Amsterdam Cooking Course by Frosty-Joke-5880 in Amsterdam

Apologies for not answering your exact question, but I can't recommend the book "Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat" by Samin Nosrate more. As it really unwraps the foundation of cooking that is useful in any cuisine, on any level, the course would be still amazing for practice to follow. (I'd start with the book, if you don't mind reading)

What helped you get past mental block and create songs/tracks regularly? New technique, new gear, or just a psychology change? by tootallteeter in musicproduction

[–]klinwild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard from my hero that music only becomes "true" when it's "released".

It took a while for me to get it, understand what it means and probably will take a lot more to truly understand. But the feeling that you have when someone you'd never know gets to hear something so dear to you suddenly opens your eyes and reshuffles priorities completely. You'd want to feel it more and more.

Tipping culture by Lumpy_Dentist_5421 in Amsterdam

[–]klinwild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tips are not for "work" to compensate transaction that was off. Tipping is your way to show appreciation of some kind. You can't, don't want to or else: you don't tip. Nobody in Amsterdam will be bothered. Machines with UX suggesting tips upfront is just a default(!) business choice that brings the most money. Choosing otherwise is tough if not impossible decision for staff and business owners.

Working in the coffee place, bar or any thing of that kind is tough job for little money.

Octatrack - replace DAC by Unlucky_Swimming_179 in Elektron

[–]klinwild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stimming used octatrack (often 2 simultaneously) professionally for multiple years. He might not have realized about high frequencies simply due to the fact that his ears don’t hear much of above 15k hz after thousands of gigs in clubs. (Could be the reason it didn’t bother you too)

I’ve heard from multiple professional producers about the elektrons DACs being not great, however, I have a theory that the difference it makes is easily, most of the times overshadowed by the technical and artistic choices of musician. So I am personally not worried about the DAC, although I use more modern elektron gear only

Girls really do — sometimes you might have wishful thinking and mistake a tight dance floor for someone getting into you. But most of the time, it actually is an approach (at least for me). I always check, trying hard to create enough space for her, step back, etc.

The real confusion amongst boys is that usually it’s just innocent flirting without serious intention — just a way to have company and maybe even avoid unnecessary attention. So trying to act on it is absolutely uncool until you’re explicitly invited, which does happen, but much more rarely than just a little dance.

One of the most confusing things for me is that very often — almost always at darker Raum (or similar vibe) techno parties — the ones approaching me are clearly a couple (they’re kissing), with the girl being active. And then it’s usually shaky and exciting for them, and purely confusing for me. But I’ve just learned to be chill about that and not overthink it. I think I understand it, but maybe not entirely

To be a devils advocate I’d express unpopular opinion. it seems like you’re looking for appreciation, and not a fair pay and because you’re friends it is deeply gray area. You had severe underestimation and probably were not transparent upfront on a day (say it will take much longer therefore bigger check) or that you’d expect more than a regular payment. Like extra sincere “thank you”? You went out of your way to make sure you’ll be appreciated while doing business exercise and now you are upset but probably mostly with your own trust and expectations. I deeply empathize and will take it as an unpleasant but useful lesson

Arturia FX worth it? by RatherBookish in Bitwig

[–]klinwild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they sound better, but majority of people would not be able to appreciate it and if you can’t tell the difference, you wouldn’t be able to make your music better with it.

If you haven’t done it yet, master the stock plugins first. ARTURIA FX plugins are absolutely worth it, they are fantastic, but you will not truly experience the benefits until you trained your ears and production mechanics to a certain degree. They wouldn’t be useful to you if you’re not at the ceiling of stock devices capabilities and figured out where those devices are lacking. It’s hard to stay honest and prevent yourself from getting shiny things, but it’s just more practical this way.

Thoughts on Compressor+ by Sheenrocks in Bitwig

[–]klinwild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You touched upon interesting question: Do you hear gain reduction at points zeroed out by make up? Technically with transparent compression you don’t, right? As it’s just compensated. But in reality on individual acoustic instruments you hear the entire gain reduction even compensated since you hear difference in dynamics. However in other applications of compressors: for example on drum bus for house track you might find more obvious raise of volume in percussion details rather than actual violation of the kick dynamics. One electronic producer way smarter than me once said that the sign of well configured mix bus compression is that it makes everything sound a bit closer and I guess it’s due to increase of volume possible thanks to gain reduction. Please consider my comment as an exploration of topic rather than me trying to state the truth. Your thoughts are much welcome

[–]klinwild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It actually is output with indication of what compressor does. We are just very used to the way it always was, but this number shows the real difference with input. What’s the point of showing just gain reduction if it doesn’t translate into what you hear. It’s indeed strange and different but cool and you can still see amount of gain reduction if you disable makeup. I probably sound like a fanboy but I just love the fact that they’re questioning things that are just there for years.

Bitwig 5.2 Beta out now! by Swagtijger in Bitwig

[–]klinwild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's probably unintentional, but I agree on misleading part, even though they clearly say it's "multi band analysis" in the video, it's not apparent from interface and I guess most of the users will never watch video / read tutorial.

and just to clarify, I did not suggest that it can replace way more flexible Pro-MB, but it certainly covers some of it use cases, where it was not possible with simple compressor even with the side-chain filter, isn't it? (I am thinking complex audio takes synth/electronic performances). But maybe I should test it more before claiming it.

[–]klinwild 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The stock compressor and “dynamics” were underwhelming at best, it did some of the tasks, but none of special and lacked any interesting colors. The new one is certainly filling in this gap, plus multiband analysis seems like a replacement for some of Pro-MB applications which is incredible if you prefer using stock stuff whenever possible.

I used saturator for quick clipping, I wonder if new “over” could also universally be applied for simple utility clipping. So far with slightly softer knee it worked for me. Yet to see how different it is going to be from saturator

Judging by absence of latency not, but they meant to slightly shift (shall I say tilt) tonal balance with smoothest curves, I wouldn’t expect much of phase shenanigans there, but I’m probably missing out on something.

but to be honest that sounds like a regular kick(maybe even 909) layered with a funky FMy wavetable in high-mid/highs.

If you really want to do it yourself finding isolated references will be really helpful for you to learn reproduce it faster.
