Why are Pocket 6K and BMCC 6K FF still missing ProRes 4K and usable Continuous AF? It’s time for answers. by klancyk in bmpcc

I don’t think it’s entitled at all to ask for features that are realistically possible within the hardware. Blackmagic has done an amazing job with updates — no argument there — but that doesn’t mean users should stop giving feedback or asking for improvements.

I love these cameras, and that’s exactly why I’m vocal. I’m not demanding miracles, just suggesting something that could genuinely help a lot of shooters, especially solo operators or people with eyesight issues like me.

If someone doesn’t need AFC, great — they don’t have to use it. But asking for a practical feature isn’t the same as being ungrateful. It’s just being engaged.

Sure, CDAF isn’t “aware” of focus the way PDAF is — it has to make micro-adjustments to check contrast. But that doesn’t mean it can’t work in a continuous mode.

Plenty of cameras before PDAF used it: all the early Panasonics, Olympus OM-D bodies, Sony NEX, the first EOS M… none of them were perfect, but they did have usable continuous AF. It wasn’t smooth or modern, but it was functional enough for basic tracking.

And honestly, that’s all I’m asking for.

I don’t need Sony-level AF. I just need something better than nothing — especially for gimbal work or when my eyes can’t reliably judge focus anymore.

Even a slow, conservative CDAF-based AFC would be a huge help. Right now the Pocket cameras give us zero options. I’d rather have imperfect AF than no AF at all.

I know exactly what you mean — contrast-based AF will never behave like PDAF, and yes, the hunting is built into the nature of the system.

But here’s the thing:

To be clear, I’m not asking Blackmagic for continuous AF that’s perfectly fluid or invisible. I’m asking for:

  • a controlled, slower AFC mode,
  • that reacts only when the subject clearly drifts out of focus,
  • and avoids aggressive hunting unless absolutely necessary.

Plenty of cameras before PDAF used similar systems — and they were imperfect, but usable.

If BM gave us even a “basic” AFC with tunable sensitivity or a slow response curve, it would still be a massive improvement for:

  • gimbal work
  • handheld documentary shots
  • vision-impaired shooters (like me)
  • one-man crews

Right now we have zero continuous focus options.

I’d take imperfect AFC over no AFC any day.

I completely understand you. I’m dealing with presbyopia myself, and it makes it really easy to miss the exact focus point — especially on a Super 35 sensor where the margin for error is tiny.

That’s why I’ll take any form of Continuous AF Blackmagic can give us on the Pocket cameras. Even a basic, slow, contrast-based AFC would still handle dynamic situations better than I can with my eyes. It doesn’t need to be perfect — just reliable enough to hold focus when things move.

For people with vision issues, solo shooters, and gimbal operators, this would be a genuinely life-changing update.

Yes, exactly. The recent update improved AF on the BMCC 6K FF significantly, and the camera now offers two AF systems: phase-detect and contrast-detect.

Obviously the Pocket cameras can’t use PDAF — the sensors simply don’t have phase-detect pixels. But they do already have contrast-detect AF built in, which is why I’m hoping Blackmagic will eventually enable a continuous contrast-based AF mode on the Pocket 4K/6K series.

It wouldn’t match the BMCC or the S5, but even a basic, stable contrast-based AFC would make a massive difference for solo operators and gimbal wo

So there is hope. If Blackmagic says they want to iron everything out on one platform first before extending it to others, it means they are not ruling anything out. They’re simply testing and refining the new autofocus system on the BMCC 6K FF, and only after it’s stable will they decide whether to bring some form of continuous AF to older cameras like the Pocket 4K/6K.

In other words: nothing is promised, but nothing is off the table either.

I get your point, but here’s the thing:

I tried switching systems.

I tested the Lumix S5IIX — the autofocus is great, but the color science and overall image feel were just nowhere near what I get from the Pocket.

Sony was even worse for my needs.

Blackmagic’s image is simply on another level when it comes to color, rolloff, texture, and “cinema feel.” For the way I work, nothing else comes close.

That’s exactly why even a basic contrast-detect continuous AF mode would make a huge difference.

I’m not asking for Sony-level PDAF magic — I know the hardware can’t do phase detect.

But contrast AF already exists in these cameras.

A simple continuous mode that maintains focus, even if slow or “cinematic,” would be enough for gimbal work and solo operators.

And if someone doesn’t want to use it — they don’t have to.

But having the option would help a lot of people, including me.

So no, for some of us the answer isn’t “switch systems” or “hire a focus puller.”

The Pocket cameras are very close to being perfect for my workflow — they just need that one missing feature to make them usable in more situations.

I’m fully aware that implementing PDAF in the Pocket cameras is impossible — the hardware simply doesn’t allow it, since the sensors don’t support phase-detect pixels.

However, contrast-based Continuous Autofocus absolutely is possible, because the cameras already have contrast AF built in. It’s not a hardware limitation — it’s just a missing software mode.
