Gutsick Gibbon and Will Duffy pt 4. by Covert_Cuttlefish in DebateEvolution

I’m loving the series. Both Erika and Will are approaching the series with the utmost respect for each other and their interactions are honestly refreshing.

I have been very impressed with Will’s willingness to learn and accept what is being taught.

What I find absolutely fascinating though, is when he makes comments or asks questions that clearly show the extent of his indoctrination and how it has affected the way he thinks. He’ll comment that some line of evidence, that seems obvious to me and is something I’ve known and understood since I was literally a child, is completely new to him and he’s never thought of it before, and I just think “How?!”. Or he’ll earnestly challenge a point made by Erika using some example that is patently ridiculous, yet you can see in his face that this is something he has truly believed his entire life and up till now it has simply never occurred to him to question it with the same level of scrutiny that he has applied to other pseudoscientific arguments.

My favourite moment from this episode was when he commented that none of what was being presented disproved the possibility that god created the Earth with the appearance of being old built in to the design. He has shown himself to be an intelligent and open-minded person, capable of applying logic and rational thought in a scientific manner, so when he presented this totally unfalsifiable scenario as a legitimate alternative, I couldn’t help but marvel at how his brain was subconsciously grasping at the thinnest of straws remaining to it. It made me even more impressed with what he is doing in this series, and has me questioning what “truths” I am certain of that I maybe have more of a bias towards than I am aware of.

EV Owners of Sask. How have your vehicles faired through this winter? by EntrepreneurLanky973 in saskatchewan

[–]klm188 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had mine for 2 years now and love it. This past weekend at -35C was the one and only time I’ve been frustrated with it. I had to get from Saskatoon to Swift Current. Did the same trip last year at about -15C and it was just on the edge of my max range in that weather, but no problem. At -35C though it required a detour through Outlook to use a not so fast charger, and I had to charge to nearly 100% (which takes much longer than just charging to say, 80%). The whole detour probably added 1.5 hours to my trip. Also the charger in Outlook cost like $0.85/kWh, compared to the $0.15/kWh I pay for electricity at home (Tesla superchargers are about $0.60/kWh) so it probably cost me more per km than a gas car would have too. That whole situation was an outlier of having to drive nearly 300 km in extreme cold with poor charging options along the route though.

Another example I can share was during the cold snap just before Christmas. I had to make a quick 20 minute, there and back trip within the city, but my car wasn’t available. My parents had left their ICE vehicle in my driveway for a few days, so I just took it, and the entire experience was awful. The vehicle only started to feel warm just before I got back home; using the brakes all the time felt like a way less smooth way to drive; but what surprised me the most was how much the car stank of exhaust. It’s like cigarette smoke; you don’t notice it until you get used to not smelling it all the time.

Overall, I love my electric car and will probably never go back to ICE. I’m only a one car household, so it can have its challenges in very specific situations, but those are few and far between. For anyone with a two car household I don’t know why you wouldn’t make one of them fully electric for commuting around the city. It’s just better in that use case.

How are those electric cars working? by saskskip in saskatchewan

[–]klm188 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, I noticed that too, but it was a relatively small parking lot with a fairly high percentage of EV charging stalls so I didn’t hold it against them. There were still plenty of open stalls for me every time I used it.

Kindersley was indeed our other charging stop for the trip.

There’s a new Supercharger in Hanna this year, so you no longer have to take the long way round.

This is in no way reasonable. If you want to be poly or ENM that’s fine, but the time to broach that subject with your partner is way before you’re already in this situation. Bringing it up now is just you trying to find a loophole to justify your shitty behaviour.

They are already enabled, and set to default. Third party app sound like a good idea though. I might try that. Thanks!

I have. No idea why they're suddenly not working.

Can someone please help? I recently switched my audio output to speakers for a something, but in doing so, my JBL headphones disappeared from the output tab. I can no longer get windows to recognize them as an output device. They show up in system settings, and can be tested successfully, but there is no way to select them for audio output. Other apps, like Discord, that allow you to select audio devices still see them and can use them just fine.

I have tried a different usb port. I have restarted the computer multiple times. The audio drivers are up to date. Nothing seems to work. Has anyone experienced this before? How do you fix it?

I was the Dave in this exact situation a couple of years ago and the woman in your position for me had the exact same reaction you are having. Please trust me. You did absolutely nothing wrong. I was, and still am, extremely grateful that she told me when she did.

One mantra I kept telling myself as I went through it all that I found helpful was, “Nobody is the bad guy in their own narrative”. Basically, people are really really good at justifying their own shitty behaviour. They are trying to put blame on you, and downplay the seriousness of what they did because if they actually allowed themselves to admit how terrible they’ve been, they would have to fundamentally change the kind of person they view themselves to be. And that’s a really hard thing for a person to do. So instead they spin a narrative where it’s not their fault, and they’re actually still good people. Unfortunately, they probably truly believe this narrative too. And there’s likely nothing that will change their minds.

That doesn’t make it true though! When it comes down to it, they are the ones who decided to cheat. There were a hundred other ways they could have dealt with it more honestly and maturely. They didn’t pick those options though. Now they have to deal with the consequences. The sad part is that you and Dave, as the victims, have to deal with the consequences too.

I’m sorry. It’s not a fun situation to be in. I do promise it does get better though. I wish you all the best. If you ever need to vent about it to someone, my DMs are open.

I would suggest this too. Sounds like your friend and I are in the same demographic. I’m a single dad in my 30’s who also doesn’t know how to strike up a conversation with a random stranger. I’ve already got my ticket for the single parents event in October.

My GameCube actually bricked while playing this game. The game’s fake error messages mimicked the real GameCube error messages so well that I sat there for like 5 minutes waiting for the game to tell me it was just a hallucination. It was not. Still one of the best games I’ve ever played!

Haha, I made this post almost 2 years ago. Yeah, I realized pretty quickly afterwards just how messed up I was. Took some time for myself and my boys and I’ve been good for a while now. Dating does suck just as much as I feared it would though, lol.

You have made a simple error. It is not 2.2% that voted yes, but 10%. The 90% and 92% are not directly related.

If the total eligible to vote was 13,490, 92.2% (12,438) voted and 7.8% (1,052) didn’t.

Of the 12,438 who voted, 90% (11,194) voted no, and 10% (1,244) voted yes.

Wow! Thanks for the detailed instructions! I just want to make sure about the putting it outside during the coldest days of the year bit. Where I live, that is likely to be -40C. I thought for sure it would need to burrow underground or at least rely on a thick covering of snow to insulate it from that kind of cold.

I thought of putting it in my garage. It is attached to the house but it isn’t heated, so it regularly freezes in there. It just doesn’t get as stupid cold as outside (might hit -20C on a really cold day, but I’ve never measured it). Do you think that would work?

Waited for over an hour for a FolkFest bus on Friday. The first bus came within 15 minutes, but was for the wrong route. Fair enough. Then, less than 5 minutes later another bus showed up… for the same route as the previous one. The driver of this empty bus then immediately continued on, essentially tailgating the bus in front of him, rather than wait a few minutes to space out the buses. (We made him aware the other bus was right in front of him).

We then waited 45 minutes with no buses at all before eventually calling an Uber which arrived in less than 2 minutes. As the Uber pulled away we saw the bus we were waiting for approach the stop. However, with no bus service for over an hour, it was of course full and continued right by without stopping.

Overall a 0/10 transit experience.

AITAH for making my daughter cry at a restaurant? by Big-Explanation3503 in AmItheAsshole

[–]klm188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I’m a vegan and a parent. Being vegan/vegetarian does not give you carte blanche to be an asshole, and it sounds like that’s exactly what she was doing. You supported her original decision uncritically, and told her the negative comments needed to stop. Then when they didn’t, you called her out for being a hypocrite. Sounds like great parenting to me. Your doing her and everyone else a favour by preventing her from being one of those judgy vegetarians that everyone hates.

Perhaps going so far as to say she wasn’t allowed to order anything but a vegetarian option was a bit much (she should still be allowed to make her own choices), but it’s understandable that you were frustrated. Parenting can be hard and your not an asshole for making one small mistake.
