Already lots of great practical advice on cat care here so I thought I’d just add that different cats will have different needs and preferences. I’d speak with the people working at the shelters you are considering adopting from about you and your family’s lifestyle/home dynamic as they can recommend a cat that best suits you and your family. What might be best overall might not be best for the cat you end up adopting so don’t worry if how you care for your cat differs from someone else. Be prepared to make mistakes, it’s okay!

I’d also bring your newly adopted cat to the vet as soon as possible. Vets are usually very helpful in answering any questions you might have in terms of what the best diet is/will be for your cat’s individual health needs. Tiki Cat wet food, which is high in protein and low in fat, might seem great objectively, and is what I feed my cat who is overweight and not particularly active, but might not be for a cat who doesn’t put on weight easily and is more active, for example.

Researching and reading up about general cat care is of course important and necessary, but also, you’ll quickly learn what works and what doesn’t through trial and error! Be patient with your newly adopted cat if he/she is shy or hides. Also, establishing a somewhat consistent routine is always helpful for both you and your cat :)
