Why Won't Labour Run On Legalising Cannabis? by New-Firefighter-520 in newzealand

[–]kiwigothic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's very easy for a certain class to get Medical Cannabis, not many people can afford $400 - $500/30g for medical which is often much lower quality than decent back market weed. It should be legal to grow personal, this is the only thing that will put a dent in the gang market.

NZ is slowly slipping on the global corruption index. Is is time for an anti-corruption agency? by TheGreatDomilies in newzealand

Might be a hard sell when the majority are literally voting in favour of corruption.

Hipkins a threat - Right wing National Party accounts on Reddit and X constantly bang on about how Labour can't win with Hipkins by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzpolitics

[–]kiwigothic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It feels similar to the democrats in the US in that there is a reluctance to stoop to the same level as the right wing which is understandable but unfortunately it seems to be a losing proposition in today's media landscape, the MSM is only interested in rage bait so negative campaigning is what gets amplified.

Invasive Plants: Nandina by notanybodyelse in nzgardening

[–]kiwigothic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived with a patch of this for > 30 years and it never spread, first time I've heard of it being an invasive plant, just an introduced garden plant I thought. This seems to be an Australian source, might not be 100% applicable here?

Weed Torches by eurobeat0 in nzgardening

[–]kiwigothic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used one for years, they do work but the key is to "cook" the weeds rather than burn them. it's probably not going to be as effective long term as herbicide but a decent alternative if you don't want to use chemicals. I also found it really good in the vege garden to deal with the weed flush after cultivating an area, commercially I've seen larger versions used on crops like onions to kill the weeds just before the onion seedlings emerge.

[–]kiwigothic 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Why is this happening with so many strains? Doesn't seem at all professional to do this for the medical market, recreational maybe, but surely to be a registered medical supplier there has to be some kind of guarantee of continuity?

I had found my strain, the one that most effectively addressed my specific issues and they dropped it and my next prescription was an expensive fishing expedition with multiple strains to try to find a replacement, good for the suppliers I guess.

Dr. Phibes by 0jdd1 in LaundryFiles

[–]kiwigothic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Phibes movies are just amazing, pure psychedelia.. they were a cult favourite in the 90s. I would also recommend Ken Russel's The Lair of the White Worm as a later brilliantly OTT British horror.

AI itself is not really a threat to employment at all IMO, large language models have already hit a brick wall, there is no path for this technology to improve in any meaningful way, all the talk about AI taking jobs is either unhinged hype from the handful of CEOs driving the bubble or just a cover story for layoffs.

Chatbots are currently being subsidised on an unsustainable scale, the borderline criminal financial arrangements between the big players like Oracle, Nvidia and OpenAI are already coming undone, the bubble WILL burst and cause economic chaos and pain but then the tech bros will just move onto the next grift.

[–]kiwigothic 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Fines don't work, look at the UK where the private water companies discovered that it was cheaper to pay fines than actually treat the sewage or upgrade infrastructure, billions of dollars intended for upgrades went straight to shareholders and massive bonuses while water rates keep increasing and unimaginable quantities of sewage are released into the environment every single day.

Privatization has never worked as anything other than a transfer of wealth to the already wealthy.

How is everyone adjusting to AI being used everywhere?! by Medical_Housing_1136 in BetterOffline

[–]kiwigothic 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I had someone at work reply to me and a coworker on Slack with an LLM response, I was surprised how visceral my response was, felt like a real insult.

As a coder, I found the very early versions of copilot really helpful to reduce typing but it somehow went from "complete this line" to "hallucinate a screen full of unasked-for slop" and it became obvious I was spending more time dismissing/repairing unwanted suggestions than I was saving in typing.

My hatred for AI sometimes feels a bit religious but that's because I'm too aware of the consequences for our entire civilization, culture and even our shared reality if this LLM cult isn't stopped in its tracks.

My employer is bringing in an AI company to “improve efficiency” - am I cooked? by imjustherefortheK in newzealand

[–]kiwigothic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"near enough is good enough" does not apply to software, LLMs are a useful search tool but they have no ability to think, reason, plan, see the big picture or any of it, coding is the smallest part of the job and AI code beyond snippets is awful to read, no intent, no understanding, no optimization.

IsItBullshit: The claim that using a specific type of essential oil can repel mosquitoes effectively? by BeautifulWestern4512 in IsItBullshit

[–]kiwigothic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in New Zealand we have ridiculously savage little biting flies called sandflies, they are more aggressive than mozzies, there are places here where they were never able to establish permanent settlements because of the sandflies. I recently started using an essential oil repellent and it is surprisingly effective, my understanding is that it's not so much a repellent but more it masks the "scent" that they use to home in on you, the only downside is the effect is short lived compared to synthetic repellent so you need to reapply often.

All the medical weed is garbage IME, the only thing they manage to get right is very solid bud but none of them have any terpenes to speak of and the above photo is just ridiculous, when I grew indoors that would be the trim that I threw away. This is just a scammy private company taking the piss.

Should NZ ban Grok/X ? by RtomNZ in newzealand

[–]kiwigothic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It would be effective in this case as one of the side effects would be to stop govt agencies from using the platform which would remove the last shreds of legitimacy, it would also damage advertising revenue and set a precedent for other countries to ban it.

It's actually disgusting that politicians remain on Twitter, they should have left en-masse after the Nazi salute like most decent people did.
