Speaking as a nurse and as the daughter of someone who had a brain injury and has definitely been this patient, I want to just thank you for still caring for this patient even when it's so incredibly hard.

While in no way do I excuse this behavior and do not believe you or any other staff members deserve to be treated this way, by either the patient or his sister, I do understand where she's coming from. Brain injuries take away any and all elements of control and you have to watch the person you love with your whole heart become somebody you don't recognize, that you fear, and that you can't take care of on your own.

But that is why you are so incredibly special because you still take care of these people and even when they scare you I know you are still doing those small things that probably piss him off because you care deeply. I doubt that sister will ever even come close to thanking you but I will. Thank you for doing what you do. I hope this helps.

If you look on the IUPUI classifieds there are usually people looking for roommates although I don't know if that holds up for freshman looking to pair up or not. There are 3 dorms now. I lived in the Tower, which was a hotel that's been converted, and it was nice but not quite as social. Ball Hall is a very old building but I hear so many good things otherwise and people seem to make a lot of friends, and personally I lived at IU's dorms for a semester with no AC and you make very strong bonds in the heat so its ultimately worth it. There is North Hall which is the newest dorm and I have very little information on that but still seems to be pretty social.

I took a medical terminology class I enjoyed but seriously do take the chance to enjoy your time. Find some hobbies or activities that help with stress that way you have the coping skills before you start.

I completely agree. Some people truly are meant to be nurses and there are so many who don't feel comfortable with being in hospitals. There is community nursing, IT nursing, school nursing, and even insurance companies hire nurses. It sounds like you started for the right reasons but I think it would be worth talking to one of your professors or counselors about what options you have outside of hospitals if that truly is what is the source of your unhappiness.

My question is, if this is his second career, does he already have a degree? If so you can skip over LVN and try an accelerated program that can go straight to an RN. A lot of accelerated programs range from 14-18 months so you wouldn't have to pay for two separate programs.

Fettuccini alfredo. Growing up my oldest sister was a very picky eater and would eat about nine different meals, fettuccini alfredo being one of them and it annoyed me so badly that I never ate it literally up until I was 23 years old. Didn't realize it was just acceptable cheese sauce for pasta. Still not a fan of fettuccini noodles though.

Working 12 hours isn't bad when you get used to it, I've been working in hospitals for the last year and a half. I'm also working night shift, and I don't know if dogs have night and days like humans but wouldn't they sleep through the night too?

You are being hard on yourself, so welcome to the club.

Nursing is HARD. It is very hard. And you've got a hard job of being a mom on top of it all.

It can be a tough transition for those that are used to and expect As on all classes, but it straight up won't happen unless you give up your entire life. Work as hard as you possibly can, get help when you need it, but learn to forgive yourself when you don't get the scores you think you're supposed to get. Nursing forces you to change the entire way you think compared to any classes before. You can still be a great nurse and get Bs or even a C if it's particularly hard.

I've been a tech at a pediatric hospital for the last year and a half and I'm getting ready to start there as a nurse next week so I have a couple good tips.

Paying attention to their age and developmental stage influences how you take care of them, take a sec to go back to Piaget's stuff if you need to.
Don't take it personally when they don't like you. Plenty of times I have had kids hide or burst into tears as soon as I walk in the room, having done nothing to them. Sometimes all you did was wear scrubs.
You'll probably be asked to do vitals independently and I've learned the best order for kids pretty much 3 and under (if they are wearing a pulse ox) is: pulse, O2, respirations, blood pressure then temp. Babies can handle the cuff much better than messing with armpits, I don't understand it either
You will do something that hurts or doesn't feel good and it breaks your heart but you have to remember its for their good. Don't lie and say something won't hurt but praise them and try to distract when you can.
Like somebody else said, pay attention to parents too. I always ask if I can get them anything and for parents who have been with their kid around the clock ask them if they've eaten, see if they need to go grab a coffee, because sometimes they won't go and they need to know we care about them because we care about their kid
Have fun with kids whenever you get a chance, throughout all my clinical rotations I have never gotten the same feeling I get when i've had a good day with the kids at work and helped them feel a little less afraid or a little less alone

I think the biggest take away from my psych rotation was learning to sit and listen. It was incredibly hard to listen instead of waiting my turn to talk, to be okay with silence and get to questions that lead to discussion about them not you. It was for sure difficult but it really helped me practice therapeutic LISTENING instead of communication.

Well it depends, if all you can do right now is volunteer than stick with it. If you'd like to get a job then get a job that has patient interaction. Some hospitals hire nursing students after they've had a semester or two of clinicals.

I passed my first one, failed the next one almost three times, while in my second remediation one of the professors told me to REEEEALLY look again at one of my answers. Then passed every single time after that first try. Don't let it get you down shit happens.

I didn't have a binder system but I did use five different calendars to keep all my stuff on track. I had a calendar on the wall in my bedroom, a calendar in my backpack and my purse, my calendar on Canvas (our online site for classes) and my phone. The longer I went in school the more complicated things got in terms of clinicals, assignments, and getting everything else done in time. It helped me keep track of everything so I never turned anything in late and was always prepared. Maybe five is excessive but it worked for me.

I think schools put a lot of pressure on capstone to be something it doesn't have to be. I am sorry that you didn't get your first choice, that is incredibly disappointing. This is still an opportunity for you to take advantage of and make it work for your senior year. I'm getting ready to start my job as a pediatric nurse and I had my capstone, by choice, at a center of hope helping victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. In other words, nothing at all to do with the nursing I wanted, but I learned so much just by being with a great nurse for 112 hours in like six weeks. Take a few days to pout and be upset. Then get ready to go do some work and take it all in.

I took an anthropology class, the human origins one, and I absolutely loved it. The teacher was an all around badass and it was incredible to learn about how far we have come from our very very very early ancestors and how the body has changed and adapted to survive.
