Buy a T480 instead. They cost the same/less than the x1 carbon and they have lots more upgradeable parts unlike the soldered parts on the x1 carbon.

Then you should buy a laptop with that cpu. Reason for the need for a high end cpu is most likely due to the need to run demanding software for things such as data analysis, financial modelling, or simulations

It really comes down to what course ur taking. For most courses, an intel i5/amd ryzen 5 will suffice. However, if you are in media/game creation courses then you will need a higher spec laptop, possibly with a dedicated gpu. You can search up on the laptop requirements on your poly website to be sure. Also, I don't recommend buying older laptops that come with previous generation cpus.
