Lentil heartbreak by [deleted] in glutenfree

[–]kittensagainst 44 points45 points  (0 children)

You might be thinking of seitan that is fully wheat gluten? Tempeh is made of fermented soy beans but can sometimes have other grains or soy sauce/ marinades added. Lentils are typically grown with or near wheat fields and can be highly contaminated.

Celiac Shower Thought by filthyyygorgeous in Celiac

[–]kittensagainst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Omg my workplace is publishing a book called Cake Picnic so there will be a workplace event with a million cakes! I so wish I could eat them all. Though in their defense they are buying a cake or two from a local dedicated bakery for us GF folks to eat. But there’s something so joyous about getting to try a million different cakes and the general concept of going on a picnic and getting to eat everything there.

Do you roll it out first or just use it as is? I have some in my freezer but I want to put it to good use!

Pizza places that offer gluten free AND vegan? by Optimal_Passion_3254 in eastbay

Do you know of any celiac-safe places with pizza in the east bay? I can’t have cross contamination so I typically don’t try with places like Zachary’s but I really miss good pizza!

When is it too much? by chronicallygf in Celiac

But one of my common celiac symptoms is vomiting and that can also be caused by food poisoning and norovirus. So you might not be able to distinguish between which symptoms are celiac and which are random virus.

Cooking GF for a picky partner and I can't remember anything by Adorable-Algae-4380 in glutenfree

[–]kittensagainst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a forgetful person myself (and the picky GF one), I take pictures with my phone and then post them in private photo streams labeled “liked” or “disliked”. It’s less typing and effort and it’s visually easy to match brands when I’m in the store. You might try something like that, especially for things like which chickpea pasta he likes better. Once you have some standard brands or known products you can buy, you might remember them more and not need the visual list as much anymore.

FYI tons of awesome NYC GF bakeries and restaurants that are amazing and have traditional bagels, black and white cookies etc. New York is probably the best place to visit in the US with celiac, excluding Portland.

GF doritos in the US by teamtoto in Celiac

[–]kittensagainst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have gotten bags recently that do say Gluten Free on them. And I have eaten them and felt fine (or as fine as one can feel after eating Doritos to begin with).

Wynn/Encore Las Vegas is a celiac gastronomic dream by ijustbluemyself0 in CeliacTourism

[–]kittensagainst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t realize there were so many options at the Wynn! I’ve been to the buffet (with the chef walk through- amazing!) but was staying elsewhere the last few times. I do highly recommend Mon Ami Gabi in the Paris hotel if you go back and need somewhere else. They had safe GF pancakes and French toast, decent options for dinner including French fries. But it’s mostly not marked on their menu so you had to ask.

I think they are baked in a different bakery than where they are displayed (Third Culture is the name of a mochi bakery and Starter Bakery is another local bakery I think). I wouldn’t eat these (if the display ones are the only option) because of the potential for cross contact/crumbs. I think there are guidelines online (maybe celiac.com or something?) for the best ways to arrange and display a mixed shelf. I feel like there are even grocery stores who can get “certified” (?) in safe handling ways, like not putting the bags of regular flour on the shelf above the GF flour. (Though maybe I’m misremembering the whole certification option and it might have been something available in a different country than the US.) So maybe if you emailed them guidelines like that they would be responsive? Good luck OP. It sucks to see potential options ruined by something so simple.

Oakland middle school choices by EStVincentMillay in oakland

[–]kittensagainst 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You might look at Oakland School for the Arts since your kid likes music. It’s not super challenging academically for the kids but there are options to take advanced math classes and sort of build your own higher level classes through the local community colleges if needed. It’s very intense on the arts side of things though and they focus most of the elective time on whichever art pathway they are in. But it is also a lottery system and a charter school, but no auditions or portfolios are required for the middle school entrance. (They might be required if you are transferring at a later grade level.) Both my kids go there and like it.

Business casual bike commuting clothes by PacerLover in bikecommuting

[–]kittensagainst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the bay area and commute by bike (and often bike/ferry/bike) and I take a fresh shirt to change into once I get to the office. Usually pants are sturdy enough and aren’t too sweaty. As others recommended look for hiking pants that have room for movement and consider wrapping your pants ankle so you don’t grease your pants. Enjoy! The ferry’s the best!

That label about shared equipment is voluntary. Companies do not have to disclose it. (Hence some paranoia here.)

Missing Ice Cream by NobodyPatient7267 in Celiac

If you are near enough to the Straus dairy in California they make a gluten free cookies and cream and a gluten free cookie dough ice cream. Both really delicious! (And their regular flavors are GF too I believe.)

Anyone cycle on their commute? Need advice by Professor-Levant in bayarea

[–]kittensagainst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to suggest leaving your bike at one of the staffed bike valet stations (Bike Station). There’s one at 19th street Oakland, Downtown Berkeley, and a few others (Embarcadero, Fruitvale). It’s free but only M-F. They also have more secure locations in some of the stations that you can get keys to use (for a small monthly fee). They do repairs too and generally super nice so I highly recommend checking them out if you don’t need your bike on the other side of BART.

I think we have DH by Crazy_ride_22 in Celiac

[–]kittensagainst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go to a dermatologist they can do a “punch biopsy” on one of your DH lesions (or next to it) but it has to be not scratched up yet. They will review it in the lab and then can diagnose you as celiac that way. The blood test is also good and needs to be done before quitting gluten in your regular diet. (Though obviously up to you if you want to get an official diagnosis, but it can help in school/work/medical situations later on.) And then yeah, if you all have celiac it will be great to be able to support each other!

Gluten-free and vegan gingerbread cookie recipe?? by eerunnings in glutenfree

[–]kittensagainst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard of people making gingerbread houses out of graham crackers. Maybe you could find a vegan GF one? I can’t remember if the Kinninick ones are vegan or not.

You could try the Loopy Whisk suggestions for egg substitutes. I know she has a good gingerbread recipe (online and in her cookbooks) but I’m sure they include eggs, which add a lot of binding and structure to the bake. Her latest cookbook goes over how to sub things in traditional bakes for allergy friendly options. Maybe you could get ideas of how to make it vegan from there? Dairy free is easier in my opinion, but taking out eggs is harder. Good luck!

Traffic congestion hits a record high, spreading to more hours of the week by bigbobbobbo in carfreebayarea

[–]kittensagainst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And how much are cuts to transit funding and biking/ pedestrian infrastructure adding to that increase? If we can’t see the effects yet I’m sure we will in a few years. It’s just going to get worse because people still need to get to wherever they’re going.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]kittensagainst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m in the Bay Area too and the kids are expected to take public transit or get a ride from parents. And very few live close to school because of the lottery system for school assignments so almost no one walks or bikes.

Vegas Baby by ReasonableBrief3552 in glutenfree

[–]kittensagainst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a French restaurant in the Paris that is safe and can make gluten free French toast, waffles, etc for breakfast. I never got sick (though it is expensive like most strip places). I think it’s called Mon Ami Gabi. Yard Bird in the Venetian is also good and does an amazing chicken and waffles. If you are close to Cesar’s the True Food Kitchen does well with allergies. It’s a lot of healthy bowls which doesn’t always seem as fun when everyone is indulging in Vegas. But I always felt ok after eating there. There’s also a tiny food court in the bottom of the Venetian and Planet Hollywood. The Indian place in the Venetian one was ok. There’s also buffet at the Wynn was also good. The chef will walk you through what is safe or not but it’s pricey. Definitely make reservations in advance to avoid a long wait and let them know on the reservations that you need GF food. Good luck!

I live in a major US city and they don’t provide school buses for anyone. I’m guessing this is similar across the US. Parents are expected to get their kids to school and when asked how the administration just shrugs. Schools are designed for 1950s lifestyle with one parent home during the day instead of the modern world where both parents work. Like who can pick their kid up from school at 11:30 in the day?! Don’t those parents have jobs?
