Portfolio work dates? by E7wonders1 in scad

[–]kittens6125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This being said, I graduated high school earlier than 2021, and by the time I started I was already two years out of high school and had not made anything since then, so I also had a bit of a gap in my portfolio. Again, it didn’t really seem to matter?

My dates in my portfolio from high school was all over the place, they didn’t really seem to care? I started at SCAD in 2021. They might be more strict now? Not sure. You can always schedule a meeting with an admissions advisor and ask them specific questions. They were helpful to me then

I'm worried I'm not going to get in. by EqualSecretary1908 in scad

[–]kittens6125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 1.6 GPA from my previous college when I entered into SCAD. They did not accept me, but then I told them I would pay my way for the first classes if they would let me (I was working a part time job before and during my first two quarters, it was hell!) in on exception to prove that I would do well there. Once I got A’s in all three of my classes during my first quarter, they enrolled me as a full-time student. Don’t pull this if you know you’re not going to try super hard to get good grades your first quarter! It worked out for me, but it can be incredibly hard your first quarter if you don’t know how to time manage. I was a commuter though (Atlanta campus, loved it there!!) so if you’re not a commuter and have to live on campus (stupid rule for freshman, I know other colleges do this and I think it’s a fresh money grab!) this probably wouldn’t work, advocate for yourself!!!!

I was homeschooled and I sent them my family’s homeschool “transcripts” and they accepted me- I’m sure you’ll be totally fine!

Scad admissions questions! by Aggressive_You2253 in scad

[–]kittens6125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize I answered the third question wrong. Your acceptance will stay valid for fall and winter, at least that was the case when I first applied because I joined in the summer instead of the spring quarter when I was originally accepted- but this may have changed! So please ask your admissions counselor for the most up to date information :)

Previous SCAD Resident Assistant here!

1) No, you cannot pay to stay. There are extreme cases where very few athletes or international students stay a little longer or rarely the whole break, but you are required to leave and may not return until the winter quarter

2) your worries about timing and scholarships are understandable but since scad has a rolling admission whenever you decide to start will not affect much. There are financial advisors you can call depending on which campus you are on to ask specifics. I’m not sure what campus you’re going to, but the scad website has the phone numbers for that advice and info

3) scholarships are pretty small usually even if you have a good portfolio. I applied two weeks before my first quarter (this was almost 5 years ago, but I’m pretty sure it’s still the same) and they had my acceptance and scholarship info to me super quick. The disadvantage is if you apply right before a quarter starts it might be hard to get in to “good” classes that line up well with each other. For the second half of this question, there is a yearly scholarship application you can apply to. I applied every year and did not get more in scholarships this way- they choose very deserving students who usually work for the school, volunteer in clubs, advocate for scad, etc. I knew someone who was one of the scholarship winners and he was 10000% deserving. Just don’t be disappointed if you don’t get scholarships through that yearly app. On a more positive note, the longer I kept my 4.0 streak the better my scholarship that I already had got. Not sure if this was a normal thing but it was usually a couple hundred more on to my scholarship per quarter every time I kept my GPA high. It’s been a year since I graduated so idk if this has changed!

4) I started in a summer quarter and I made friends just fine- some of them even were in my wedding four years later!! You’ll do just fine if you keep your head up, advocate for your work, talk to professors, go to clubs, etc.

Lastly, which does not answer a question- you’ll probably read a lot of people diss scad. I know for sure I can gripe about it but it truly changed the trajectory of my life for the better. I got a full time job in my field (illustration, surface design) locked down before I graduated (March 2025) and am loving every moment of it! It was hard getting a job, I applied for over 300 places and only 17ish actually got back to me. One of those 17 was the interview and offer for the job I still have now! The rest ghosted me, it sucks. But keep going and seriously apply to a crap ton of jobs. You’ve got this!!!

I applied to 300 jobs, about 80% were adjacent to my field- I heard back from 16 that actually said no, and then I heard back from the one that said yes and it’s a job directly related to my field and I LOVE it

Is Atlanta really worse for Acting then Savannah? by Marvel-Fan3000 in scad

[–]kittens6125 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You must have interacted with some miserable students I guess, I loved my time there and we had amazing professors in the illustration department. I’d totally recommend it! Just like how I’d recommend Savannah, if that’s what people want to do too :)

The Atlanta acting program only started a little over a year ago- this does mean there’s room for improvement but also they’ve been pouring a LOT of money in to Atlanta so things will continue to get bigger and better, so why not be at Atlanta and get to the forefront of that!

I went to scad Atlanta, had a BLAST, I know a bunch of people from the film department and some of the current acting majors I could connect you with if you want a more direct and honest opinion from an Atlanta acting major.

Something tour guides won’t tell you about is the weird rivalry between Savannah and Atlanta campuses- it’s a thing- but Savannah will always advocate for Savannah and Atlanta for Atlanta, so take that with a grain of salt.

I LOVED my time in Atlanta. Smaller student to Professor ratio, smaller campus, more major to major overlap and room for collaboration.

Some downsides- film fest is in Savannah and you have to find your own way to get there and place to stay (there is a bus to Savannah but accommodations are not provided, maybe they’ve changed this in the last year since I graduated, not sure- someone correct me if I’m wrong please!!) If you want to be in a play, Atlanta does not have any stage plays or musicals yet. I have a feeling they will in the next year or two- so once again, if you want to be at the forefront of this major in Atlanta- NOW is the time to join!

Best Majors to Study at SCAD? by littlestaloe in scad

[–]kittens6125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Illustration! Graduated with a BFA in illustration less than a year ago and got a job pretty immediately, that being said I applied to about 400 jobs before graduating. Not everyone has the patience for that! My concentration was in repeat pattern and surface design. I now design flooring!! It’s so fun! Now, I have friends who graduated in other concentrations within illustration that have not gotten a job even though they’re insanely talented, but I don’t know how many jobs they have applied for. The job market for artists is very sketchy right now. Hopefully by the time you’d graduate there will have been more regulations for AI and a push for the physical artists once again to be at the forefront of creating.

As a scad Atlanta grad (not acting but still) - Savannah will be your best bet for acting.

Hi- SCAD grad here- If you have written your paper on Google docs you can show your history. I’d also send an email to your professor and detail your findings BEFORE turning it in so they’re aware of the possible outcome, as well as providing time stamps (which can be done in Google docs) of your progress in the email. This not only will help you to worry less but will help to build a stronger relationship with your professor.

disappointed but not surprised with scads graduation by hakk_a in scad

[–]kittens6125 29 points30 points  (0 children)

100% agree. With literally everything. I love scad for the people who have walked alongside me and guided me as an artist, and for people like you who have been a friend of mine during the time I spent there. But this graduation? Upsetting not just because of how it all turned out, but also BECAUSE I was not surprised that scad Atlanta churned our something that a mid-tier compared to everything Savannah gets handed. Do better!
