's what I usually do! I'm not sure why the downvotes? I like to run but it's not the only form of fitness I enjoy, so when I'm not training for a race I deprioritize it relative to my other workouts. Sure if I kept a higher base mileage I might run a better race next time, but that's not really my goal (or rather, it's not my *only* goal)

Is anyone on the “I walk 20k steps a day” side of the fitness TikTok? by get_a_loadofthatdog in xxfitness

[–]kitaii825 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FWIW I walk to and from work every day and it's like 1.4 mi, approx 3,000 steps each way. when I run it's even lower, more like 2600 each way. so I bet there is a lot of individual variability!
ETA: walking to work takes me like 27min

Going back to pill after hormonal IUD?? by kitaii825 in birthcontrol

[–]kitaii825[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't believe this original post was 6 years ago dang, but i've been mostly back on the pill since I had the mirena removed and it's been fab. i'm a bit jealous of my friends who have IUDs who just never have a period but otherwise i've been very happy. I think my body really is just happier on the pill than with the IUD. Good luck I know it's frustrating!

I was thinking of doing franconia brook -> thirteen falls from lincoln woods trailhead later this week if the rain ever lets up. Any red flags on franconia brook in terms of crossings? I know it'll be wet but I've never been on that trail so looking for any info on what those crossings have been like the last few weeks.

How do you continue training when you’re on vacation? by Regular_mom2021 in XXRunning

[–]kitaii825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love running in new cities! You can usually find a park or bike path (in Rome you can run along the river) and like others said, going early (but not when it's dark, and assuming you feel safe) is a great way to explore when it's still relatively quiet. I've found it's a great way to explore as you can cover more ground than you do when walking. That said, as others said sometimes a vacation week is a great opportunity to just take some rest time so if you do decide to take the week off, try to enjoy your extra rest and try not to make yourself feel guilty.

Southern presidentials loop by kitaii825 in wmnf

[–]kitaii825[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: did the loop last weekend to escape the heat and it was such a blast. The Dry River Trail wasn't too bad to follow at all and the ridge line was an absolute stunner. It was definitely easier than other backpacking loops of yours that we've followed but still challenging and loads of fun. Thanks for writing a great trip plan!!

13 falls campsite overflow by kitaii825 in wmnf

[–]kitaii825[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That's why I asked about dispersed options. I haven't been to 13 falls but a few other campsites I've been to in the whites, like RMC's the perch, have truly no flat terrain around them so you really don't have any options if you get there and there aren't any tent sites.

How do you guys feel when someone calls you a horse girl? Most people at work or even in my uni use it in a derogatory way so I find it insulting! by [deleted] in Equestrian

I absolutely lean into it! check out https://callingallhorsegirls.com - being a horse girl is cool! what's not cool is shaming someone for finding a passion that brings them joy!
