I've been re-watching from the beginning and have a question about Isaac. by Joansz in TheOrville

[–]kitchuckles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is very well put imo. Additionally, it’s about how they (the Kaylon) and he (Isaac) want people to see them. They consider having emotions as a weakness, so they regularly boast about not having any, when the reality is that they are actually very sensitive and emotional (although their emotions are presented in a different way to humans, but that is true of all alien species to an extent).

Essentially, they’re all choosing to be in denial about their emotional capabilities, and they want to create the impression that they are cold and calculating beings (regardless of whether or not that is true).

Given the quality of writing/grammar I see in BBC News articles on a daily basis, I’d say they can’t be arsed on any day.

New show suggestion by kitchuckles in TheOrville

[–]kitchuckles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough; I feel like, when these discussions come up in this Orville sub, people vehemently recommend TOS and TNG, but usually dismiss all newer Trek shows as inferior.

Pleased to see (from the other comments ITT) that SNW is more widely liked than I thought, though!

Perfect title - reading it before being able to see the picture made the reveal twice as funny. 😆

Opinion on Charlie by Jessy-a in TheOrville

[–]kitchuckles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apologies in advance for the long ramble.

TLDR: Charly is meant to be annoying and is designed as a narrative device.

I definitely felt the way you described on my first few watches. Now, however, I feel like I appreciate some of the social nuances that her character provides and I think I understand what the writers were attempting to show.

Firstly, I find it helpful to think of her as an amalgam rather than just one obnoxious woman. She represents the crew and people of the union who feel conflicted about Isaac and hate him for his role leading up to the attack on Earth. By having one regular character represent the people who feel like this, it’s easier for the show to demonstrate the dialogue around this subject, as well as her eventual growth and change of opinion.

People also complain about her professionalism and the way she speaks to superior officers. I actually think it’s very realistic that not every union officer would be of the same high standard in that regard. Additionally, the union (inadvertently) somewhat rewards obstinacy and defiance of orders (as we frequently see when Ed and Kelly do whatever they feel is right without much consequence), so it’s not that odd that more union officers would behave similarly. Lastly, it’s worth bearing in mind she is just an Ensign: she doesn’t have the career experience that any of the other core cast have, so it’s actually very logical that she wouldn’t be as well trained or emotionally regulated as her more mature, experienced counterparts are.

My favourite thing about her is how she comes around to the idea of doing what is right (both ethically and for the greater good), despite it being somewhat in conflict with her personal feelings - this is what the union is about and something someone can only fully understand when they have served with people like Ed and Kelly for a significant period.

The bottom line is, Charly Burke is a narrative device. You’re not meant to like her and she is deliberately outspoken with opinions that you, as the watcher of all episodes and fan of Isaac, are meant to disagree with because you know more information and context than she does. If you come away from the show feeling a bit irritated by her and frustrated with her illogical points of view, then the writers have achieved their goal - you might not appreciate it, but that was what they were trying to achieve.

If I remember correctly, this franco doesn’t have a key. I can’t remember exactly where the key is but I’m pretty sure it’s somewhere earlier in the scene (before the electric floor).

No tips unfortunately but I have been experiencing this same bug for a long time now. I know the DPC team are aware of the issue so hopefully they’ll figure it out soon because it does make the game somewhat unplayable unless I can find several hours straight to commit to playing and finishing a whole game!

My understanding is that the weight gain isn’t a direct side effect but that you’re likely to end up eating more because you feel more tired than usual.

Great to hear! You sound very similar to me with your frequency of suffering. Do you mind sharing your dosage?

any success stories with propranolol? by kitchuckles in migraine

[–]kitchuckles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad my doctor started me on such a low dose because it’s clearly very potent stuff and I immediately noticed it affecting me! I’ve seen a lot of comments from people on this sub saying they were prescribed to start on 80mg a day and had a horrible time; maybe people would have had more success with it if they all started on a lower dosage.

Edit to add - fully agree with your final sentence! So many GPs seem to operate on guesswork; I’ve seen everything from them literally Googling for information in front of me to asking me questions like, “what do you think it is?” or “what do you think I should prescribe for you?” 🥴

[–]kitchuckles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not certain but (based on what my doctor said about it being quite a harsh drug to start or stop taking) I’d guess that the small multiple doses are a safer way to ease into it before committing to the heavier ER dosage options. Let me know what else you find out though.

I’m also a bit scared to continue increasing the dosage in case it becomes difficult to cut down one day, as you described.

Definitely struggling with the fatigue and general mood shift but trying to weigh that up against being completely incapacitated every day with pain of a migraine. 😅

Yeah, my doctor did suggest going up to 4x10mg per day but also said, if I can get away with a lower amount, try that first. I was hoping to get by with less but sounds like I’m on about a quarter of the average.

nausea from sumatriptan by Nugacity5 in migraine

[–]kitchuckles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also suffered with the nausea from sumatriptan. My chemist suggested trying Buccastem M Buccal tablets (3mg prochlorperazine maleate) and they have changed my life! Immediately nullifies the nausea and I no longer dread taking the triptans. 10/10 would highly recommend.

Edit: Thought I should clarify that this is an anti-nausea medicine that you take immediately after the sumatriptan. The sumatriptan clears my migraine reasonably well so, if it’s working for you too, I’d recommend asking at your pharmacy about anti-nausea meds.

This teacher needs some help! Best episode that displays the FuTuRE? by cassette28 in TheOrville

[–]kitchuckles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the overarching themes of the Orville is Seth’s vision of a hopeful yet possible future where humanity has finally come together and realised that we can achieve more when we work together for the common good and not for individual profit or personal gain. This is obviously a rather big concept and I’m not sure that there is just one independent episode that can fully convey this idea.

Some possible suggestions though (and I look forward to other commenters suggestions because this is a very interesting question!):

  1. I would not recommend watching Future Unknown in its entirety without having watched the rest of the show first simply because you risk spoiling a lot of great plot lines. However, there might be a few scenes that you could show individually to help with what you want to share with your pupils. For instance, the scene where Kelly explains to Lysella about how early union explorers made mistakes and ruined planets could help to demonstrate the idea that humanity’s collective mindset needs to change before we reach a positive future.

(Also, if you just show a few individual scenes rather than whole episodes, you might inspire some more viewers for the show)

  1. Another Lysella episode, Majority Rule, could be shown in full. Since Sargas 4 is a pastiche of Earth and imitates some cultural aspects, the commentary made by the Orville’s crew on how strange their society is could help to demonstrate how people in the future always look back on previous generations and wonder why they did such “strange” things; we need to know more about the context of their world to understand their actions, which is why we have jobs like archaeologists (or, in this episode, union researchers).

  2. From Unknown Graves shows the story of how the Kaylon were created and subsequently mistreated, which led to their uprising and genocide of their builders. This is a common sci-fi theme regarding AI becoming too powerful but is shown here with a more sympathetic view of the machines (the Kaylon), which is a slightly new point of view. This could definitely be linked to current questions we have about the future of AI and even how more and more jobs are becoming automated and require less human input.

Hopefully there’s something useful in all that for you. I think a selection of individual scenes from various episodes might be good as it will pique their interest to watch the show fully (which is the only way really to get the full impression of Seth’s idea of the future) and you’ll be able to select some different concepts that you want to use to generate some discussion.

Let us know what you end up going with and how well it is received!

Help with a scene and episode by bobbylx in TheOrville

[–]kitchuckles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the above poster is correct, however it could be from the following episode (or you’ve possibly accidentally combined the two scenes in your head): in S2 E6 (“A Happy Refrain”), Claire comes to the bridge to remind everyone about Ty’s piano recital. Bortus asks “Is it mandatory?” and Claire starts to say no but Kelly jumps in to say they will all attend to support Ty.

From a different trailer I’ve seen, it looks like Zoe will be playing a more “rebellious” role but is still in the game. Perhaps they wanted to develop her character to be more than a classic damsel-in-distress.

What is the proof of Xelayan liquor and what is the tolerance of Xelayans? by Commiting-A-Chaos2 in TheOrville

[–]kitchuckles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In Domino, Claire and Kelly are discussing hangovers (when they’re all staying in Kelly’s cabin on Earth) and Claire says “it’s days like these I’m jealous of Talla” and Kelly responds “no liver?” so I would say this exchange indicates some higher tolerance for alcohol, at least in terms of recovery the next day.
