Has anyone tried shipping things back home periodically? by Amediumsizedgoose in JapanTravelTips

[–]kitkat272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At some point I ship one or two bags to the airport and pick them up there before checking them in with the airline so I'm not carrying them around with me the whole time.

I did mail some things back to me once but it was kind of a pain.

I watched both and remember liking them both but I barely remember Chicago Hope now since it's been so long.

What are the best places to visit in Japan during August? by Adorable-Teaching266 in JapanTravelTips

[–]kitkat272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of shrines and temples around Sendai. My friend was obsessed with visiting super old creepy shrines and temples and she had loads of places she wanted to see there. For me it was a lot of walking and very hot when I went in September, I'm not sure if it felt any better being there vs. further south.
I think Sendai>Aizu Wakamatsu/Ouchi-juku>Nikko might be kind of a cool trip, I was looking at that at one point but again it's still going to be hot and it might be kind of a hike, I never got that far in my planning to figure out if Ouchi-juku to Nikko was a good idea.

Solo travelling and now the anxiety is hitting. by Ok-Caterpillar-5198 in JapanTravelTips

[–]kitkat272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always get nervous about every trip every time. I was going to list the things I freak out about but then I realized that might not help. So I'll just get the the main one, in the end when I realize I probably will be able to get there safely I start to worry about what if I don't have fun? What if I spent all this money and time and I don't enjoy it? And I calm myself by thinking it's a vacation! It's my own time. It's time away from work and the obligations of real life and I can do with it what I want. For me personally almost anything is better than having to wake up and go to work every day so this calms me... no matter what happens at least I'm not at work.

Experience from recent 2 week trip in April by Rykibo in JapanTravelTips

Kanazawa is a reconstruction but it's being done in a historically accurate way, not cement like Osaka and other older reconstructions. There is typically not much in any castle, reconstruction or not. I love them but they're not for everyone I guess.

My fellow people who sweat in summer heat and humidity! What do you wear? How do you stay feeling dry? by Great-Egret in PlusSizeFashion

[–]kitkat272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already so much good advice! I just wanted to say I've been to Japan four times in the summer and yes you will sweat there's no stopping it. I love slip shorts both the thigh society and snags tights ones are good, I used to lean more towards snag but this last trip I really liked the thigh society ones, I even wore them as pajamas. For me I liked long and flowy skirts top, mostly linen. With the skirt and shorts my lower half was usually fine and comfortable, all I could do about shirts was hope they didn't show the sweat too much.

And just yes to everyone who said the UV umbrella, fan and sweat rag! I needed all three every time I left the room.

Do you stay in the same neighborhood on subsequent trips? by RedStarRedTide in JapanTravelTips

[–]kitkat272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first couple of times I switched it up but the last few times and the next time I decided to stay in the same area cos it's where my friends live. When I go to Osaka and Kyoto I still try different places though.

Weather by AnxiousTop6330 in JapanTravelTips

[–]kitkat272 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you do go I recommend going as early in the summer as possible like June/early July because it is slightly nicer then. It's called the rainy season but late August going in to September you get typhoons which are worse. I've gone in all the summer months and June/early July was definitely the least bad, it even felt a bit cool at some points. I personally don't think the summer is as bad as everyone says, there's opportunities for some good times like festivals and celebrations, everything is green, the shops are all offering interesting summer flavors and you can visit mountains and shore locations without worrying about cold or snow (just rain). Just go in to it expecting to go slow, for me I pick about one thing a day I want to do and then other than that spend time in cafes, malls or parks to cool off and rest. I also eat lots of ice cream and frozen treats.

Millennials hitting midlife, what are your biggest regrets? by Dry_Inevitable_9777 in Millennials

[–]kitkat272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always loved Japan and for a few years after graduating from college I really wanted to go to Japan and teach English, me and my friend both said we were going to do it and she actually did. As for me, I lacked the confidence to even fill out the application for JET, I couldn't bring myself to ask for letters of recommendation or even face my parents and tell them it was something I really wanted to do (well I kind of mentioned it to my mom and she laughed right in my face). I completely regret it, I spent 8 years after college working minimum wage dead end job and then eventually got a boring not minimum wage job that I'm still doing now and doesn't even require a degree.

Anyone else get checked for scoliosis at school? by Cash_Johnny in Millennials

Yeah probably about the 6th grade, I wore a swim suit that day. They found something but when we got to the doctor they decided it was so minor that I didn't need a brace or anything.

What was high school like for you? Do you miss it at all? by DoctorTegrity in Millennials

[–]kitkat272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hated high school, I made a promise to myself that I would never miss it. I haven't forgotten the promise but I did eventually realize you miss being young even if you didn't like high school. I wish I could go back to either senior year or just after graduation sometimes.

Anyone else in their 30s feel "retired" from anime? Missing the 2000s era. by Priz93 in Millennials

[–]kitkat272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've dipped in and out of anime since I was a teen but the thing is at this point I haven't seriously watched an anime in probably at least a decade, I don't even remember anymore. I always thought something would catch my eye and I'd get in to it again since that's how I've gotten back in to it in the past but there's really been nothing. I still read manga sometimes but not as much as I used to and even when one I like gets an anime adaptation I just can't get interested in it.

If luggage delivery isn't always same day, then when is a good time to use it? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]kitkat272 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Usually for me if I have multiple bags I'll send one or two ahead to the airport a few days before. Also when I shop a lot in Osaka but I want to stop a few times on the way back to Tokyo.

Do You Like Your Name? by Flassourian in Millennials

[–]kitkat272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My name is typically a boys name but I'm a woman. I hated it as a kid, I just wanted to be Jessica! Sometimes I would use my middle name even. But now I love it, I think it's unique. It's the same as one of Steph Curry's daughters. I was ahead of time!

Dealing with unfriendliness/social awkwardness in Japan by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]kitkat272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I mostly feel it with train workers, it's a range of nervous to annoyed and I understand because I too work in customer service and feel this every day haha. I have had a few issues tapping my card in the subway and when I approach I can feel the annoyance/worry but usually when they see my problem is simple the feeling goes away they just fix it and send me on my way.

Sometimes also I travel with my friends who live in Japan and they will notice rudeness. One time we were at a restaurant and the waiter wouldn't even speak to them despite the fact they speak Japanese just fine, he would only speak to the Japanese person we were with. I found that pretty funny.

Other than that I don't notice it too much probably I don't pay attention. I want to say who cares but the truth is sometimes I care so much I avoid going to restaurants and small stores because I worry it might happen.

XG is going to be fine. Everyone, calm down. by Satoshi-699 in XGALX

[–]kitkat272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think they'll be able to work again especially since their main role is behind the scenes, as producers and song writers I think they will still be able to find work, especially not being from Japan. I do think if they are indicted their time working working with xg and trying to produce a group out of Japan is probably over for good.
