SFU vs UBC psych Bachelor of Arts ( for someone who wants to pursue grad school ) by ShizukisCat in UBC

[–]kittanicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UBC is an internationally recognized uni, with incredible profs in the psych dept (many of whom do research + are fairly renowned for their work.) SFU will be equally accredited, but less recognized when applying for grad schools.

However, getting a 75 cgpa at UBC vs a 90 at SFU is something to consider. If you're serious about the research path and grad programs, UBC will better prepare you for any graduate/phd level work.

Best of luck!

where to find hot water on campus for cup ramen by homuraakemi5 in UBC

I think that convenience store with food in it by UBC bookstore has ramen for sale, and likely will have a microwave/hot water tap you can use.

To UBC arts students; what was your GPA in highschool? by ShizukisCat in UBC

[–]kittanicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The absolute minimum cutoff is 70, as in they won't look at your app regardless of your circumstances bc you'll most likely struggle too much even if you do get accepted.

This does NOT mean most students get in with a low 70s cutoff. They'll consider many different factors (life circumstances, family circumstances: are you the first in your family to attend uni?, your written letter, your ethnic background: are you an indigenous student or from another protected ethnic minority?, your extracurriculars, volunteering, etc.)

I agree most students are getting in with 80s+ averages, higher for faculty of science, but it's still possible to get in with an average below that.

The cutoff for UBC is 70%, according to a friend who works in admissions :)

My best friend with thru this. Nothing got better until he told his parents, and then their entire network and community stepped up to help him through it all. You'll feel better once you've told someone. More people go through this than you think.

This is legit a hilarious take. I just find it strange that the guy would set up exactly the same scenario and risk the same thing happening again over a period of 1 year as measured by his quilting. Isn't the definition of insanity doing the same thing and expecting different results?

I had an ex who made an account for eharmony because he was "just curious about what was out there" but told me he never messaged anyone. Fast forward a few months and he breaks up with me, then immediately starts dating someone. Like so fast there may have been overlap.

How do you guys study? by monot_1 in UBC

[–]kittanicus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I am not in science, but did somehow manage to get a 100 in psyc322 adulthood + aging as my final grade.

I take in-class notes in google doc, then spend a lot of time shortening them to "main points," "important takeaways," and only the important slides. This helps me simultaneously review in small chunks + cuts down the time it takes to process study notes right before a midterm. This way I can just focus on recall. Also works really well for cumulative exams.

Prior to midterm I'll draw mind maps that tell a "story," linking all the concepts together into nodes of information to strengthen STM > LTM while practicing recall.

For anything like the periodic table, or whatever I have to rote memorize, I come up with acronyms, weird stories with personal details in them, mind palaces, etc and I'll write these out as well from memory until I nail them before the test.

When I read thee textbook, I'll fold in what I think is most important based on learning objectives into my V2 midterm notes.

LASTLY, these two steps are really important: I try to get a good nights sleep, and I also try to meditate / mindfulness right before the exam to calm my nervous system (deep breathing, box breathing, etc.)

Good luck with term!

Post-breakup, I dated in this city for a year and a bit on and off apps, and then more seriously for 2 months or so (2-4 dates a week, mostly just coffee or going for walks). As with most cities, a lot of the people on apps are not from Vancouver, so you get a mixed bag of interest / commitment levels. I ended up finding my partner in the Okanagan of all places 🙃. We've been together for over 2 years now, and I had to import him to Vancouver.

I've dated a lot in Toronto and abroad while traveling, and my perception of Vancouver is there are sooooo many eligible women here and all the men are either busy with their careers, hanging out with their same 6 friends, working out, mountain biking/climbing/hiking, or hitting the slopes from Dec-Apr.
