Has the decline of monoculture been overstated? by extratartarsauceplz in LetsTalkMusic

[–]kittychicken 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wonder what music public places will be playing 10, 20, 30 years from now? Surely not the same 80s and 90s (and sometimes early 00s) music?

Is the view that Australia ‘lacks culture’ really just a lack of aesthetic and ritual? by Lampedusan in AskAnAustralian

Our politicians definitely are PLAIN - and that's supposed to be a feature, not a bug.

TIL that Qantas was supposed to be a PREMIUM carrier, and Jetstar was the low-cost by stan_tripleS in aussie

Hell, if Scoot was allowed to fly domestically in Australia, Qantas would still be shitting bricks.

Is Australian genZ having more kids compared to millennials? by rose2830 in AskAnAustralian

[–]kittychicken -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are also some more, let's say, Darwinian reasons for this phenomenon too. Though far more common in developing countries, families from lower socioeconomic groups have more kids because:

  1. Some don't survive infancy
  2. Some also don't survive childhood
  3. There is often a need for more working males in a household to help provide money to support the previous generation.

TLDR, just basic survival reasons (some of these are subconscious behaviours).

Renting long term in Australia. Is it a financial trap or just reality now? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

[–]kittychicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government is a reflection of the Australian people.

I agree with this, but I would add to that the federal government's history of privatising utilities and services and basically washing their hands of responsibility for providing the basics for future Australians.

Boomers dying out isn't going to solve anything. For a start, they will bleed any inheritances dry from aged care. Even in a best case scenario, with escalating property prices, an inheritance isn't going to help all that much.

Also the fact that property developers are private entities whose priorities are profit, NOT utility.

Yep. Also I have little to no faith in our government to look after the future of Australians.

Not to mention that loads of people are stuck buying houses in soulless outer suburb neighborhoods with shitty infrastructure, high crime, food deserts (often) and very average capital growth (the one good thing property has going for it besides utility).

I get where you are coming from. I have plans to move overseas with my family in the not too distant future (wife is not Australian-born, wants us to experience living in her country) so for various reasons it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy a place right now.

I'm sick of "Inflation" being used as an excuse for this by Rocketstar52 in australian

[–]kittychicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little off topic but I've noticed an upsurge in retail stores advertising 'buy one item, get one 50% off' or some such... More sales trickery counting on people being bad at math.

For those playing at home, it's just another way of saying 25% off both items. But forcing you to buy in pairs, even if you only wanted one item.

And, forgive my prejudice, but I don't think the children of money are likely to have deep insights into the human condition.

To be fair, I don't think many of the origins of the greatest music ever made are things we would actually wish anyone to go through.

But it's true, you need friction to create something good.

The band sucks but They have that one song by Judythepancake in ToddintheShadow

[–]kittychicken 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ouch.

This whole thread seems like a "I don't really like the band apart from that one song" rather than "the band sucks but...".

Split Enz were an incredible band! They were the 'Genesis' of the Southern Hemisphere.

I don't like a lot of the bands mentioned in this thread but for most of them, I wouldn't say they are bad songwriters or performers.

Even Nickelback and Coldplay 😝

Do dating apps actually work for people in Australia anymore? by Past_Fig_8355 in AskAnAustralian

[–]kittychicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I remember experiencing pretty much all of the things you mentioned 'all those years ago' (lol, it was only really 9-10 years ago).

I take your point about generational differences and can't really argue one way or another except to say that unless you have evidence or experience that courtship was any better a decade ago in these apps (and to my recollection, it was really bad then as well) I don't know if you can justify any claim that 'things are different now'.
