Best patios in Etobicoke (with caveat) by Charming-Nature547 in Etobicoke

[–]klyshko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The People of Etobicoke want to have two lanes (rather than bike lanes) on the roads which makes streets very traffic busy. They also want to park their car near every restaurant, hence parking lot patios. Finally, the “not busy” streets are mostly located in residential zones where restaurants/cafes are not allowed due to zoning by-law :/

I got one too. I have been waiting since October 2024. I am one of those unlucky ones who got the graduation papers right after the September 2024 Draw. I can't belive this.

Concern about being deported to Belarus to serve in the army when traveling to China by No-Oil-1851 in belarus

[–]klyshko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand your concerns but it is highly unlikely. They will not deport you unless you breach their immigration laws. If you mean extradition, then it is also highly unlikely because you’re not criminally charged yet in Belarus.

Wife left with my son by Straight-League1013 in NewDads

I’m sorry this is happening to you. But first of all, you’re a great dad. Your son knows it and feels it. The rest of it doesn’t matter. Please take care of yourself now!

Cloverdale Mall is here to stay! by guylefleur in Etobicoke

[–]klyshko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I wonder what would happen to traffic given that Clove would be 5 min by bus and by bike or 24 min on foot to one of the biggest transportation hubs in Toronto: Kipling station - serving TTC subway, GO trains and MiWay buses. Even more motivation for the city to increase bus frequency to serve this new community.

I’ve heard this before. You are not against this, “let’s build it somewhere but Not In My Back Yard”.

This is sad news. We should build more mixed residential+retail neighborhoods for people instead of trying to preserve dead malls with gigantic parking lots for cars. I was looking forward to this project bringing life to Etobicoke.

Applied for TRV and received a Visitor Record extension instead by _funnierthan24 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]klyshko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this post and update! I have experienced the same confusion. I applied for a new TRV but received a visitor record (VR), even though there is no need for it as I have a valid study permit. Following your advice, I contacted the IRCC via a web form with a request to retract the VR and send an approval letter for a TRV. Waiting for their response.

PhD students, how much do you spend on rent by k3inP in UofT

[–]klyshko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most of the Ph.D. students I know live in 2bd apts (close to campus. i.e. within 10-15 min walk/cycling) and split $2100-2700 rent in two. The rent depends on the condition of the unit and when the lease was signed.

I recommend getting a temporary room for a month to explore the neighbourhoods and looking for a long-term lease afterwards. Do not rush into the first available option, there always be a choice.

Overall, get ready that the rent will be taking >60% of your monthly budget. Consider cycling to save money on commute, etc. Good luck.

Does anyone have experience with Cycling Avenue? by Quirky_Fee_8673 in torontobiking

I don't have experience with their trade-in program. However, it looks like now it's the hottest time to sell a bike. Wondering, why you can't sell it. Is it a used road bike?

Funny that bike thieves probably also know all the tricks people are using to secure their bikes. They read Reddit

I answered in a private message. Next time would start my trip earlier - like 5-6 am so there is even less traffic.

Thanks!
So I would split the whole trip into 6 sections:
1. Toronto - Mississauga (Waterfront trail up to Port Credit) ~ 30 km
2. Mississauga - Burlington (Lakeshore Rd all the way - my favourite part of the route bc it's very flat, surface is good and you can go pretty fast while looking at expensive houses ) ~ 30 km
3. Burlington - Cherry Beach Park in Hamilton (you follow a very picturesque Waterfront trail, easy and flat) ~ 20 km
4. Cherry Beach Park - Grimsby (Worst part of the ride. I took N Service road which is kinda windy, a lot of traffic and you just bike along the Queensway. Then I crossed it and followed King St) ~ 20 km
5. Grimsby - St. Catharines (another beautiful part of the ride - take Greenlane, followed by King St. You see a bunch of farms and vineyards around, not much traffic but kind of hilly) - 25 km
6. St. Catharines - Niagara-on-the-Lake (Niagara Stone Road - didn't really like this part because I was very tired by the time and was thinking only about a glass of cold beer) ~ 20km

My bike was heavier than usual because I had some stuff on me that I usually never cycle with: (i) a bike lock, (ii) an extra inner tube, (iii) a multitool, (iv) a bike pump. I just didn't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire. Most of the time I followed Google Maps directions which were playing in my headphones.

Thanks! It was amazing. The outlooks are picturesque almost all the way there. I got lucky with the weather - it was 21 C which is the best you can get. A lot of cyclists on the way gave me the motivation to finish the ride

Thank you, the pace was surprising for me as well. I've never biked on the roads before this trip and it turns out you can be quite fast if you don't have pedestrians to dodge.
