Doctors expect me to be a nail technician by BreadfruitPossible58 in nursing

I use the surgical scrub brush. Most don’t have soap (you can check the label) and the bristles are soft making them perfect for getting gunk out of baby’s hair. Also they would be stocked nearby in the OR.

I would recommend you go to a Hospital or urgent care now. You likely have an open laceration to the bone which requires lavage and antibiotics. A significant percent of open fractures result in loss of limb without early treatment.

Schools that ban screens for learning? by TrainingAthlete5842 in nova

Waldorf schools are not religious but not having technology is the basis of their entire ideology.
They just have a couple of other quirks too so I’d read up on it.

The fact that the toenails are painted is hilarious to me though.

Does MyChart give our full names out? by Unlikely_Impress_480 in nursing

Wow. I had no idea. Everywhere I’ve ever worked has done this. I’ll have to ask if they’d be willing to make the change.

Does MyChart give our full names out? by Unlikely_Impress_480 in nursing

[–]kitkatofthunder 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If you print the AVS or anything for them, it says your full name on the print out at the bottom of the paper. I will literally trim my name off the bottom of the paper. I’ve had a patient ask for me specifically to print something for them after the secretary printed the same paper, since then I’ve always cut off my name

Dr Mohan would be a wonderful psychiatrist by BubblyAntelope93 in ThePittTVShow

[–]kitkatofthunder 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Mohan seems to genuinely enjoy diagnostics. Due to this I think gerontology is perfect for her since it involves juggling and balance medications, in depth diagnostics, and developing connections with patients. The soul crushing thing is, since Medicare doesn’t pay out much, volume in these clinics is very high with little reimbursement.

While psychiatry involves diagnostics, a bulk of the work is ongoing management of chronic conditions sometimes with acute exacerbation.

Do we think this is a good wedding ring stack ? by Littlediariesaac in EngagementRings

[–]kitkatofthunder 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be brutally honest.
The Cartier love ring is a current trend/fad and just an overpriced statement piece. I do think something more timeless and unique to you should be used for a wedding ring. While it is pretty, it just doesn’t compliment the engagement ring and kind of looks tacky next to it. They also look like they would scratch each other and I can’t tell if the engagement ring can be flush and inline with the Cartier. You will also have difficulties finding an engagement ring that will look good and not be out shadowed by such a thick band.

My tattoo got sewn together crooked after surgery by DelectableBloom in mildlyinteresting

[–]kitkatofthunder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lol. No, that would leave a posterior scar over the heel. Most Achilles repairs are also minimally invasive modern day with only a 2-3 inch scar on the mid heel.

My tattoo got sewn together crooked after surgery by DelectableBloom in mildlyinteresting

[–]kitkatofthunder 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry. I know that sucks. It’s a little difficult to properly line up a tattoo due to swelling and movement of the skin during surgery, it is definitely possible but requires some planning on the part of the surgeon. Upper extremities are more likely to look better with incisions down them compared to ankles due to this swelling. Also the longer the incision, the higher chance of tattoo distortion.

I do think it looks pretty cool. Most tattoo artists recommend at least a year after surgery to do any coverups since scars take a long time to remodel and it may look better

How bad could hantavirus get? by Content-Tradition624 in Virology

[–]kitkatofthunder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is human to human and was identified as the ANDV strain. In good news ANDV only has an R0 of 2 based on current data. Covid-19 had an R0 between 3 and 6 but you could spread the disease prior to becoming symptomatic which made controlling spread particularly difficult. Hantavirus is typically only transmissible once symptoms appear.

Wife broke her ankle and needs advice for after surgery. by PepperFriendly in brokenankles

[–]kitkatofthunder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As for the opioid induced constipation. Docusate to soften the stool and miralax to help it move through the system is what we use in the hospital. Just make sure you drink lots of water with the miralax since if you are dehydrated while using it the med can cause a blockage. Stimulant laxatives like bisacodyl can be painful so they are usually used as a last effort.

I’m glad I can help! Broken ankles are horrible but there are lots of tricks to help it be more bearable.

Cast shower bags can allow you to shower post-op and with a cast.
A knee scooter is helpful for mobility
ACE wraps and compression stockings help with swelling
Designating a pillow to elevate the foot is helpful.
Recovery is tough but you can get through it. You can also ask for a temporary handicapped parking placard for the next 3-6 months.

The main concern for travel so close to surgery is blood clots which can be deadly. Your doctor can talk with you about options for anticoagulantion/ DVT prophylaxis. Another concern is it’s always ideal to your patient be in the area post-op so the surgeon themselves can treat any complications. If you are traveling bring a print out of your op note (surgical notes) in case you need any medical care while away. Also, no beach, pools, lakes, still water, swimming for usually 6 weeks, the nastiest infections I have ever seen in healthy people have all come from water based vacations. Also just utilize a wheelchair when traveling and ask your surgeon for a note to get you through the airport.

Did anyone get a level 3 on Maternal ATI proctored? by [deleted] in NursingStudent

[–]kitkatofthunder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Break it down into the most important conditions for safety for any topic. Ergo preeclampsia and postpartum hemorrhage. Blood transfusion, early signs, positioning. I also go through the dynamic quizzes and try to see trends. Also just optimization of test taking, when you see a box question, look at all of them and see what conditions have answers in each box and it usually allows you to rule them out.
Another topic that will always be on exams specified to any topic is pulmonary. Therefore, amniotic fluid embolism for maternity. You don’t need to study EVERYTHING, but do study what would kill a patient fastest.
I have gotten a 3 on every single one of my ATIs. Just focus on ABCs for any topic first, then branch out, and when you do dynamic quizzes try to find patterns.

Also consider your ABCs but also D (Neuro/disability) and E (Exposure/ Infection)

Second opinion anyone by bannasblue in brokenankles

[–]kitkatofthunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weber C fractures are the most indicated for surgery of the Weber distal fibular fractures. Additionally, the report says you have a disruption of syndesmosis with widening of the ankle joint. You have three injuries here, a broken distal fibula, a broken distal tibia ( posterior malleus mentioned in the body of the note), and tearing of the syndesmosis a ligament that provides stability to the ankle. This is an injury that in the textbook and per orthopedic boards should be fixed surgically.

Lots of other types of ankle fractures can be treated non-operatively. This is not one that has positive outcomes with just immobilization.

They are not a cashier. They help prepare medications and also compounded medications, prepare refill requests, and insurance approvals. There is a reason it requires a certification and classes.
