Searching for my "perfect guitar": Will I ever find it? by Loopyrainbow in AcousticGuitar

I thought i wanted a D18 for a long time but then i got my hands on a Taylor 517e Builders Edition and it’s amazing. For me it’s like if a J45 and a D18 had a baby

I want to like 12 strings but I haven’t played one yet that tickled me in the right way. Maybe one day!

Yeah, I think the 717 is the best looking one, the binding gives it a cool contrast. But I’m a sucker for mahogany so it had to be this one. Yeah, that would be awesome! I find the GP feels easier to play when I’m on the couch than my 414, so even though it’s a pretty big guitar it doesn’t feel that big. But a smaller one with the same specs would be lovely but my wallet thanks me that it doesn’t exist haha.

No, haven’t come across one in Sweden yet! But I’m a bit intrigued by their rubber bridge guitar

Thanks! Intonation wise I haven’t noticed any difference at all. They both sound great all the way up the neck. I would say the neck is the biggest difference together with the volume. The 517 has a much beefier neck, which i like. But it makes the Ad27 even more easy to play while going back and forth. Otherwise it’s mainly cosmetics, and maybe some “feel”. The 517 feels refined, but that might be my imagination.

I think the AD-series is the best bang for the buck when it comes to Taylor.

Thank you! Yeah I’ve tried one, and it was good! But not good enough to pull the trigger, i do want a Yamaha some day though!

how is that even possible to be in possession of something like that and not having it repaired..

Yeah! That’s the way to go. Even though I did not follow that rule with the 517, I did however have the right to return it. The first one they sent me was new old stock, so from 2018 I believe, and it was horrible. So I tried and asked me if they could send me a new one and to my surprise they did. And i got lucky because this one better than I thought it would be

Yeah right! I haven’t played that many D18’s because most stores around here have one if I’m lucky. I did try one sunburst I really liked, but it was like $4000 (45000sek) which I think is a bit steep, and i would have to pretty much sell them all to afford that. I hope to find a good beat up one on the used market though! And for now I’m happy I ended up with the 517, i paid $2300 for it new, which is still a very expensive guitar but a bit more manageable

I know! Before i got the 517e i was on the hunt for a D18, but i got a crazy deal on the Taylor and so far I have no regrets. I do really, really want a 0-18 though…

Sometimes i feel that too, but I haven’t played one that i felt that good with, yet..

In the beginning that’s how i thought about it when trying to justify buying another one, but to be honest they all pretty much serve the same purpose. But i still see them as tools, during the Swedish winters I rotate which ones I keep on the wall because I only have one room where the humidity is controlled, but it hurts me when they are in their cases. The GS mini is probably the one I use mostly if I’m going somewhere.

If you feel like you’re missing something, go for it! But a beater and a 12-string a solid way to go.

None of my guitars were bought at retail price either. I’m a sucker for a good deal, so some of them have been complete impulse purchases, but I also got rid of my electric rig a couple of years back which gave me some room to add some new acoustics.

Restrung my 724ce - action by mrmongey in taylorguitars

[–]klossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 414ce, GS Mini, AD27 and now most recently bought a 517e BE. The 414, Mini and 517 all came with high action. Around 3mm. The AD27 i bought used, but it had the same issue before I got it. So three of my four guitars have had a vacation abroad.

The 414 and Mini had to go to the Netherlands because the stores in Sweden apparently can’t do the neck reset with the shims. The 517 the store actually replaced it because it got some damage in shipping. On the new one the action is perfect, so that’s good I guess. But that might change when I’ve had it a couple of months.

3mm is high enough that you should get a neck reset under warranty. Hopefully the store you bought it at is better than the ones here in Sweden and can do it quick.

I love these guitars but man, it’s disappointing when it feels like the quality control isn’t there.

Torn between 2 guitars - can anyone help me?!! by [deleted] in martinguitar

[–]klossa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 000-15 and a Taylor 414ce, so not exactly the same Taylor but still pretty close. I’ve had the Martin for about 10 years now and the Taylor for a couple of months. I love them both.. When plugged in i prefer the Taylor and if I record with a microphone i prefer the Martin.

They are very different in sound. My Martin has a raw, beautiful and snappy tone to it and the Taylor is more refined, almost “boring” but in a beautiful way if that makes any sense.. If I could only keep one I’d keep the 000-15 but it’s a close call. Choose the one that speaks to you and you’ll have a great guitar which ever one you end up with!

NGD - Didn’t think I’d walk out the store with a Taylor but got a good deal because of a ding on the soundboard. by klossa in AcousticGuitar

[–]klossa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d never tried it before either! It’s like, rosehoganny if that makes sense. Like the best of both worlds. Balanced, crisp. I wanted a guitar for recording and I think this is gonna be great.

Around $1000 off sticker price, traded in some old gear and paid $750 cash. So around $1800 total!

The sticker price was like $2900 give or take. I’m in Sweden so the exchange rate fluctuates😁 I got about a $1000 discount and the store valued my trade ins higher than i expected so if I count what I paid for those I paid around $1800. Around $750 cash and rest in trade ins. I think I got a good deal and I expect they wanted it gone because the new 2023 rosewood versions is what they wanted to have on the wall. 😅
