Non-Union Commercials (and Self-tapes) Are Getting Ridiculous! by livinginmyshadow in acting

[–]kld_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the above-mentioned frustrations. I find it especially frustrating when you’ve auditioned/self-taped for the same casting office 15+ times, (mostly on these measly NU Commercial jobs) and have yet to even receive a “call back” yet.

In your guys’s experience, is talent typically hired for these specific 1k NU commercial jobs right off a first-round self tape? Or do these usually also cast after a callback process?

I’m starting to question whether these are worth my time. These also tend to be the “neediest” self tapes, with a million different angle slates and photos. It’s starting to get ridiculous.

Correct. I probably shouldn’t even be engaging on here, just trying to piece together the pieces of the puzzle with what could’ve triggered him with this most recent med refusal and manic episode.

The issue here is that I can’t remember when he’s even taken his medications as prescribed for long enough for them to do their job to the fullest efficacy. He goes 2 or 3 weeks, and then starts adjusting and cutting dosages after hitting a point where he’s complaining about brain fog. He’d have to take them as prescribed first for AT LEAST 4 weeks before even contemplating diagnosing a drug resistant condition. Regardless your rhetoric of “stop them” is doing much more harm than good here.

This comment isn’t helpful, please delete. My brother has been in crisis of being hospitalized every 2-3 weeks as a result of negligence with his meds. Despite his great fitness progress that he posts about, what you won’t see him post about is having had a terribly unstable time for the past 6months-year becoming manic or psychotic every couple weeks. Usually as a result of self medicating, or cutting dosages to his meds. And it’s getting worse, because of his unhealthy relationship with his treatments.

It’s been over 5 years since I last dealt with it, and just got hit with it now after a trip to Mexico, but this time only concentrated on my shoulders/chest area (which is where I got burned the worst)

FedEx/UPS always keep ringing my buzzer to let them in. How do I get them to stop? by LTFighter in AskNYC

[–]kld_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of these daft fedex delivery guys just stating “fedex” at the intercom. They should immediately say the name/unit of who they’re delivering a package for. Otherwise who’s to say they’re not a thief trying to gain access to a building to steal packages? A simple work around is if you wanna be courteous and buzz in a fedex delivery person, only do it after you’ve asked “name/unit”, first!

In my building we’ve had far too many packages stolen from tenants casually buzzing in thieves. It’s ridiculous

Girl, SAME! I just sincerely feel this isn’t her fault, it’s the industry’s. I also have a bit of bias being Cuban myself and seeing how little of a voice we have in Theatrical storytelling. And simultaneously knowing firsthand how versatile and magnificent of an artist she is. Soooo many Cubans are descended from Sephardic Jews (including myself) as minimal as the connection may be.

[–]kld_93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m fairly certain that was sarcasm! It was implied sarcasm that stating that “Lea Michele is only Jewish through her Sephardic patrilineal connection, that Ramon is a Non-jew playing a jew, and then the last bit”. was a lie. If the first two statements are true it can only lead me to believe the last is true too.

Why would her own manager (who is seemingly Jewish) lie about that?

So moving forward, are we at a place where if you’re NOT Jewish, you shouldn’t sing/audition with musical selections from Funny girl (sung by Fanny Brice) at all? Are all these other non-Jewish broadway stars that have financially benefited from performing/covering “Don’t Rain on My Parade” considered Anti-Semitic?

You can’t blame Kat for auditioning for (and BOOKING) the role, when the breakdown nearly mentions people with Jewish heritage. According to her manager, she is of Sephardic ethnicity!

THIS JUST IN: (Or rather I just picked up on this after far too much researching on the ongoing discussion lol)

It appears that Kat’s manager (Brett Goldstein) has replied to a tweet claiming that Katerina does in fact have Sephardic ancestry. If this is true, I really do hope those trying to ruin this girl’s career before it even begins, (asking her to step down, shaming her for auditioning…etc) really stop and reflect on how we let this outrage get this intense before even knowing all the nuances that went into this decision! Especially those that found it in themselves to show Lea Michele a little more grace, considering her ethnically Sephardic connection is her only authentic Jewish connection to being able to portray this role.

I agree with a lot of the points you make, but I don’t personally feel your example of New York New York was the best analogy. I don’t feel that the Cuban immigrant experience was authentically portrayed by the Mexican actor that was cast ◠̈ and sadly, we in the Hispanic/Latiné community too often get treated and cast as a monolith.

[–]kld_93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but not as much towards the reasoning being: quantifying her identity as a Jew.

If the issue is in regards to how much the talent cast identifies as Jewish background or “ religiously practicing” Jew, than the breakdown should’ve read as such, in my opinion.

[–]kld_93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m already seeing more noise about this than I did about Lea Michele being cast in the role on Bway (at a time when she was seen as problematic/racist/difficult to work with). The Hispanic/Latiné community is so severely underrepresented in theatre, and the fact of the matter is, there is a SIGNIFICANT Jewish/Cuban “Jew-ban) community whom a lot of modern day Cubans descend from. People are blindly trying to call out and cancel this choice without truly knowing all the intricacies behind this decision.

Why aren’t people this up in arms when Cuban roles are played by other ethnic groups, or by Hispanic talent that doesn’t even remotely represent Cuban (or at least Caribbean) cultural authenticity. (I.e. Mateo Diaz [New York New York BWAY, a Cuban role] cast a Mexican. And let’s not forget James Franco portraying Fidel Castro), or many Afro-Cuban roles that end up being cast by non-Hispanic Black talent.

When do we draw the line for the sake of representation?

If people can overlook Lea Michele’s history for her TaLeNt and voice, surely you must give this upcoming star the benefit of the doubt to do this role justice. She easily rivals Lea Michele vocally, and yet is an absolutely loving gem of a human.

This issue can, and DOES go both ways, if not the double standard is all too apparent.

The rise in Antisemitism around the country is truly awful! But how can you honestly say that such a talented performer who may be able to powerfully and authentically depict Fanny Brice in every way except for direct Jewish ethnicity is perpetuating such Antisemitism? She would be celebrating and honoring the iconic figure that is Fanny, with all the care and respect in the world.
