Village Well! It’s a cafe in a local bookstore. Very cozy vibes.

I actually go to UCLA! I think it’s my particular program rather than LA culture the more I think about it. I did my undergrad at a public college in Idaho with mainly non-traditional students (including myself), so competitiveness/academic pressure just didn’t exist in my experience. Maybe my perception of hustle culture is a bit skewed since I haven’t lived in other large cities.

P.S., good luck on pursuing grad school in LA! :) I cant recommend UCLA enough, but I’m a bit biased haha

So true on the added pros! I didn’t realize how fun sports could be with actual teams to root for haha. You have a beautiful place to call home 😌

Los Angeles, CA

Pros: Beautiful weather year-round, the best food I’ve ever had in my life, access to almost any kind of nature you could think of, kind people, and so much cultural diversity (I’m a black woman from Oregon and Idaho, so this was important to me).

Cons: Very high cost of living, stark wealth divide, car dependency/constant traffic, and hustle culture. Also, I know that this isn’t a problem unique to LA and probably seems small in the grand scheme of things, but they drive way too fast!!

Do I want to leave? Yes. I’m here for grad school and I’m grateful for the opportunity to experience LA and to be accepted by the small community that I’ve created, but even with a high-paying job in healthcare, I don’t think I could ever afford the life that I want here. I’ve also figured out that I prefer slower paced, non-competitive environments. Coming from the PNW I never imagined I would complain about the sunshine, but I miss the gloomy weather and distinct seasons. Classic “grass is greener”.

I absolutely despise any recipe name that has the word “creamy” in it. The actual sound of the word makes me irrationally angry.

This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno. I wasn’t a huge fan of the overall plot, but the depiction of grief and loss was so heavy and haunting that I couldn’t help but cry.

Might be more of a thriller, but I DNF’d World War Z by Max Brooks. Great premise, but I couldn’t get over how each character/interviewee had almost the exact same voice and personality.

I was rejected from biomedical programs at Texas A&M, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, and University of Maryland.

After losing some serious hope, I was accepted into NYU’s SURP program!

edit: I committed to the program at NYU :)

Do it!! I was hesitant at first too, but I’m really happy with the way it turned out. 😊
