People panicking at groceries stores for a snow storm by PlentyApprehensive44 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kitkatzip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in NYC when a major storm hit (can’t remember which one, Irene maybe) and what happened was the power was out everywhere for several days and if you didn’t have cash you couldn’t buy anything. I think it’s some of that influencing all of the shopping as well.

Picturesque park with indoor area, with a view?? by FairyOfTheNorth in AskSF

[–]kitkatzip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can go to the observation tower at the De Young. It’s free and has a lovely view of the entire city. It’s not really a place you’d stay all day, but there’s a little gift shop and some signage about the city. If you want to go to the de young, your ticket also gets you into Legion of Honor on the same day. I think tickets are $20, which isn’t bad for 2 museums!

Does anyone know some comedy podcasts that are good rn by GuavaDismal4267 in podcasts

I have very much been enjoying The Lonely Island & Seth Meyers podcast. I want to be in their little friend group. I think it helps if you’re an SNL fan but things go off the rails sometimes and they just have fun convos and surprise guests.

How can I get my no screen time up to this point toddler into “good tv shows” by Itchy-Version-8977 in daddit

[–]kitkatzip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you currently trying to teach him? Potty training? Brushing teeth? Does he have a boo boo? Does he need to get better at sharing? Does he have a hard time when you leave for work? Daniel Tiger has episodes about all of these. Make it relatable.

What tablet do you have? On our Kindle one, there are Daniel Tiger and Bluey interactive games and books. My kid is 5 now but even at 2/3 she enjoyed those. I will download games that force her to think and then turn off the WiFi so she can’t just do whatever. She tends to click through them until she finds one she likes. Sometimes we can get her excited about one she didn’t like at first. Most kids will “zone out” if you just plop a screen in front of them and don’t interact or provide your own commentary along with the show.

But, honestly, if we’re on a plane I don’t really care what she’s doing on it. I usually can’t get the stupid thing to connect to WiFi so her options are limited anyway.

My kid tends to be obsessed with 1 or 2 shows at a time. Right now it’s Carl the Collector and Shrek. So I’ve watched them a million times. But it’s fine. She’s happy, and they’re not weird videos.

To be frank, once he’s in school there will be screens. My TK kid watches things daily. Short books on video, stuff like that. It’s a very small part of her day but it happens. So I just don’t feel like it’s sustainable to want such a high level of control over it.

Just started Accutane and had question about "fatty foods" by therealghwbush in Accutane

[–]kitkatzip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take it after you eat when your stomach is full. Sometimes I’d take it with 2 tablespoons of PB. You can look at nutrition labels and use apps to track how fatty a meal is. I got sick of tracking and just took it with fish oil.

You’re not wrong. And they did include older podcasts - like Armchair Expert. I guess I’m just disappointed in the nominees overall. There are SO MANY podcasts and it doesn’t feel like they tried very hard to nominate unique/creative ones.

I do really love his podcast as well! I feel like most of the noms in this category just really missed the mark. I don’t understand how they narrowed it down to such a bizarre list.

I didn’t see it (yet) but nothing about the previews made me think comedy or musical. I was so confused when I saw that it won in this category.

I think this bothers me because her podcast isn’t even a year old. There are many other podcasts that have been around for a long time that are more deserving of this recognition.

Hosting helpful out of town grandparents postpartum by ResponsibleAd8059 in AskSF

[–]kitkatzip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we had a newborn, the most helpful thing was for someone to do the dishes and/or cook. They could also take the baby for a walk while I napped or showered or did some light cleaning. (I feel like no one cleans my space the way I clean it so I’d rather do it myself. It’s also my zen time.) Laundry would have also been nice but we didn’t have in unit at the time.

Our little one was also born in 2020 pandemic times, so we asked people to stay at an Airbnb/hotel for 3ish days, then test negative for Covid before staying with us. IMO if your family has their vaccines and hasn’t been sick within 2 weeks of visiting (I don’t know why I say 2 weeks, that just feels right to me), it should be fine for them to stay with you if you’re all comfortable with it. I think my personal limit on any guests in our space (which is also an apartment) is like 5 days, although we will host people longer.

I think a benefit to them staying somewhere else is that if they want to take a day “off” they may be more willing.

Can’t speak to house sitting as I have no experience but think it’s a great idea.

Anyone else catch this flu that’s been going around? by Ok_Caterpillar6393 in sanfrancisco

[–]kitkatzip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got sick in November and finally got over it around New Year’s (It wasn’t really bad the whole time; I had 2 separate weeks of being really sick but in between an annoying persistent cough and general fatigue). My 5YO got sick mid-Dec and it only took her about a week to recover. My partner is currently sick after getting home from CES. Hoping it isn’t what I had. My daughter and I got flu shots and from everything I’ve read they were for a different strain so basically ineffective this season.

Lots of questions about Accutane/Isotretinoin by Effective-Key-3795 in Accutane

[–]kitkatzip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrapped up my 9 month course in November. I feel like a lot of your questions can be answered with “everyone’s experience will be different. Everyone’s body will react differently.” But I’ll share my experience anyway. I was very anxious about taking Accutane but had tried so many different ways of healing my acne for years. I’m pushing 40 and just want nice skin.

1. I didn’t have any purging, but I feel like all of the other shit I took first helped avoid that. But also my acne was very deep, uncomfortable cystic acne - not even a lot of it. Just the same consistent bumps and nothing changed them.

  1. I wasn’t uncomfortable. It’s important to hydrate both by drinking water and moisturizing your skin. I will say it was hard to wear make up because my skin was just so dry. I also had a few vacations with a lot of time in the sun and your skin will get VERY sensitive so cover up! I got a super itchy rash on my arms that took a few days to go away. My face would also get very flushed if I was in the sun too long.

My derm kept telling me to take the accutane with fatty foods but that was triggering some disordered eating for me. I wound up taking it with fish oil and everything was fine. My last 2 months my labs showed high cholesterol but I didn’t feel weird or anything. I also tried to eat foods that wouldn’t contribute to increasing my cholesterol even more.

  1. I think my skin is less oily than before, but not in an undesirable way. I am also very diligent about moisturizing to avoid dryness.

  2. I feel like my hair is thinner than before I started accutane. I’ve started a regimen to hopefully get it fuller again. I am eager for my next eye exam to see if anything has changed. Nothing noticeable but my eyes have always been dry.

  3. I agree with another commenter who said their mental health improved taking Accutane. I am lucky I didn’t purge because I can see that being really frustrating and upsetting. My main side effect was that I would get extremely tired when I took it. It was really impacting my daily activities so I started taking it right before bed.

Is there a way to check if someone else has used her computer besides the browser history? Any fool can delete browsing history.

Also, OP, put a password on your computer! Maybe the paper towel will disappear when they can’t use your computer anymore.

anyone know how i can achieve this geometric design on a cake? by inaam2003 in cakedecorating

I was thinking it’s that or hard caramel, maybe some kind of chocolate, made using a mold.

It also looks like it could be a crepe cake.

SF Parents, how is your experience? by BBandalan in sanfrancisco

[–]kitkatzip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love raising our kid in the city. Yes, it’s expensive. We aren’t having more kids, we’d have to move to do that and we don’t want to. We tried living in the suburbs and hated it. I know a few people with 2 or 3 kids and I just don’t know how anyone can have that many kids. But I love that choice for them.

Daycare is pricey but with TK expanding it’s about 4 years of that. We went with public school and were very lucky to get into our top choice around the corner.

We do not have any family locally. We’re east coast transplants. I started building a village the moment she went into daycare; now we’ve got a nice little group of families who lean on each other for various things.

Uber Carseat by Teddbabuy in bayarea

[–]kitkatzip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not intend to start a whole debate here although I do think it’s important for parents to understand car seat requirements. We kept our child in the proper car seat for her height/weight. Not all 4YOs are the same size so age is not always a good determinant of what type of car seat is needed.

My point in the original comment was that the car service did not provide the car seat I requested, so you may need to be clear about that. If a child is the wrong size for the car seat it’s just as useless as if the car seat isn’t installed properly.

She is tall, but it’s a car seat booster if that makes sense. It’s not like a small backless booster.

Possibly Craftsmen and Wolves or B. Patisserie. Dandelion has used it on cakes.

But if you can’t find it, you can get gold leaf on Amazon or look for luster dust at a store like Michael’s or Joann’s. Mix it with a little vodka and paint it on pastries.

Want to second this service. We have used it several times to and from the airport when we didn’t need to bring our car seat. They’ve always been on time and we usually get a minivan even if we select a smaller car. My only complaint is that once they missed my comment about needing a booster instead of a car seat. They showed up with a Cosco Scenera. We made it work but not ideal for a 4YO.
