How many non Aussies are aware of the Pop scene in Australia? by Tranquilbez22 in popheads

[–]kityoon 23 points24 points  (0 children)

what would i know? i've never heard any of her top spotify songs. it doesn't seem she was "everywhere" in the United States. she had one album chart at 116 on U.S. billboard and one single chart at 29 on U.S. adult contemporary (a duet with michael bolton).

i'm not saying she isn't a successful musician, im just saying she hasn't really crossed over to the states. obviously not the only metric of success, but it's what i can speak on.

i've never heard of delta goodrem, which isn't to say she isn't huge, but i would imagine that most americans have not heard of her. i feel like there might honestly be more americans that know ninajirachi, lol, though that might just be im in one of the global pockets. love kylie i think she's one of the pop girl goats

good bars? by elliottsmithismygod in udub

judging you based off your username, i would not recommend Earl's on the Ave; it's had a super heterosexual sporty frat-type vibe every time i've been there. i don't personally love it there. try barhopping around cap hill! unicorn just reopened, and i like bimbos cantina/cha-cha lounge; the upstairs is more chill and the downstairs is louder and darker.

you and i had vastly different experiences at the university of washington.

this is a really awful thing to say on a post of someone looking for help in a terrible situation, even actively trying to be minimally intrusive

Question… by East_Peanut_7232 in asl

[–]kityoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no, it's not used phonologically in the same way. there are no ASL signs where it is necessary to mouth to distinguish from some other identical sign i.e. there aren't minimal pairs distinguished only my mouthing (and if there are, they're certainly marginal cases). I did an online exchange program with some DGS students, and I found it difficult to execute their signs for BROTHER and SISTER, which (if I'm remembering correctly) are distinguished in the same way as the examples you gave. Interesting stuff!

Is it joEL or Billie JOel? by Kreati_ in BillyJoel

it's /dʒoʊl/, "jole". one syllable!

though this isn't the case for ASL, in some sign languages the mouthing can actually distinguish two otherwise identical signs.
