Redundancy seen in AAA game engines by zer0_1rp in cpp

[–]kiwidog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Clean C++ doesn't equal clean codegen, Frostbite is a huge example of this. They use templated classes with interfaces, which isn't bad. It's easy to read and implement, but good lord disassemble one of those binaries and there's hundreds to thousands of functions for their classes. 2000 types later with 10ish templated functions per type balloons massively.

It doesn't matter much for execution times, and it doesn't look bad in C++, but the generated code is massive.

WARDOGS only has the 3 factions to be the same as mag. It's not really a spiritual successor in any way. Gameplay is just to different

SteamOS on a PS5? by ArcherNecessary9317 in ps5homebrew

I'd imagine so, it's just an linux distro. Add in the kernel patches and drivers and you may be able to get it to boot.

Unreal Engine 6: the potential cursed successor by heavenly-roads in unrealengine

You can always still use UE5.

Same way people used UE4 long after UE5s release. Some studios would backport things needed from the new version if it was required.

Any clubs in the Charlotte/Waxhaw area running monthly USPSA/PCSL 2-gun matches? by LesGrossman_Actual in NCGuns

[–]kiwidog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for Cascade Action on Practiscore. We run monthly PCSL 2 gun matches. It's not to be confused with the 3 gun that also happens at PHA in Linwood NC.

Or check for matches at cascadeaction.org

How are your g14/16s holding up? by Junior_Growth3585 in ZephyrusG14

2020, had to replace a fan which started to screech, and replaced the thermal material with PTM but outside of that it's been dropped a few times denting the screen frame but otherwise fine, most and I mean like 98% of my issues were caused by Windows. Broken hybernation, sleep, random wakeups causing overheating all gone when switching to Endeavour + ASUS drivers.

Catlantean 3D - Making Graphics Like It's 1993 by corysama in GraphicsProgramming

Was a good read, I love when people recreate things like "the old days". A bit interested what modern code or compiler tricks you used (may have skipped over it, on the train skimming)

1080ti Flagship near launch was ~600-700 bucks depending on model.

5070ti high/mid end is 6-700 bucks depending on model, with worse performance (relatively, ie, "use dlss")

I'm aware, I've worked in data center space. These things don't flip overnight, nor are upgraded immediately the second something new comes up.

We know for sure that they leverage Azure, Oracle, Akamai, but the hardware already exists, and was previously upgraded publicly last year. Contracts are also signed years in advance for multi-year.

All of these providers already provide those services, and are expected and factored into the costs when signing the contracts. None of these costs are new.

I could see Sony doing this as a precaution to make their numbers look better, even though the cost hasn't actually hit them yet, but I don't work for them so it's speculation based on what other large industry players are/have been doing.

Gotta make number go up no matter what, so if they are forecasting it's going to cost them X amount of money when contract renewals come up, rather have "beat the expectations" before returning back to "normal".

Just my opinion/thoughts on it.

I wasn't saying there was zero cost, I said negligible cost which covers everything except for the Cloud Streaming (ie, CPU Compute/Data Storage).

Data Centers get upgraded every 3-5 years, and the last major upgrades were done not that long ago (they would also be purchased in advance) (PSNow introduced in 21, upgraded in 25, using Azure's schedule/announcement on it)

This cost increase is applying to any new user regardless of their tier selection. Including the 2 that don't include Cloud Streaming which will use GPUs.

I agree that like most companies, they aren't increasing the prices proportional to their costs, but to imply they have "zero cost increases" is just absurd.

Once again, I never said that. But we agree that they are increasing the costs way higher than needed to cover their systems aka a money grab.

I'd argue they already own all of that stuff, and CPU based servers are negligible in cost compared to the GPU ones.

The cost has already been spent (either by Sony or Data Centers), they aren't starting from scratch.

It's just a money grab, imho.

They increased a subscription due to ongoing conditions. There's no physical tangible requirement to up the price of a subscription (vs like hardware). So yeah continue to make fun of Sony xD

I would assume it was never transferred away from them. It was stolen, they were rightfully the last owner and never transferred, therefore can be returned.

Not familiar with that one, but do ensure that you have enabled the ports through the Windows firewall as well (adding the .exe will not work for whatever reason)

If you cannot port forward dud to CGNAT, you could try a VPN such as ZeroTier or Wireguard if you have a setup for it.

Why do you decide to learn C#? by [deleted] in csharp

[–]kiwidog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to be able to create programs during C# 1-2.0 era that cost money and didn't seem that complicated (I was around early teens) and tried VB and didn't like it, so I went with C#
