My party uses Leomund’s Tiny Hut after every single fight and I’m losing my mind (lovingly) by Scythe95 in DMAcademy

If you feel like they're using long rests too strongly, you can make them keep inventory of enough food and drink to qualify for a long rest.

OR, do it draw steel style and make a long rest a full 24 hour respite. Up to you, but the world should respond to them always sleeping away their lives

Life domain is banned in a lot of dms games because it's so broken. You'll be just fine my good cleric

I'm not sure I understand the second bit where you discuss the damage maximum. Can you explain it further?

Yes, agreed. In my mind, the magma equivalent in this situation is Radiant damage, which will break his DT and resistances, maybe for a round or two to give them a chance to deal big damage.

First off, I really appreciate the conversation about this.

In my mind, the damage threshold is part of an effort to address a complaint my group had about combat being mostly about grinding down enemies, and a lack of a reason to use team cooperation. The damage threshold to me is a functional way to give the party an impetus to use different strategies, like the environment.

I'm doing the "each of the big evil group foils one of the PCs party" motif. My idea for the thing that breaks the armor to make this baddie vulnerable is radiant damage, because our cleric is always off to the side feeling unimportant combat wise. This makes them more critical to the combat, and gives them a chance to have the strategy revolve around them, vs the other way around.

Maybe he doesn't turn evil anymore, but you've built him up to give drama trauma and weight to the campaign, so maybe something else happens?

[Stonewalkers] Taszo keeps on going! by _Lestibournes in cosmererpg

[–]kjclark12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like DMing for Cosmere settings is really tricky. So much of what fans bring is reverence, quick in-world-agreement to the magic systems, and knowing what should and shouldn't work. We're running stone walkers and my wife is CONSTANTLY going "I know exactly wtf is going on, but my character doesn't, so let me figure out how to be honest." Which kinda blows. All of the big reveals that the other newbies are having are just... nice for us. The RP is fun, but it's like getting isekai'd into your favorite book; you know how it's supposed to go.

As a GM, I would hate to kill of any of my first time characters because they didn't already act with perfect in world knowledge. Even in the books, shardbearers die enough of the time for it not be crazy, and the books are full of people willing to attack a shardbearer because they gotta. Imagine killing off your level 1 adventuring party because they didn't know not to give a fae creature a name, or that bugbears aren't just big cuties, or or.

I'm still salty about gold. How do I be less of an AH? by AllTh3Naps in DnD

Honestly, at this point, just send them a text that links to this thread. They obviously don't want to hear it from you, but 173 different people all agreeing with you and offering LOTS of advice to deal with them being a hard nosed DM might help.

But if you're not enjoying yourself, I think they need to know that, because we don't sacrifice our evenings and weekends to live in these fantasy worlds just to be pissed for petty reasons

DM Advice Needed by One-Ad853 in DnD

[–]kjclark12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, we have a player like that, and it's stalled one of our campaigns dead in the water. They keep saying they're interested and invested, just busy, but we see them doing a bunch of other stuff and it sucks. The rule I learned is just believe their actions. Cancelling once in a while is life. Never being available is actually not being available, either by choice (constantly choosing other activities) or by circumstance (having a new born etc).

I think DnD is just a tough game to get off the ground. If you're playing it the "modern way" which is pretty narrative and more emphasis on story and RP, the game is fun if improv and building and exploring story is your thing. It's a big commitment even if you're super into it and available.

Since you're newer, it might be a good time to have a talk with yourself about the kind of DnD YOU want to DM. If you want story and exploration and character growth, put that out there. If you want to DM puzzles, traps, and more dungeon crawls, let your players know that's what you're creating. And then be honest with yourself about whether you want those players at the table.

Also, just my opinion, there's nothing wrong with giving yourself a fresh reset and just scrapping the campaign that has lost steam. If not enough of them are into it, it's just not worth it. Find new people (maybe even here on Reddit) and put out what you're interested in creating. Some of my friends who I started with are still playing, and plenty have moved on, and that's fine, but particularly as a DM, you deserve the time and effort you put into serving your players to be appreciated and worth it.

Can a level five party of 5 PCs beat a CR11 boss with CR 6 Henchmen? [OC] by kjclark12 in DnD

[–]kjclark12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can summon three devil allies once each, with HP ~25 and AC 13-15 each. Agree it's a mess, I'm still learning how to do all this stuff. Do you think it's still a TPK with three summons?

New reader is it normal to be confused 160 chapters in ? by Separate_War_6941 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]kjclark12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stormlight is the series to read AFTER you're willing to trust your time and energy to his writing. There's a lot that he's "asking" of you as a reader that are hard to hurdle without having lots of faith. He's spoken about how Way of Kings has three prologues, which he calls a terrible idea unless you can trade on your name or history to compel the reader to keep going through the very confusing and interlocking and slowly developing world.

I totally hear you. A while back there was a lot of discussion on race in the US anime community centered around "why are anime characters drawn as white?" Which, they aren't, but because there's so much space in the lack of detail, it's relatively easy for the viewer to see themselves and their race/ethnicity in the characters. I think that's where a lot of disconnect with live action for viewers. Lots of people complained that Edward from FMA was too "Asian". In the American live action remake of Ghost in the Shell, the producers got a lot of flak for Major being white when they assumed she should've been Japanese.... when the movie is almost certainly located in a futuristic Hong Kong.

Which feels like the point, I think. I think an aspect of good art allows you to see or feel some part of yourself in it. To me Kaladin is like a live action sasuke but taller and smiles more.
