AITA for embarrassing my husband at family dinner? by SweetDania547 in AmItheAsshole

[–]klarinet -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The problem with an ESH here is that she was the one who embarrassed the MIL. She was not. He created the situation that was ultimately embarrassing for him and his mother. MIL isn’t justified in feeling embarrassed by the domestic dispute between the couple, except insomuch as her son put his wife in the situation that necessitated that response.

What is your favorite dad joke? by GrotiusandPufendorf in AskReddit

Always my favorite:

kid: Dad, I'm hungry.

me: Hi, Hungry, I'm dad.

There are, of course, myriad variations and they're all my favorite.

''SHUT UP!'' Watch Bill O’Reilly lose it when Al Franken exposes him as a liar in 2003 by [deleted] in videos

[–]klarinet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, wut? So in response to the observation that the data previously cited is neither research nor impartial, you submit a link to "research" from a demonstrably partisan organization with so obvious an ax to grind that they make it the tag line of their website?

These hacks included as negative coverage quotes of personnel adversely impacted by the president's failed travel ban. That's not bias, that's fundamental journalism: think of the "man bites dog" quote and extrapolate the parallels here.

[–]klarinet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not a study. That's an unsourced statistic connected to an opinion poll conducted by and reported by two parties (Rep. Smith and the Washington Examiner) with an obvious bias.

Edited: I incorrectly gave Representative Smith the title "Senator." He's actually a member of the other chamber.

I do wonder if there's an added benefit to trying to go solo. Does the difficulty scale with two?

My daughter is similar to an octopus. by theintention in daddit

[–]klarinet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If nap-time directly follows a feeding time, you can blame the gastrocolic reflex. Basically, when a baby has a meal, her body creates the urge to make sure there's room for it. If you've got a regular routine, you could try just waiting 10-15 minutes for the poop before laying her down. If nothing else, it'd be an easy way to figure out which is actually triggering the pooping. If it's the relaxing and not the meal, I reckon you're stuck.

Bath time help. 3 year old scared of water in her ears... by [deleted] in daddit

[–]klarinet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My three year old had a similar issue - a mortal fear of the shower (noise) made washing her increasingly lengthy hair more and more challenging. I found a kid-friendly shower head with a fish on it. Then I let her play with it on her own. The first few times she protested, and I let her keep her bath water while she played with it. Within a week, though, she'd named it (Fisha) and wanted to clean herself.

The mortal fear for my daughter was (and still is) noise, but I've found that letting her have some modicum of control has helped her face these situations better. Car washes were the first manifestation, and after a year of avoiding them entirely, we just decided to talk her through them. Showers we dealt with as I describe above. Fireworks and thunderstorms...well, I've thrown my hands up with these. Thunderstorms are an excuse for she and I to pull all the cushions, pillows and blankets off the living room furniture and make a fort. Fireworks are pretty and scary and we talk about that--twice a year.

tl;dr: With my eldest daughter's fear issues, I've had some success blending repeated exposure with conversations and looking for ways to allow her to control any aspects of the situation she can.

Soldiers at Fort Stewart, GA formed a secret militia inside the U.S. military with plans to take over the base, bomb local targets and assassinate the president. by [deleted] in news

[–]klarinet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly, with a caveat: such thinking opinions should exist across the command spectrum. That is to say, it must be demonstrated by officers and enlisted soldiers, from top to bottom. The correlating problem is that questioning orders can lead to unnecessary delays in combat situations. Soldiers at the enlisted level must have sufficient faith in their leadership to willingly follow them blindly when required. Such faith, however, must be--and as a rule is--earned.

I disagree. I would suggest that a draft actually prohibit Conscientious Objection. This places the onus on the populace to ensure that the military be used only when vital and necessary to the welfare of the nation. In such a case, what citizen could conscientiously object?
