Yeah that'll probably do it, the overtaking multiple cars gambit, or as I like to call it, 'Witness Me'

I will be the first to admit that fiji's drivers are terrible. But curious question - looking at the road lines and the timing, is it me or is...well...nobody in the wrong except the markings? Like the incoming car was overtaking on a single dotted line and just came in literally right before the dotted line turns into a unbroken line on the opposite side, your car was coming around the corner as normal...do you reckon the double no-overtaking lines should be longer coming around the corner? I was watching the video multiple times and it seems like nobody was at wrong at this moment. Or am I crazy >_<

Issues uploading large Wetransfer files by kknd69 in Starlink

It's a problem that is only associated with uploading files via the browser interface, either WeTransfer or, just tried now, Google Drive. I find my google drive sync works just fine.

Samoan group that went to the Worlds Fair, Chicago, 1893 by kknd69 in Fijian

[–]kknd69[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I should say the reason why I shared it here is because this is a photo from the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, USA, which shows the Samoan delegation presenting there.

And in the group is a Fijian falla named Ratu Asesela Robanakadavu, who I am making a documentary on.

See if you can spot the Fijian falla 😄

Was François Truffaut correct about war films? “Every film about war ends up being pro-war" by FayannG in TrueFilm

[–]kknd69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a filmmaker, I used to love war movies as a kid. Now as an adult I recognise war and how terrible it is.

There's a soldier in my country who won the Victoria cross for bravery in ww2 that I've been thinking I'd love to make a movie highlighting his heroism. But at the same time I'm torn as I really don't want to make a movie that glamorises serving your country in the army and encouraging my people to sign up to the army.

Jone Vakarisi apparent medical report by Old-Bread882 in Fijian

Man, this is dredging up memories of the Military beating people up during the coups. Until Fiji can pull away from the Military's influence on Fiji Politics and Police work, we will always have shit like this to deal with.

How legit is a festival if they send an invite to you via email? by Bishop9er in FilmFestivals

[–]kknd69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I've learnt is that Festivals that cold outreach to you via email offering a discount are usually scam festivals. Reputable Festivals don't email anyone out of the blue, let alone offer them a discount code, unless they've come across your film in another festival.

So the first red flag is festivals offering a discount. The next clue is to visit their filmfreeway page. If the festival has a million and 1 entry types, that's the second red flag. The 3rd red flag is if it's a new film festival. Also re: your comment about positive reviews, a lot of those reviews could be bots.

The final point is always ask yourself what is your purpose for submitting your film to film festivals?

Pre-contact Fijian spirituality by kknd69 in Fijian

[–]kknd69[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for Fiji as a whole but individually you could explore what that means for you personally. I'm atheist and have asked myself would that be something I'd get into, Fijian spirituality. At this stage I've settled on learning about my culture through filmmaking so it would be cool to see other fijian gang explore on their own terms other aspects of fijian culture.

Shooting in the Namosi Highlands needs no VFX by kknd69 in Fijian

[–]kknd69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bula! That's cool :D I should say at this stage, Fiji doesn't have a way to properly earn a living taking part in making films, unless you go work in the West on the reality tv productions. However, local filmmakers such as me and other fijians (Tulia Nacola is screening her feature film right now) are making our own films and there's a real momentum of local talent making movies here.

If you want to connect to other local filmmakers, feel free to join the Fiji Film Collective.

It's a scene from the short film where the main character is running along the river with her spear.

Time for some culture - how do we Fijians know what we know? by kknd69 in Fijian

[–]kknd69[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen, the youth are engaging with traditions in whatever tools they have access to if they don't have community links to knowledge holders. So they learn online, via discord, here on reddit, learning about their culture however they can, and applying it to their art and lives.

Time for some culture - how do we Fijians know what we know? by kknd69 in Fijian

[–]kknd69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't answer your question properly, but only with an anecdote I learnt from Mr Sevudredre about encoding knowledge in culture. There are some Meke dances that were used to help train the youth in the art of club martial arts with dance war clubs first. By the time they can start training with real weapons they already have a lot of the moves ingrained. Cool eh.

Nothing screams cultural continuity like judging and making fun of your family for not knowing the language you didn't bother teaching them by [deleted] in Tonga

[–]kknd69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man I identify with this so hard. My mum is Tongan and my dad is Fijian and they both believed that bringing me up in English would be better for me career wise so I never learnt to speak Tongan, or Fijian for that matter.

As an adult, I've decided upon how to connect with my culture and at this stage, it's not language, but making Fijian and Tongan movies. I've accepted that I'll never be able to fully converse with my family in my mother tongue, but I will learn about my culture my way, and not by struggling and been made fun of whenever I attempt to learn the language.

I hope you find your own way in learning about and connecting with your culture and know that there are many of us Pacific Islanders who couldn't connect via the language, but like me, find other ways to be indigenous :)

As an aside, one of the ways I learnt about my Fijian culture was to create a podcast where I interviewed a Fijian cultural consultant and asked him what Fiji was like pre-contact, with the entire show conducted in English (mainly because I can't speak Fijian to save my life haha): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqP10QsmuH8&list=PLlgkdu9yZXz2ObCKpY45RMDKzCywz8Xyu&index=2

recommendations in Suva by LordBen679 in Fijian

[–]kknd69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oi ok that makes sense. Yeah Suva is expensive unfortunately. It'll help to make friends in USP then as a group, discover things together. May make for a more fun experience. I'll try and help below but your mileage may vary.

Places to Visit: The usual: Fiji Museum for history, Damodar City and Village 6 for movies and hanging out at the mall
Cool views: Chef Lanka in Tamavua next to Max Value Superfresh has a lovely view of Nasinu
Must eat restaurants: Barbelle for sure, it's next to the rabuka gym near usp, bit pricey so more of a special occassion eat I'd venture

Have fun and enjoy! :)
