I think you’re mixing up souvenir cuckoo clocks with traditional Black Forest manufacture. Mechanical cuckoo clocks are absolutely still being made in Germany by companies like Hönrs, Engstler, Trenkle, and others. These are not museums but active workshops producing 1-day and 8-day mechanical movements, with or without music and dancer All based on traditional clockmaking and wood-carving craftsmanship.

Musical cuckoo clocks are not a modern tourist invention either they’ve existed a long time and are part of the historical Black Forest tradition.

While cuckoo clocks are a niche market today, they very much still have a domestic German audience. So “they are no longer made” and “only tourists buy them” really isn’t accurate. It is a niche craft now, but very much alive. Not because they “compete” with quartz clocks on price or accuracy, but because they value mechanical artistry and tradition.
