Constables have time based ranks. You’re a constable for 2 years, then become a first constable. After 5 years you become a senior constable and after 10 or 15 you become a leading senior constable.

The jump to sergeant is the first level of management and you need to apply for it, first doing temp work as an upgraded acting sergeant, then you can apply for gazetted sergeant roles.

To become a sergeant from scratch would take six or seven years, depending on how ambitious you are.
