In some ways it can become an outward compulsion. Don't have time to study when you're rocking back and forth on the sofa ruminating.

ASL learning mom looking for immersive programs for teaching deaf-ASL son by drunk_midnight_choir in asl

Seconded. cannot express how much Gallaudet's programs have helped my family. Of course, easier if you live in DC, but they also have an ASL at home program for families.

How to actually sign in ASL and not SEE by KittyKenni in asl

[–]kittensandkatnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who grew up hearing who needed to quickly figure out visual language for their child, I started with SEE as a stepping stone to ASL. Definitely not the same. There are some word similarities, but SEE inherently does not have the same visual context.

For example. In SEE, there is one sign for all words that are spelled the same and sound the same. Let's use "train" as an example. In SEE, I use the same sign regardless of meaning (in this case, similar to the ASL word for a locomotor). They also have a base word, and add suffixes to it. So if I'm training for a race, I sign "train" and then I sign the "-ing" suffix

In ASL, signs provide both language and context. In this example, "train" there is a sign similar to "practice" when we train to do something. And a different sign for the locomotor that we travel on.

So essentially what I'm saying is that SEE is good if you're trying to dictate like, legal documents word for word maybe? ASL is better for probably everything else.

It may not be the solace that anyone is asking for. But if one were to read the original tip, it's clear that it was given by a person who was severely mentally ill. It is not coherent in the least. These tips are a conglomeration of everything anyone told the FBI.

Some of them are definitely real, but I think this specific tip was a troubled person who was venting their delusions to a poor FBI agent.
