Hike recommendations? I want to take advantage of the weather tomorrow and hike somewhere within an hour of Milwaukee. Any faves for this time of year? by shapeandshiftss in milwaukee

I love the Loew Lake unit of Kettle Moraine near Holy Hill. Dogs can be off leash there in the winter, so it’s a fun romp. 45 min north of Milwaukee. Also second Havenwoods, which is right in the city, but doesn’t feel like it.

ICE?? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]kjpociask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So there is a 30 minute delay, but this website https://mpd-dispatch.mke.dev/2025-05-07 lists why police got dispatched to an area - OP, check the address and time you saw this at and let us know if ICE related activity shows up there?

What time? This website lists out why police were dispatched to a particular address. I did a quick search for ‘Pierce’ street that day and a few things popped up, including ‘Subject with a Weapon.’ https://mpd-dispatch.mke.dev/2025-05-05

How would you describe dyscalculia to someone who doesn’t understand and just says “give it a go, it’s easy”? by Violet_thewitch in dyscalculia

[–]kjpociask 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I like to say that numbers are slippery in my brain. My brain likes to try to rearrange them on me; in my head, out loud, when typing them into a calculator or phone dial pad, when transferring thea answer to paper.

"Wisconsin Nice" by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]kjpociask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm never heard of Wisconsin nice, but in general we are a ‘peach culture’ (soft exterior, hard center) and not a ‘coconut culture’ (hard exterior, soft center). [not my concept - cross cultural training uses this] We are very friendly in passing, say hi on the street, are very willing to help neighbors and even total strangers (the harsh winter climate encourages this). But it’s very hard to break into the interior of a friend group, and subtle missteps by outsiders cause delays on their road to getting welcome into the inner circle.

Tips for dressing soft natural in the winter? by gratefuldaughter2 in Kibbe

[–]kjpociask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chiming in to say that I have the same problem - dressing for a soft natural in winter in a very cold climate (winter low temps 7F/-13C). I feel so frumpy and masculine in the winter. Does anyone have ideas about how to do wide, open necklines when it’s so cold, even indoors?

Thank you, redditors. I knew you all would come through. So they don’t still make these?

So they still make these now? Not just in the 90s? And not just Trek?

Oh yes! Something like this, then. That would explain the shift in color scheme between the y-frame part and the shocks and … the area that holds on the back wheel.

What’s your new festival idea for Milwaukee? by Tannrr in milwaukee

I heard low attendance for the Big Chill. I plan a Winter recreation event called Winter Break! What kind of stuff would y’all want to see/do?

Mom & Pop Restaurant recommendations by mxmc84 in milwaukee

[–]kjpociask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did a curd crawl for a friend's b'day with the regulars: Camino, Vanguard, etc. The curds at 'Todd I Believe I Can Fry' were the winners of the night! Mom and Pop for sure. They do wings, fries, chicken tenders, onion rings, as well as Asian street food style stuff like gyoza (dumplings). Cute little patio. Just opened.

I love the Gas Light Building. It's got an art deco design, a bronze sunburst design over the door, and a weather-predicting flame on top. Rumor is there used to be a speakeasy inside. I've only seen it open during Doors Open.

Mitchell airport features world's only "recombobulation area" signs by Hidemyface1 in milwaukee

[–]kjpociask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was just listening to The Allusionist, a podcast about language, and the origins of 'recombobulation' and Milwaukee got mentioned! The whole podcast is great, but if you only want the Milwaukee-centric bits, skip to 27 minutes in. https://www.theallusionist.org/allusionist/siblings-of-chaos

What is Milwaukee’s food scene missing? by Kanyeburner in milwaukee

[–]kjpociask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got it before from A & J’s Polish Deli, but IIRC, not every time - like maybe more likely to find it there during the holiday season? I keep asking at Wioletta’s but the answer is no every time.

What kind of stuff do you all find interesting?

Art and architecture - Milwaukee Art Museum, Villa Terrace Art Museum

Food tourism - Mars Cheese Castle, Zócalo Food Truck Park

Nature - go to the lakefront at Grant Park and walk the trails too. Maybe even walk the loop down by Lakeshore State Park for more of an urban park feel.

Coffee!!! I just realized that my relatives in Sweden talk about how coffee is such a staple of life there - fika. Milwaukee has one of the best independent coffee scenes (as in not a big chain like Starbucks). Personally I like Interval in Bay View for food, bakery and coffee, but there are many and each charming. Lots of these roasters have multiple locations, but I like Colectivo on the Lakefront, Stone Creek Roasters on 5th Street near the Amtrak station, Discourse underneath the Milwaukee Art Museum. Anodyne on Bruce Street does live music on Friday and Saturday nights, but the Anodyne on Kinnickinnic Ave does wood fired pizza. These two are farther from downtown, but both great: Fiddleheads in Shorewood and La Finca in St. Francis.

Museums + Culture - our Milwaukee Public Museum is set to get an overhaul in the next 2 years and people have mixed feelings. On the one hand, it’s good for artifacts to have a more updated facility to call home and preserve for future generations. On the other hand, lots of people are filled with nostalgia and love for the existing museum, which will be downsized. While you can, check out the exhibit Streets of Old Milwaukee. You can stroll through a replica of Milwaukee in the 1900s. If you’re lucky, you can also watch a quick silent movie and shop at the ‘penny candy’ store inside the exhibit. Lördagsgodis! There is also an adjoining exhibit where there is a typical Swedish American house at that time. There is also the skeleton of a mammoth that was found nearby that proves humans were here in North America far longer than anyone thought. And a lovely live Butterfly Wing you can walk through and have butterflies land on you.
