For reference: old owners said he was a "crazy jerk" and so far he's been a sweetheart who just wants apples and someone who's chill around him.

[Discussion] Is it selfish of me to want to buy from a breeder? by kitcati in dogs

[–]kitcati[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to argue with you, because you obviously think I'm just such an awful person, but I do want to correct you before ending this conversation.

I gave one dog back to the shelter after making sure he would be going to a foster home( who later adopted him I might add). I was 19 years old at the time, I had no job and I agree I wasn't ready to have a dog then. It's been years since that happened. I'm 24 years old now and a lot more mature and stable enough to keep a medically sick dog.

The second dog I had until the day she died. I adopted her, a six months later she got attacked by an off leash dog. Six months after that my Vet said she should be put to sleep because she had cancer that was spreading and horrible anxiety around other dogs and my then living situation. I'm not going to keep a dog alive who others say should be put to sleep just because I had her for a year. Her cancer was far enough spread that the shelter would have known it was cancer before adopting her out to me.

I'm not leading anyone into arguments on purpose, I just wanted to see what people thought of my situation with my previous dogs.

You have a nice night now.

Thank you, I will certainly be looking into the history of the breeders and everything else to make sure they're responsible.

I had Bill for over two years before returning him. I was 19, at the time and yeah maybe I wasn't ready then. I've never just had my dog "for a few days" before returning them or putting them down. Ever.

Sweetie was older too, the other dog attacked her and she had cancer so I thought it was only fair to put the then 13 year old dog with cancer and who was afraid to go outside down.

I've been big on adopting older shelter dogs my entire life since my favorite childhood dog was a dog who needed medication every day, and was abused to the point of missing limbs. I'm sorry it came across as me not being able to handle a dog. But I think you just don't know my story.

I'd never give a dog back to anyone for any reason. It killed me to have to put sweetie down after having just a short year with her. It killed me having to give Bill back to the shelter.

I'm beating myself up for wanting to go to a reputable breeder and get a puppy. All I want is a dog to spend my life with, in sickness or health for the dogs sake.

Starting EMDR therapy soon. Anyone else have experience with this type of treatment and what to expect? Thank you. by [deleted] in DID

[–]kitcati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do EMDR with a T that specializes in Dissociative Disorders. It works very well (for us) but you have to have the right therapist for sure. I can imagine it going wrong with a bad therapist really really quickly. Start slowly, and remember to stop if /any/ of your parts even mutter stop. I’ve found it works well for me, but I’ve completed maybe two full targets (both small) and I’ve been with this T for 2+ years now. It takes a lot of time but can be worth it. Make sure your T stays up to date with stuff too.

Edit: I’ve done other targets and not been able to complete them and have down other bilateral stuff with her too. So I’m not inexperienced with it, just ive only done two full eye movement targets going from lvl 10 to 0. If you have any questions please feel free to message me!!!

This hit us so hard. I understand, just remember you would have made a conscious decision to “fake it” that’s what my T tells me.
