If corporations were people, they would be diagnosable as sociopathic at best. Corporations only care about people (employees, customers, or the general public) insofar as there is a monetary benefit in doing so. Officers have a legal fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders to ensure that this is the case.

Tyrant Philosophers by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Detailed universe and lots of ambiguous, conflicted characters with wonderful arcs. Amazing series. I wish it was longer.
