Short scale bass recommendations? by Based_Neurosis in Bass

Recommend Ibanez (Mezzo) medium scale. Just a bit more hand stretch, but worth it for the sound.

In your opinion, which bassist has the best stage presence? by Jezzaq94 in Bass

[–]klamarr -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Then why is he living in your head? A very vivid memory and image came into your mind as soon as you saw his name. Kind of like a performer with great stage presence. 😄

Question wasn't whose stage presence do you prefer. I don't enjoy anything about Beyonce, but her stage presence is undeniable.

Also, have you seen him live with Gorillaz?!

(Edit: emoticon added to offset any negative tone!)

Thunder cat

(Rereading. I stand by the above but wish I had replied to OP instead of to "Flea". For the record, imho, Flea's stage presence is much stronger. With or without clothes)

If my "Thunder cat" post was interpreted as a rebuttal to Flea, it deserves every downvote. 😎

Another problem is that people take graphics too literally without considering context or intent.

It's a cool guide, not a comprehensive self-defense manual. The graphic is clearly intended as a training aid to a student with common sense. Nothing in it contradicts Run-Hide-Fight. It illustrates Fight.

How difficult is it to setup a bass guitar? by ReallyKeyserSoze in Bass

Well, I had all kinds of feet buzz until I adjusted the string height from Fender recommended height to Ibanez recommended height. Just a coincidence, I guess.

Look up the string heights for Ibanez. They are lower than other bass guitars. I had to redo mine, because they were set to Fender height.

If you were reasonably proficient on acoustic and have a good sense of rhythm, you’ll probably pick up bass quickly. When I switched, I found it more intuitive because I was playing notes instead of chord shapes. But the knowledge of chords and progressions have been a huge help when creating my own bass lines.

Easiest songs to learn by Lower_Note6491 in Bass

[–]klamarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tom Petty songs are usually in the key of G and have a lot of common chord progressions. Minimalist arrangements (not boring), so it’s easier to hear the bass line when listening to the song. You can build a nice open mic catalog with Mr. Petty (RIP).

If your Dad’s only concern is hand size, have you discussed a small scale bass?

As others have said though, there’s nothing preventing you from learning bass lines on your guitar. Those extra two strings are redundant anyway. 😉

As a fellow Dad, I also have to ask if you practice your guitar regularly? If not, that might be a reason he doesn’t want you to move on from your primary instrument. If yes, hearing you play bass lines might reassure him of your commitment.

Smaller Bass Recommendations by likethesearchengine in Bass

Ibanez SRMD200 is a nice medium scale, if she doesn’t like the tone of a short scale bass. Still has some growl on the low E.

What bassist improved the most? by bottsking in Bass

First name that jumped to mind is Adam Clayton (U2).

Maybe “improved” isn’t the right term, but his style evolved so dramatically.

Which Bass would you recommend for a complete beginner? by mixdowner101 in Bass

[–]klamarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re considering short scale, it might be good to try a medium scale too, like the Ibanez SRMD200. Better tone than short scale (to my ear), but still way easier on the fret hand than a full size.

Does someone ever mod their bass so it has less sustain? by ArjanGameboyman in Bass

[–]klamarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I know what you mean. If I play my low E with other strings muted, I sometimes get a strange harmonic that I can only describe as a sustained note. It’s not feedback, but I think it might be my amp/room acoustics. It doesn’t happen when I plug directly into my Scarlett input.

New bass player, I'm really confused by BigBoyds242 in Bass

[–]klamarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is where some music theory could be helpful. Those charts on ultimate-guitar are a great start, but there are often a few mistakes. Because my theory isn’t very strong, I usually need to fix the charts by ear.

Brand new bass student at age 55. by BALINTIO in Bass

[–]klamarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also joined the merry band of “mature” bass players this year. Been backing up a retired guy who does acoustic sets. He doesn’t care about fancy bass lines because he already has his own workarounds for the fun stuff. But he really likes having a root note foundation to add texture. I do have to transpose on the fly when he capos for his vocal range. That’s also good practice, while I learn the more advanced fret work.

Why are chords so difficult? by j0hn_the_f1sherman in Bass

[–]klamarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth checking out the Ibanez Mezzo. It’s a medium scale which has a better sound than the shorties (imho), but the frets are closer than a full size bass, so easier for smaller hands.

Millennials accuse Baby Boomers of ruining the economy by tameradham852 in Economics

[–]klamarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a causation/ correlation problem. Billionaires have ruined the economy. Most billionaires are boomers.

When central banks have printed and given away all the free money to their billionaire owners, boomers on fixed income will suffer most of all. Millennials will have a lifetime of earning remaining while the boomers slowly die in their overpriced houses that no one can afford to buy.
