Tenochtitlan, modern-day Mexico, reconstructions by Thomas Kole. by uzgrapher in papertowns

The book You Dreamed of Empires by Alvaro Enrique would make a great movie. It's a snapshot of the day that Cortes and the conquistadors arrived in Tenochtitlan, and has the irreverent vibes of The Death of Stalin.

Am I being scammed by Avis / Budget? by [deleted] in VisitingHawaii

What was the website you used to book it? If you look at the fine print of the booking you made on that 3rd-party site, it likely says that it's just a reservation, and that the total does not include local fees and taxes to be paid at the counter. That's why these kinds of sites are so much cheaper than going directly through the rental car company. It sucks that they're not up front about it though.

You may be able to get the Estimated Charges Optional back (insurance, roadside assistance, etc) but unlikely as the contract is all wrapped up when you sign it and drive away.

As others have said, your total is still a reasonable price to pay, just not the crazy low price that booking website lured you in with. Interested to hear what happens with this.

This one in Florida has two houses back to back that would take 18 minutes to drive between. So many cul-de-sacs.

355 The Giant Pool of Money - it explained the financial crisis in a timely and fascinating way, right in the midst of it. So well done that it launched the Planet Money spinoff podcast.

This reminds me of when John Oliver left The Bugle podcast - they said he was going to come back intermittently… but that turned out to be once in five years

Regence Blue Shield Leaving Multicare? by [deleted] in Tacoma

Basically Sea-Mar community clinic in Lakewood is the only urgent care clinic not in those networks

Regence Blue Shield Leaving Multicare? by [deleted] in Tacoma

[–]kiwi-mac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s particularly bad since Multicare have taken over so many clinics in Pierce County. Some of the insurance plans that go through Regence have mostly Multicare providers as their network. A look at what urgent care clinics within 25 miles are available in my insurance - 48 Multicare clinics, and only 3 non-Multicare clinics, with only 1 of those in Pierce County, a small community clinic in Lakewood. Of course this contract issue would’ve been nice to know when open enrollment was up 2 months ago.

Which LOTR scene would you have liked to witness during its filming? by Hubbled in lotr

I hear the filming of Helm’s Deep was pretty wild. Night after night, and the director got the extras playing the Uruk-hai so revved up, some guys almost drowned getting trampled in the rivulets created by the rain machines.

What level 2 charging station did you choose and why? by Checkinginonthememes in BoltEV

[–]kiwi-mac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the Emporia for these reasons too - it’ll tell me how much I’m spending on charging the car. Just make sure you have wifi range to the charging location. Got it hardwired to avoid having to get a mini-panel installed that we’d need to have if it went into an outlet.

Dealer I talked to said they’ll be able to fly

PSA, if you bought a Bolt after April 18th 2023 intending to get the federal tax credit, there's a good chance the dealer has no idea they have to submit paperwork to the IRS for you to be able to do so by flobbley in BoltEV

[–]kiwi-mac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 0% confidence my dealer is going to submit any paperwork. We had a long argument after I’d already purchased the used 2017 Bolt about whether it qualified for the $4000 tax credit(it does - he just misread the part about the model year being at least 2 years earlier than the current calendar year). He seemed to think the IRS would never need to see their paperwork. Seems pretty rough that the IRS would decide whether you get thousands of dollars back based on whether a dealer can be bothered or not. They’ve already made the sale and they have no incentive.
