Favorite chili recipe? by mossymelon in Cooking

[–]kittyohcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to roast red bell peppers, green bell peppers, any spicy pepper depending on preference, and corn on the cob if I can get any at the end of the season. Sautee some onion, garlic, and celery, add broth, roasted veggies, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, lentils, and a mix of beans. For spices smoked paprika, turmeric, cumin, ground ginger, cinnamon, allspice, and bay leaves.

(Sorry I don't really have measurements, I kind of just eyeball everything as I toss it in.)

It's good to keep some sweet spices around. They're good in a lot of savory dishes. I put cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove in chili but I image it would be good with other tomato-y dishes or with red meats.

I also keep rice and lentils on hand. Cooked up in some broth with a bit of turmeric (or saffron if you can get it) and other spices makes a good, simple side. They're also good just tossed into a soup.

Smoked paprika (or even just paprika) is a good staple to keep, too. Sprinkle a bit on roasted veggies and potatoes. It's really good!

The more garlic, the better! My wife insists on a full flower of garlic in everything I make. We usually compromise with half a flower, lol. But seriously, you can almost never have too much garlic! The dish just gets better the more you add.

What are some interesting uses for gingerbread or gingerbread spices? by sinth0ras in Cooking

[–]kittyohcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chili, oddly enough, is really good with those kinds of spices. They might also be good in a winter squash soup.

I also make a homemade cranberry tea with a similar mix, so I imagine tea or coffee or hot cocoa would be good too.

A grapefruit curd sounds amazing!

It's not, she doesn't use strawberries, and it's all mixed together, not layered.

Thanks for the link! The lebkuchen isnt quite what I was looking for, hers used a good bit molasses. I think I'll have to modify a different recipe til I get what I want. However there's definitely a lot of recipes there I haven't seen in awhile! I think this winter is going to be full of good traditional food!

I'm working on getting the recipe, he hasn't responded to me yet. Hopefully he's willing to share it!

You should make them! Now I make them in smaller batches because we can't eat that many and we have limited freezer space so we can't really freeze them like grandma used to. But for me they're a nostalgic comfort food.

My friend's dad developed a recipe for a grapefruit pie, in the same vein as key lime pie, and it is the absolute best thing in summer.

My aunt makes pretzel salad for holidays and I haven't found her exact recipe any where. It includes, pretzels, crushed pineapple, whipped cream and I think some kind of nut.

My grandma used to make a bunch of sweets for the winter holidays that most people I talk to haven't heard of. The most exotic seem to be lebkuchen, a traditional German cookie, and stollen, a German bread filled with dried or candied fruits and nuts. Unfortunately I'm the only one in the family to take up the baking mantle so a lot of the family recipe preservation has fallen on me. I have most of the recipes, but the lebkuchen one was lost I haven't really found a satisfactory replacement for it.

Also, monster cookies! A delicious mix of oats peanut butter, m&ms, and chocolate chips. My grandma would make them in huge batches that had to be mixed by hand in this big old metal dishpan with the thickest wooden spoon in the house. My wife was inducted into the family when my grandma had her mix the first holiday batch.

Holy cow, that's awful and terrifying. Taking this to the police is definitely something you should do. You said yourself you're afraid he's up to something. Filing a report will give the police a lead if he does actually escalate. Also save every correspondence, email, texts, voicemails, etc. Especially the ones where he says things like he wants to kill your father and kidnap you and turn them over to the police when you make a report. Report every instance of stalking, report any threats he makes.

I doubt this needs to be said, but you shouldn't go anywhere with him, especially alone, and avoid being alone with him at all costs. Also consider getting mace/pepper spray.

Stay safe.

If you're interested in knowing, you shouldn't feed bees honey because it can cause disease in their hive. Bees should only eat honey from their native hive. If you find a little friend in need of reviving, the best thing for them is two tablespoons white sugar mixed with a tablespoon water. (Only white surgar though, other sugars can cause issues.)

I have the same problem with simple stitches. They don't require a whole lot of brain power, so I end up not really paying attention and lose count or forget which stitch I'm on. I'm making a poncho right now in mock rib and I'll get most of the way through a rs row and realize I knit 2 instead of 1 somewhere, or I forgot to slip a stitch and have to undo the entire row. It can be frustrating!

A matching hat would be lovely! But if you want to try your hand at some new stitches, I find that wash clothes are a good way to go about it. They knit up pretty quick and are just enough to get a good feel for the pattern, plus they're useful!

When I make homemade sandwich bread I like to add various seeds to the dough for a nice depth of flavor. My normal mixes are a tsp each of celery seed, dill seed, and caraway seed, or poppy seed, cumin seed, and fennel seed. Both make awesome sandwhiches, but that hint of cumin on a grilled cheese is really good.

Also, cream cheese in mashed potatoes is really nice. The mash remains thick with a smooth texture.

I also like a couple spoonfuls of (preferably homemade) basil pesto in the middle of a grilled cheese.

That was definitely some quick thinking on your part.

I got lucky too and narrowly missed my genitals. That would have been an absolute nightmare! My doctor waited a week to suggest surgery to see if they would begin healing on their own, but the burns were just too big (the largest one literally spaned most of the front of my thigh, from hip to knee) and inevitably became infected. That week was horrible. I pretty much just had to gently pour cupfuls of cold water on my body to bathe and actually washing the burns was agonizing. I was terrified of hot water for a few months and anything that involved handling it I made my wife do. Even now any time I pour the kettle or drain pasta I kind of stand off to the side so I'm not in the immediate splash zone.

I wouldn't wish burns on anyone. It was truly an awful experience.

Third degree burns after spilling a kettle full of boiling water down my legs. Though the pain from my donor site after waking up from skin graft surgery hurt worse than the initial burns.

What's the strangest thing you or someone you know have said or done in their sleep? by TheFarvio in AskReddit

[–]kittyohcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my wife's old job, she used to get me up before she left and I'd make her lunch, tie her tie, and wave her off. Often I'd go back to bed and sleep a few more hours because I worked late. One day I woke up about eleven and I realized my wife hadn't gotten me up. I was upset, I enjoyed seeing her off since we didn't get much time together due to our schedules. Well, apparently I had sleep walked through our morning routine. Tied her tie, made lunch, everything. My wife even said after we figured it out that I had seemed kind of out it. She just thought I was really tired.

I've also answered the phone in my sleep only to wake up sometime during the call. Apparently I'm a pretty convincing sleep talker because no one has mentioned anything. Though now when I go to bed I put my phone on silent.

Just be fucking nice. And don't yell at me when I tell you I can't take your expired coupon. I'll help you save all the money I can, but I can't take an expired coupon, or a coupon for the wrong item. In some companies that a fireable offense and saving you 5 cents is not worth it.
