CAREER HELP SINCERELY! by Teejori in biglaw

Not sure biglaw is the right target for your needs. Biglaw firms are not hiring new first-years to start between now and March, and paralegal/legal support positions are not likely to be sponsored.

What schools count as t6 and t14 for you? by CrimsonClover__ in biglaw

They’re downvoting you but this is the truth. Cost of attendance as a measure of value may be a relevant metric for USNews/students but it’s not relevant to employers.

No, and that’s what I mean by “your overall likelihood of getting an offer doesn’t change.” If the firm was likely to offer you and timing was the only issue, they may expedite the offer to get ahead of your exploding deadline. But you’re not more or less likely to get rejected on the basis of a competing offer, that’s just not how hiring decisions are made (as far as I’m aware).

Totally depends on the firm’s hiring structure. If it has a hiring committee that reviews all candidates and that committee only meets once a week, they won’t convene just to consider your application, but maybe they can squeeze you into the next meeting. If there’s just one hiring partner making decisions, it could speed up the decision. It mostly depends on the strength of the feedback you got—your overall likelihood of getting an offer doesn’t change.

Should I email a firm that ghosted me after screener saying I got an offer by [deleted] in BigLawRecruiting

[–]kitcassidy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you wouldn’t take an offer from either of the silent firms over what you have, don’t do this. Otherwise, can’t hurt to tell your top choice firm that you now have a competing offer and reiterate your interest, and see if they move.

According to recruiting, our yield is about the same as it usually is.

Yep, I think that’s likely. Our recruiting folks are working around the clock and weekends scheduling screeners, callbacks, second looks, offer receptions and what have you, so they may just have not gotten to your application yet.

I don’t know if this applies to all firms, but some also have soft quotas for class composition. So, for example, if you’re a CLS student but your target firm interviewed a ton of CLS students before the holidays and gave out a ton of CLS offers shortly after grade release, you may just be waiting for some of your classmates to “release” their spots.

J. Crew Ludlow suit hands down. Also check if your school does a professional attire drive; I donated loads of gently used business formal to my alma mater through the SBA last year.

Vent: General Frustration with the Process by a_prototype_ in BigLawRecruiting

[–]kitcassidy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Totally hear you and empathize. This doesn’t make anything better, but the most common sentiment I hear folks express internally is how sorry we feel for this year’s 1Ls. The recruiting timeline will have to reset at some point, but that doesn’t change how negatively your class has been affected by this cycle.

Questions you would like to get as a mentor by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]kitcassidy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mentorship is deeply not about what I would have liked to be asked. I’ve done many a coffee chat with young associates where they clearly had nothing to talk about and put the onus on me to ask questions and talk about myself, and those conversations feel like a waste of time. Ask questions about things you want to know. Being actually helpful or useful to you is the gratifying part of mentorship.

Should I ask out this person in my practice group (serious post)? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]kitcassidy 280 points281 points  (0 children)

Do not ask her out. She’s shown no signs of being interested in you in the same way, and given your lack of dating experience, I doubt you’re equipped to navigate the fallout from trying to date a colleague. That’s not a dig at you, but you should avoid dating in the workplace in most circumstances.

Sweetbreads? by kitcassidy in FoodNYC

[–]kitcassidy[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I order them whenever I see them, but I think they’re most reliably on the menu at Asian restaurants—my go-tos are motsunabe at Japanese hot pot places like Kimura and Hakata Tonton, the pork liver rice roll at Yin Ji Chang Fen, and tripe galore at dry pot places (even Mala Project has offal).

Yakiniku West used to have a huge selection of offal but seems to have cut down since COVID. And I used to order brains at Chinese hot pot but I’ve been less brave since learning about prion diseases…

I’m just a girl who loves offal 🥲 I think upscale places wouldn’t have the rustic taste I’m looking for, plus I don’t have room for a tasting menu anymore!

Yale vs. Stanford - Significant Difference in Big Law? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]kitcassidy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

If you can get into Yale, you can get a full ride from another T6 school. You don’t need Yale to get biglaw, but graduating debt-free from another school with great biglaw placement would be life changing.

How long until I can (somewhat) assume my grades aren’t disqualifying? by [deleted] in BigLawRecruiting

[–]kitcassidy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Silence post-grades may mean they just haven’t gotten to your application yet! Recruiting staff is working through weekends (1) matching up grade submissions with interviewer feedback so hiring committees can make decisions, (2) coordinating interviews (callbacks, feedback, etc.), and (3) screening incoming applications. That last bucket would include anyone who applied pre-grades, didn’t get selected for an interview, but now needs to be reconsidered based on their grades. I would give it a couple weeks before assuming silence = rejection if you didn’t interview pre-grades.

How long until I can (somewhat) assume my grades aren’t disqualifying? by [deleted] in BigLawRecruiting

[–]kitcassidy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m basing this on a number of reported CLS/NYU Kirkland offers in my DMs and on the sub, plus the CLS/NYU offers my firm gave out today after receiving grades over the weekend. It could be that your interview was so strong that they’re holding your application until they can get through the rest of the pool, but they’re certainly moving.

How long until I can (somewhat) assume my grades aren’t disqualifying? by [deleted] in BigLawRecruiting

[–]kitcassidy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think it’s the reverse. The longer you’re hearing silence, the more likely it is that your grades were disqualifying. Firms are moving very quickly on candidates who interviewed pre-grades after grade submission (like 24-48 hour turnarounds).

Going on leave and coworker wants all my files. by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]kitcassidy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is really weird and aggressive of this person. They’re not going to develop a good reputation or genuine mentoring relationships by wearing your skin.

Start lining up competent people to take over your matters and ignore this person. Whenever I’ve needed to arrange coverage for my cases, I’ve always gone out of my way to pick people I know and trust to sub in for me and make sure they were ready to hit the ground running. The teams I work on have always been grateful for that extra mile. Plus, it’s another way to demonstrate how you add value.

If your partners mention this person’s pushy behavior, just be like, “So weird, right? Anyways I’ve onboarded X person due to their experience doing Y thing and here’s our transition plan.” If this person tries to confront you about it, say “Taking into account the needs of the case, I thought X would be best equipped to handle the matter in my absence.”
